Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Sacramento, in Yolo County, is just across the river from the state capital that shares part of its name. But it has a very distinct history. First called Washington, the area became an agricultural and industrial center that attracted Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian immigrants and helped to feed and supply the growing metropolis of Sacramento and surrounding counties. In 1911, the ambitious West Sacramento Land Company laid down electric rail links to downtown Sacramento and cleared the land for what they hoped would be large-scale developments and population growth. Eventually West Sacramento did grow, and in 1987 the communities of West Sacramento, Broderick, Bryte, and Southport joined together to become one of the newest incorporated cities in the state.

Book Synopsis Sacramento's Streetcars by : William Burg
Download or read book Sacramento's Streetcars written by William Burg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-07-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1947, Sacramento’s streetcars linked a bustling downtown district with residential neighborhoods, workplaces, and a growing series of suburbs. Starting with horse-drawn cars on Front Street, the streetcar system owned by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company expanded to include Midtown, Curtis Park, Land Park, Oak Park, and East Sacramento. But PG&E was not alone; two other companies ran streetcar routes downtown, along with suburban lines to West Sacramento, North Sacramento, Rio Linda, Elverta, Colonial Heights, and Colonial Acres. Sacramentans rode the cars to work, to school, to the state fair, and just about anywhere they wanted to go until the streetcars were replaced by buses owned by National City Lines.
Book Synopsis Sacramento Beer by : Justin Chechourka
Download or read book Sacramento Beer written by Justin Chechourka and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically speaking, Sacramento benefited from a gold rush, an agricultural boom and, more recently, a brewing renaissance. The region's craft beer scene exploded from six to more than sixty breweries in about a decade, and the roots of that culture stretch back more than a century. Before Prohibition, thousands of acres of local hops supplied brewers across the country. Local farms are once again taking advantage of the temperate climate. In 1958, the University of California-Davis started America's foremost brewing science program, producing some of California's top brewers. Rubicon's 1989 award-winning IPA was just the beginning for the current, innovative resurgence. Author Justin Chechourka explores the complexities and nuance of this fermenting heritage.

Book excerpt: Located about 100 miles inland from the coast, Sacramento isnA[a¬a[t always considered a port town. Yet beginning in the mid-1850s, barges, riverboats, and steamers began plying the river between here and San Francisco, carrying passengers, supplies, livestock, and produce between the coast and valley regions. The deepwater era began in 1911, when plans began on a canal and lock system that could accommodate large ships. In 1947, the SacramentoA[a¬aYolo Port District was created, ushering in many decades of worldwide shipping and commerce that was critical to the growth of California. Along the way, the facility hosted virtually every manner of oceangoing vessel and cargoes and equipment of every description.

This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposition 13 reduced the ability of local gov't's. to finance public goods and infrastructure through local taxes. Local gov't's. responded by increasing their reliance on fees and exactions. The constitutional takings clause may represent yet another limitation on the ability of local gov't's. to finance public improvements. In addition, CA's burgeoning population and scenic and natural resources make it fertile ground for the conflicts associated with growth: how should transportation infrastructure and other public services be financed as communities spread outward? How should open space, habitat, and access to recreational resources be preserved and paid for? Tables.

Book Synopsis Russian Refuge by : Susan Wiley Hardwick
Download or read book Russian Refuge written by Susan Wiley Hardwick and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1993-12-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, when victims of religious persecution were finally allowed to leave Russia, a flood of immigrants landed on the Pacific shores of North America. By the end of 1992 over 200,000 Jews and Christians had left their homeland to resettle in a land where they had only recently been considered "the enemy." Russian Refuge is a comprehensive account of the Russian immigrant experience in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia since the first settlements over two hundred years ago. Susan Hardwick focuses on six little-studied Christian groups—Baptists, Pentecostals, Molokans, Doukhobors, Old Believers, and Orthodox believers—to study the role of religion in their decisions to emigrate and in their adjustment to American culture. Hardwick deftly combines ethnography and cultural geography, presenting narratives and other data collected in over 260 personal interviews with recent immigrants and their family members still in Russia. The result is an illuminating blend of geographic analysis with vivid portrayals of the individual experience of persecution, migration, and adjustment. Russian Refuge will interest cultural geographers, historians, demographers, immigration specialists, and anyone concerned with this virtually untold chapter in the story of North American ethnic diversity.
