Download or read book Western Europe and the New International Economic Order written by Ervin Laszlo and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Europe and the New International Economic Order examines the views and positions of Western European nations regarding the New International Economic Order (NIEO). The factors influencing such positions are analyzed, namely, economic factors on the one hand, and social, political, and cultural factors on the other. This volume is comprised of seven chapters and begins with a brief sketch of Western Europe, followed by a discussion on Western Europe's reaction to four NIEO issues: the adjustment policies necessary to establish the NIEO; the Law of the Sea; the integrated approach to commodities; and official development assistance (ODA) transfers. The following chapters focus on the implications of the NIEO for Western European economy, social services, income redistribution, and social movements; the policies of Scandinavia and the so-called ""like-minded"" countries toward developing countries and the NIEO; and institutional and political factors for and against the NIEO in Western Europe. The final chapter outlines the role of Western Europe in solving the problems of the NIEO. This book will be a useful resource for economists and economic policymakers.
Book Synopsis Economic Crisis and Structural Reforms in Southern Europe by : Paolo Manasse
Download or read book Economic Crisis and Structural Reforms in Southern Europe written by Paolo Manasse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the countries of southern Europe have undergone, with varying intensity, a serious and prolonged economic crisis. Most have had to implement comprehensive economic adjustment programmes, including a wide range of structural reforms. Economic Crisis and Structural Reforms in Southern Europe examines these reforms, drawing policy lessons from their successes and failures. This book employs two basic strands of analysis: issues of policy design, and political economy considerations. It considers the choice of timing and sequencing of reforms, the choice of the appropriate policy instruments, the pressure of interest groups and the political calculations involved in reforms. Featuring chapters in which contributors explore both national cases of specific structural reforms, and a comparative approach in order to evaluate similar reforms across countries, this important and topical work explores ongoing issues within the economy. Focusing on the challenges of designing and implementing structural reforms under conditions of crisis, this book will be of interest to policy makers and researchers from national and international organizations as well as academics and members of research institutes interested in the economics and politics of the Eurozone crisis.

Book Synopsis Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union by : Franklyn D. Holzman
Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Reform in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union written by Franklyn D. Holzman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic reform, structural adjustment, macroeconomic stabilization, and participation in the world economy are interconnected aspects of the same issue: the long-term economic viability of centrally planned economies in the rapidly changing economic environment of the modern world. Any economic strategy that focuses on only one or two of these aspects at the expense of the others is likely to fail; yet even strategies that build on all of these bases may well fail unless political leaders can muster exceptional skill, garner international support, and enjoy some good luck. The contributions to this volume reflect the recent research on this issue by various specialists on the economies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Each author emphasizes macroeconomic stabilization, structural adjustment, participation in the larger world economy, or ecomonic reform.
Book Synopsis Economic Growth in the West by : Angus Maddison
Download or read book Economic Growth in the West written by Angus Maddison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed a "an outstanding contribution to our knowledge of the way in which western economies work" [Times Literary Supplement], this penetrating study of economic growth compares and analyzes tic rates of economic advance in the twelve leading countries that comprise the industrial West. Mr. Maddison examines why, after relative stagnation for several decades, the rate of economic development accelerated in continental Europe in the 1950’s, whether this represented a new economic pattern which could be maintained or was only a passing phase of recovery after World War II. He observes that the economies of North America and the United Kingdom seemed by comparison almost to stand still, and he explores the influence of economic policy on the differing growth rates, and the growth potentials and desirable lines of policy in the industrial West. He then discusses the major powers’ policy problems, whose outcome so closely affects the developing nations. Mr. Maddison presents basic statistical series, going back to 1870 in most cases, on gross national products, productivity, population, labor force, employment, working hours, investment and capital-output ratios. He draws upon this rich fund of comparative statistics with skill and insight, relating it throughout to the broad questions of economic policy which are at issue. This classic book was first published in 1964.

Book Synopsis Challenges for Europe in the World, 2030 by : John Eatwell
Download or read book Challenges for Europe in the World, 2030 written by John Eatwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges for Europe in the World, 2030 embodies critical thinking about the long-term implications for Europe of the clear shift of power from the West to the East and the South. Designed as a multi-faceted project, this book presents an integrated assessment covering a wide range of policy areas and alternative assumptions about trends in global and European governance. In order to reach this ambitious objective in a comprehensive and consistent way, several types of quantitative and qualitative approaches have been combined: a model of macro regions of the world economy, an institutional perspective, and lessons from foresight studies. With a strong focus on policy implications, the book is introduced by an executive summary which outlines the project assumptions, especially on the future of Europe in the context of the current economic crisis and of the emergence of a new balance of powers in the global economy. Subsequent chapters cover the regulation of finance, trade and technology developments, environmental sustainability, employment conditions and population wellbeing. The book concludes with an assessment of the extent to which these developments are likely to lead to significant political changes in Europe. In sum this book challenges public policy makers to re-assess their thinking in shaping Europe’s future.

Book Synopsis Regional Economic Issues--Special Report 25 Years of Transition by : Mr.James Roaf
Download or read book Regional Economic Issues--Special Report 25 Years of Transition written by Mr.James Roaf and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 25 years have seen a dramatic transformation in Europe’s former communist countries, resulting in their reintegration with the global economy, and, in most cases, major improvements in living standards. But the task of building full market economies has been difficult and protracted. Liberalization of trade and prices came quickly, but institutional reforms—such as governance reform, competition policy, privatization and enterprise restructuring—often faced opposition from vested interests. The results of the first years of transition were uneven. All countries suffered high inflation and major recessions as prices were freed and old economic linkages broke down. But the scale of output losses and the time taken for growth to return and inflation to be brought under control varied widely. Initial conditions and external factors played a role, but policies were critical too. Countries that undertook more front-loaded and bold reforms were rewarded with faster recovery and income convergence. Others were more vulnerable to the crises that swept the region in the wake of the 1997 Asia crisis.

Book Synopsis European Economic Integration as a Challenge to Industry and Government by : Richard Tilly
Download or read book European Economic Integration as a Challenge to Industry and Government written by Richard Tilly and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU Single Market and the opening up of Eastern Europe offer a chance to create a truly pan-European market economy. In this respect, many lessons can be learned from early 20th-century developments in Europe. Bearing this in mind, the authors analyze the fragility of international trade, financial investment and foreign relations in and across Europe, from both a contemporary and historical perspective. In a period of increased migration and higher capital mobility, the major OECD countries are faced with such issues as monetary integration, the role of banks and the requirement for structural adjustment. Even more complex is the integration of Russia. Policymakers and the business community alike are presented simultaneously with unique opportunities and unique challenges - with old and new pitfalls looming.
