Book excerpt: West Point, located at the juncture of three rivers, is a tapestry of the American experience. The peninsula was a stronghold and religious center for the Powhatan tribes of eastern Virginia and the site of many significant events at the beginning of English settlement in America. Its story includes Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, and Capt. John Smith. In 1655, the West family became the first British to settle the peninsula, and Bacon's Rebellion was brought to an end there in 1676. Martha Washington was born and raised near the town that was also home to Carter Braxton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. West Point was a site of Lafayette's artillery during the Battle of Yorktown. With the coming of the railroad, it became a valuable port fought over during the Civil War and later a steamship hub and riverside resort. The 20th century saw influences of immigration, two world wars, and the struggle for civil rights. Native son Gen. "Chesty" Puller became an iconic hero of the Marine Corps. This rich legacy is explored through images with an emphasis on the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century.

Written by prominent archaeologists with research experience in their respective topic areas, the chapters consider important issues of Virginia history and consider how the discipline of historic archaeology has addressed them and needs to address them . Changes in research strategy over time are discussed , and recommendations are made concerning the need to recognize the diverse and often differing roles and impacts that characterized the different regions of Virginia over the course of its historic past. Significant issues in Virginia history needing greater study are identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Civil War biography chronicles the life of the brave Union artillery officer who refused to retreat from Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. Lieutenant Alonzo Hereford Cushing may be the most famous lieutenant to be killed during the Civil War. Two years out of West Point, the young artillery officer commanded Battery A of the 4th US Artillery at Gettysburg. Despite severe wounds, Cushing defended his position at Cemetery Ridge against the fearsome Confederate infantry assault. The story of Cushing’s heroic final moments were witnessed and recorded by a battlefield correspondent for The New York Times, who said “the gallantry of this officer is beyond praise.” In 2014, President Barak Obama awarded Cushing a posthumous Medal of Honor. In this biography, Kent Brown presents a lively narrative based on extensive research, including a cache of Cushing’s letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When General E. A. Paine assumed command of the U.S. Army's District of Western Kentucky at Paducah in the summer of 1864, he faced a defiant populace, a thriving black market and undisciplined troops plagued by low morale. Guerrillas pillaged towns and murdered the vocal few that supported the Union. Paine's task was to enforce discipline and mollify the secessionist majority in a 2,300-square-mile district. In less than two months, he succeeded where others had failed. For secessionists, his tenure was a "reign of terror"--for the Unionist minority, a "happy and jubilant" time. An abolitionist, Paine encouraged the enlistment of black troops and fair wages for former slaves. Yet his principled views led to his downfall. Critics and enemies falsified reports, leading to his removal from command and a court-martial. He was exonerated on all but one minor charge yet historians have perpetuated the Paine-the-monster myth. This book tells the complete story.

Recognizing the north's superiority in industry and technology, they turned their own schools from a classical orientation to a new emphasis on science and engineering. These educators came to define the Southern idea of progress and passed it on to their students, thus helping to create and perpetuate an expectation for the arrival of the New South."--BOOK JACKET.
