Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This large, easy-to-use volume lists the works of more than eleven hundred different authors, covering thousands of stories of lost mines and buried treasures supposedly located in fifteen Western and Southwestern states and in Mexico. In addition to being a boon to those adventurers who are tempted to search for lost mines and buried treasures, it will be an important basic research tool for historians, geologists, geographers, anthropologists, archaeologists, and folklorists, and it will be useful in identifying the man treasure hoards and mining claims all the way from the Lost Adams Diggings in Arizona to the Stagecoach in Wyoming. The information given in this important bibliography was acquired through perusal of an unusually large number of books, newspapers, magazines, unpublished manuscripts, deposits in private and public libraries, holdings of various historical foundations, and governmental records and archives. The task took Mr. Probert three full years of steady, patient work. Many of these stories of lost mines and buried treasures have resulted in the discovery of some that are rarely acknowledged, largely because, as Mr. Probert points out, "those who have been so fortunate as to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow have deemed it wiser and much safer to keep their own counsel" -- Book jacket.

It has been described as a rich and varied land of history, myth and legend, danger, ghosts, rugged landscapes, aridity, remoteness, spectacular vistas, and wildlife that either bit, stung, or clawed. The Big Bend has been visited or settled by Indians, Spanish explorers, Mexicans, Anglo ranchers, outlaws of every stripe, and the United States military. Each of these cultures has left a legacy in this fascinating country, and much of has to do with the wealth associated with lost mines and buried treasures. The twenty-one tales included in this book are spellbinding accounts of some of the most exciting and mysterious lost treasures to be found in North America. They represent many millions of dollars worth of gold, silver, jewels, coin, and currency that are still searched for today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a professional treasure hunter, the era of the Civil War is attractive in a number of ways. For one thing, many of the lost or cached military payrolls are documented, so the fortune at the end of the search remains a real one as opposed to a folklorical or mythical one. The truth is, there are millions of dollars worth of such payrolls waiting to be discovered. Further, recovered artifacts associated with both the Union and Confederate armies can sometimes yield impressively high values among collectors. Recovered weapons caches find a viable market. Most tales of lost mines and buried treasures are steeped in history and/or lore. The added element of the fascinating era of the Civil War adds a particular level of interest and excitement to the quest. For the first time, an exhaustively researched collection of some of the most notable lost treasures of the Civil War is presented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 127 stories of Lost Mines and Treasurers, in New England, covering the States of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Many of the stories concern treasurers buried by the French, British, Indians and Colonial settlers during the many wars that rocked the area in the 18th and 19th centuries. I have also included a few stories from early newspapers on the Treasure of Oak Island, which discuss the early history of the site. It seems that interest has been revived in the area by a Television Show, which has run for five seasons, seeking the treasure believed to be there. At the end of 2017 they actually found a piece of 16th century jewelry containing a faceted Rhodonite Garnet and a lead cross, and a few pieces of hardware. I found the data for this book while doing research on old mines for my series of books Mines of the American West. The "Lost Mines and Treasurers" were identified from articles in early American newspapers and other sources considered reliable. Where possible, for those lost treasures still to be found, I have tried to tie them to modern mines or areas and include some background data on such areas. In doing this, some of them seemed to "fall short" in the area of fact and logic. The reader should understand that this is a collection of data from old and new publications and not a focused specifically on the effort to find the specific properties, although some research, especially from a logic standpoint, has been done. If the reader can glean critical information from these original articles and the limited research that allows or helps him or her to locate a "lost mine" or "lost treasure", I wish him or her well and leave it to them to reap the rewards. The print version of this book has been produced in the 81⁄2" X 11" format to keep the price low. If done in 6" X 9" or smaller, the book would be 2 or 3 times as many pages in length and would cost substantially more to increased "on demand" print costs. These seem to be heavily influenced by the total number of pages. While this may be one of the seeming drawbacks to "on-demand printing", the benefit of "on-demand printing" is that specialty books, such as this, are now practical to publish where the target market may be relatively small and minimal returns to the author are acceptable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legends like these have long circulated in the American Southwest, and now for the first time they are collected in a single volume. Jameson gathered his material from his own extensive, on-site research in Arizona, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, and from interviews with people whose lives have been entwined with the search for particular treasures. Though the lore sounds fabulous, it has all grown out of the actual histories of Indians, outlaws, conquistadors, priests, and ranchers - characters well documented in the drama of the unfolding West. American Regional Folklore begins with a chapter on library research, including how to locate a library suitable for folklore research, how to understand a library's resources, and how to construct a research strategy. Mood also gives excellent advice on researching beyond the library: locating and using community resources like historical societies, museums, fairs and festivals, storytelling groups, local colleges, newspapers and magazines, and individuals with knowledge of the field. The rest of the book is divided into eight sections, each one highlighting a separate region (the Northeast, the South and Southern Highlands, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West, the Northwest, Alaska, and Hawaii). Each regional section contains a useful overview essay, written by an expert on the folklore of that particular region, followed by a selective, annotated bibliography of books and a directory of related resources.

Book excerpt: Written in 1930, Coronado's Children was one of J. Frank Dobie's first books, and the one that helped gain him national prominence as a folklorist. In it, he recounts the tales and legends of those hardy souls who searched for buried treasure in the Southwest following in the footsteps of that earlier gold seeker, the Spaniard Coronado. "These people," Dobie writes in his introduction, "no matter what language they speak, are truly Coronado's inheritors.... l have called them Coronado's children. They follow Spanish trails, buffalo trails, cow trails, they dig where there are no trails; but oftener than they dig or prospect they just sit and tell stories of lost mines, of buried bullion by the jack load... " This is the tale-spinning Dobie at his best, dealing with subjects as irresistible as ghost stories and haunted houses.
