Book excerpt: The old man had seen the big wolf for the fi rst time early in the spring. He was riding bareback along the creek checking his cows and looked up suddenly to see the wolf standing on the bluff south of the house. It was a mile or more away but even at the distance it looked big as a horse. Later when he came to know it better and to recognize its distinctive track no matter what ground condition he found it in the old man estimated its weight at a hundred and fifty pounds or maybe a hundred and seventy-five if its belly was full but belly full or empty, it walked over the face of his land which it lay joint claim to with authority and without fear as nothing else had walked it since the old man was a boy and the great shaggies had grazed the flats along the Palo Duro by the thousands and drank there from the deep pools. But even in that fabled time it would have walked alone a path all others had given over with news of its coming a wolf in the body of a horse. Big as a damned horse! Its paw prints along the edges of the fi elds and in the soft mud along the ditch were that big and that deep! As the days passed it walked the valley on its great feet not in evening's shadow or at false dawn as others of its kind were wont to do and had done for ten thousand years but in gaudy day over the broad land fully lighted and it did not move on seeking more remote territory as the old man had expected it to do. Somehow it seemed to be more than just a wolf and not in its enormous size alone but also in some other way which the old man could not identify and it became in his mind even as it was in reality a superwolf.

Book Synopsis Religion in Cormac McCarthy's Fiction by : Manuel Broncano
Download or read book Religion in Cormac McCarthy's Fiction written by Manuel Broncano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the religious scope of Cormac McCarthy’s fiction, one of the most controversial issues in studies of his work. Current criticism is divided between those who find a theological dimension in his works, and those who reject such an approach on the grounds that the nihilist discourse characteristic of his narrative is incompatible with any religious message. McCarthy’s tendencies toward religious themes have become increasingly more acute, revealing that McCarthy has adopted the biblical language and rhetoric to compose an "apocryphal" narrative of the American Southwest while exploring the human innate tendency to evil in the line of Herman Melville and William Faulkner, both literary progenitors of the writer. Broncano argues that this apocryphal narrative is written against the background of the Bible, a peculiar Pentateuch in which Blood Meridian functions as the Book of Genesis, the Border Trilogy functions as the Gospels, and No Country for Old Men as the Book of Revelation, while The Road is the post-apocalyptic sequel. This book analyzes the novels included in what Broncano defines as the South-Western cycle (from Blood Meridian to The Road) in search of the religious foundations that support the narrative architecture of the texts.

Book Synopsis Werewolves, Wolves and the Gothic by :
Download or read book Werewolves, Wolves and the Gothic written by and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolves lope across Gothic imagination. Signs of a pure animality opposed to humanity, in the figure of the werewolf they become liminal creatures that move between the human and the animal. Werewolves function as a site for exploring complex anxieties of difference – of gender, class, race, space, nation or sexuality – but the imaginative and ideological uses of wolves also reflect back on the lives of material animals, long persecuted in their declining habitats across the world. Werewolves therefore raise unsettling questions about the intersection of the real and the imaginary, the instability of human identities and the worldliness and political weight of the Gothic. This is the first volume concerned with the appearance of werewolves and wolves in literary and cultural texts from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. Drawing on representations of werewolves and wolves in literature, film, television and visual culture, the essays investigate the key texts of the lycanthropic canon alongside lesser-known works from the 1890s to the present. The result is an innovative study that is both theoretically aware and historically nuanced, featuring an international list of established and emerging scholars based in Britain, Europe, North America and Australia.
