Book excerpt: DIVMaster detective Niccolo Benedetti hunts down a killer in the French Alps/divDIV Niccolo Benedetti is many things: a professor, philosopher, painter, charmer, and a sterling, world-class detective, too. For Benedetti, a murder is not just a crime, but also a means of dissecting the nature of evil. It’s a problem demanding as much art as it does science./divDIV /divDIVIn this second installment in the Benedetti series, the detective travels to a ski resort in the French Alps, where a conference of international scientists is rocked by a series of killings. To make matters worse the prefect of police is also targeted, endangering the whole future of the conference, and the scientists claim that the perpetrator is nothing less than an honest-to-God, full moon–intoxicated werewolf. Together with sidekicks Ron Gentry and Janet Higgins, Benedetti will have to dive headfirst into this supposedly supernatural case. /div

Book excerpt: This collection of crime and detection stories sets out various complex crimes and the ingenuity of Detective Inspector Samsher Brahma and his team, in solving them. There are murders of rage, vengeance, and greed. A killer creates a fictitious persona, poisons are used innovatively, and exceptional alibis are crafted through TVs and voice mimics. Successions of enormous wealth spawn unique crime motives, and mobile phones make a one-of-a-kind background for butchery. Meandering confessions, detections through “timings of crimes,” a schizophrenic man’s murder, a mythical werewolf’s killings, and uncovering an assassin in subtle supernatural circumstances, round up these amazing stories. Every story has its own inimitable experience of use of intellectual efforts and meticulous investigation.

Book excerpt: Ever since Ceyla Ward, seer and supernatural detective, disappeared in a flash of green light five years ago, chaos has fallen on the magical world of Helios. Some blame her for the disasters that befell the land after she left. Others dismiss Ward’s effect on the events that followed as mere chance. Many were just relieved that she was gone—dead, they hope. And then there are those who simply want her home. Five years after the rising of Demons and the beginnings of the Helios Civil War, her betrothed Avery Holt, her brother Eran Nordskov, and her adopted father Michael Ward continue to try to reach her through letters, messages, and emails about how Helios was faring in her absence—even as they hold on to the hope that she comes home soon. Because there are just some unsolved murders that cannot be laid to rest too easily.

Book excerpt: Sexual Murder: Catathymic and Compulsive Homicides is the culmination of the author’s 45 years of experience with, and studying, sexually motivated homicide. Sexual murders are generally of two types — catathymic and compulsive. Catathymic homicides are caused by a breakthrough of underlying sexual conflicts. They can be unplanned, explosive (acute) attacks or planned murders stemming from a chronic obsession with, or disturbed attachment to, the victim. In compulsive homicides, a fusion of sex and aggression results in a powerful internal drive which pushes the offender to seek out victims to kill — and the killing itself is sexually gratifying. These murders also may be planned or unplanned. In compulsive homicides that are unplanned, the urge breaks through and disrupts the offender’s controls when a victim of opportunity crosses his path. The compulsive offender who plans his crimes often eludes law enforcement, and as a result he can have multiple (serial) victims over extended periods of time. Both forms of sexual murder — the catathymic and the compulsive — are presented in this volume from a clinical-descriptive perspective encompassing case studies with analysis. Recent advances in empirical research in sexual murder—including findings from the joint research project between John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico—has published many important studies. These include such topics as necrophilia, foreign object insertions in sexual homicide, ritual and signature and temporal patterns in serial sexual homicide, mass murder, crime scene staging in homicide, and undoing (symbolic reversal) at homicide scenes. All such research will be included and incorporate into this fully updated Second Edition, including approximately fifty new clinical case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering figures ranging from Catherine Monvoisin to Vlad the Impaler, and describing murders committed in ancient aristocracies to those attributed to vampires, witches, and werewolves, this book documents the historic reality of serial murder. The majority of serial murder studies support the consensus that serial murder is essentially an American crime—a flawed assumption, as the United States has existed for less than 250 years. What is far more likely is that the perverse urge to repeatedly and intentionally kill has existed throughout human history, and that a substantial percentage of serial murders throughout ancient times, the middle ages, and the pre-modern era were attributed to imaginative surrogate explanations: dragons, demons, vampires, werewolves, and witches. Legends, Monsters, or Serial Murderers? The Real Story Behind an Ancient Crime dispels the interrelated misconceptions that serial murder is an American crime and a relatively recent phenomenon, making the novel argument that serial murder is a historic reality—an unrecognized fact in ancient times. Noted serial murderers such as the Roman Locuta (The Poisoner); Gilles De Rais of France, a prolific serial killer of children; Andres Bichel of Bavaria; and Chinese aristocratic serial killer T'zu-Hsi are spotlighted. This book provides a unique perspective that integrates supernatural interpretations of serial killing with the history of true crime, reanimating mythic entities of horror stories and presenting them as real criminals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen short stories and novelettes compose Whispers and Screams. While these stories are from the realms of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, they are also stories about people, about loneliness, insanity, love, politics, philosophy, food, power, about human feelings and behavior in these dynamic times. A large number of the protagonists are minorities or women. Many of the stories owe their heritage to the black-and-white horror movies of the late thirties and forties and the B-grade science fiction of the fifties. "Proteus Rex" is about a genetically engineered life-form that adapts the attributes of animals (a lion's strength, a bird's wings) or whatever his survival needs and infinite appetites dictate. Having consumed all the animal life in a small rural community, he begins to eat people. Much of the story is about the local authority's attempt to identify and apprehend this menace, a significant challenge as Proteus Rex is an extradimensional being that can change his size to as small as an amoeba to as large as a blue whale. "Proteus Rex" is populated by a deep cast of characters, only a few of whom manage not to get eaten. Imagine the actress Lucy Liu portraying Ian Fleming's most shrewd creation, James Bond, 007. Only she's working for TSA—the Teleportation Security Administration—three hundred years in the future. This is after World War VI, and the United States has been fractured into several independent nations. The two Koreas have united and is running the world. Executive Action Officer Sun Park's mission is to capture or neutralize the perpetrators that sent and detonated an atomic bomb in the TSA X-port Freight Hub in Buenos Aires. This is the premise of "The Price of a Dog," an action-driven novella, a political science fiction thriller. In the short story "Slaves of the Cat Goddess," Buster, the main character (and stooge of General Wanamaker), is charged to take the mysterious cat Bast to a secret research base. Bast's size and ferocity force a crash landing on an uncharted tropical island inhabited by cannibals. Knowing that it was Buster who was responsible for her mutation, Bast not only protects him in this hostile world, but she sees that he is elevated, serving as the ambassador between the goddess Bast and the humanity she would enslave.
