Book excerpt: When Archie Stanley became interested in the National Geographic Genome Mapping Project, his imagination and memory were both inspired. After seeing the prehistoric and historical routes and migrations of his ancestors, he fully realized how important it is to know who you are, and where you come from. Journeys is his reference book for his grandsons, tracing their genealogy, heritage, and history. From the primordial swamp to the heraldic fields of England, from hunters and gatherers to Colonial settlers, from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam, Journeys weaves the distant past with the known past, and even gives predictions about the future of mankind. A seamless blend of science fiction, informed speculation, family archives and source material, DNA testing, and memory, Journeys is a testament to the bonds of family.

Download or read book Pioneer Families of the Midwest written by Blanche Lea Walden and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important, albeit scarce, three-volume collection of family histories pertaining to persons who migrated to the Midwest during the last quarter of the eighteenth or first quarter of the nineteenth century is now available in a consolidated edition. Mrs. Walden, who privately published these genealogies between 1939 and 1941, has here bridged the earliest known records pertaining to each family so that future researchers might be able to trace their lines with less difficulty. In all, the reader will find about 150 allied families and some 7,500 Midwestern pioneers treated within these pages. Listed below are the main families covered by Mrs. Walden together with the states in which they settled: Harper of OH, PA, MO, and MI; Rainey of OH, IN, IL, MI, MO, KS; Boal of OH, IA, MI, MN, IN, IL, and WI; Hope of VA, OH, MO, WI, OR, WV, and IN; Dewees of DE, PA, OH, IN, IL, and IA; Francis of OH, NY, IA, and OK; Smith of NJ, OH, IN, IL, IA, and CA; Dorr of CT, OH, IN, IL, KS, NE, and CA; Coe of CT, OH, IN, and IA; Fuller of CT, OH, IN, and MO; Allen of CT, OH, KS, and IL; Pratt of CT and OH; Davis of NH, ME, OH, IN, and IA; True of NH, OH, IA, and MO; Argo of DE, OH, IL, and IA; and Plumly of PA, OH, and IA.

Download or read book Athens County written by Ron Luce and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athens County, Ohio, came out of the pioneer spirit of a new nation expanding westward after the Revolutionary War into the Northwest Territory. Upon declaration of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the Ohio Company of Associates bought millions of acres of land to sell to land-hungry easterners. In 1788, the first boat of new settlers arrived in Marietta, Ohio. By 1797, wars with the Native Americans had ended and more land became available. When they got here, settlers found some rich farmland, but more importantly they discovered salt, coal, clay and a need for industry to provide for the needs of the people. Opportunities abounded to make fortunes in other places from the resources readily available locally. Central to the development of Athens County was the vision people had years before the first settlers arrived; they dreamed of and made provisions for a university in the new territory. Today, more than 200 years later, Ohio University thrives in the city of Athens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring blend of nature writing and memoir that explores nature’s crucial role in our emotional and mental health Bats can hear shapes, plants can eat light, and bees can dance maps. When his life took him to a painfully dark place, the poet behind The CryptoNaturalist, Jarod K. Anderson, found comfort and redemption in these facts and the shift in perspective that comes from paying a new kind of attention to nature. Something in the Woods Loves You tells the story of the darkest stretch of a young person’s life, and how deliberate and meditative encounters with plants and animals helped him see the light at every turn. Ranging from optimistic contemplations of mortality to appreciations of a single mushroom, Anderson has written a lyrical love letter to the natural world and given us the tools to see it all anew.
