Free public goods, a bit of worker control, and whopping trade surpluses? Social democracy doesn't sound too bad. Were You Born on the Wrong Continent? reveals where you might have been happier—or at least had time off to be unhappy properly. It explains why Americans should pay attention to Germany, where ordinary people can work three hundred to four hundred hours a year less than we do and still have one of the most competitive economies in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Basic of the Supreme Enlightenment: Book One is the first of four books in an intended series about the concept of supreme enlightenment. It's been said that only a superior monk who trains day and night for 30 years in a remote jungle may be worthy of receiving the power of pure divinity. Indeed, the idea of "The Supreme Enlightenment" seems to be a concept that few on Earth can grasp. This book serves as an introduction to supreme enlightenment. It also explains how to "control time," solve problems, and prolong life. It is the first in a series of books dedicated to finding a reasonable means to balancing the idea of enlightenment with science. Perhaps it is just possible that the highest forms of inspiration and enlightenment are right before our eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nadia Ellis attends to African diasporic belonging as it comes into being through black expressive culture. Living in the diaspora, Ellis asserts, means existing between claims to land and imaginative flights unmoored from the earth—that is, to live within the territories of the soul. Drawing on the work of Jose Muñoz, Ellis connects queerness' utopian potential with diasporic aesthetics. Occupying the territory of the soul, being neither here nor there, creates in diasporic subjects feelings of loss, desire, and a sensation of a pull from elsewhere. Ellis locates these phenomena in the works of C.L.R. James, the testy encounter between George Lamming and James Baldwin at the 1956 Congress of Negro Artists and Writers in Paris, the elusiveness of the queer diasporic subject in Andrew Salkey's novel Escape to an Autumn Pavement, and the trope of spirit possession in Nathaniel Mackey's writing and Burning Spear's reggae. Ellis' use of queer and affect theory shows how geographies claim diasporic subjects in ways that nationalist or masculinist tropes can never fully capture. Diaspora, Ellis concludes, is best understood as a mode of feeling and belonging, one fundamentally shaped by the experience of loss.

Book excerpt: Philip has a rare opportunity: to read the century-old chronicle of a vampire. It’s hard to resist such a prospect, but will he regret his decision once it’s made? The account was written by a vampire named James. Where many vampires tumble into the darkness of insanity and eventually suicide over the prospect of a lonesome eternity, James always had a purpose. His purpose was not to destroy but, instead, to protect. When James was turned at the age of eighteen, he made a promise to himself. He would spend his immortal life protecting the woman he loved in his youth, and her lineage for as long as fate allowed. For hundreds of years, his path was simple, set, and never shaken. Then, the unthinkable happened: a member of his beloved’s family fell ill—a young woman with such a potential for life. Will James let her die, and perhaps kill the memory of his lost love with her? Or will he consider doing what he promised never to do: become the Sire to a fledgling vampire? James must consider: will immortality be a blessing for the dying girl, or will it end up a curse, as it has always been for him? Philip will read the chronicle to find out, but does the story end with the last page or live on eternally in the blood of an immortal?

This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the relationship among young people, politics and the media. It presents a novel multidimensional analytical framework – The Circle Line Media Model, which accounts for the importance of a range of processes, actors and social structures in the political socialisation process. By defining political socialisation as a lifelong interactive process that develops civic cultures, collective identities and citizenship, underpinned by social structures, nationality and generational order, the author draws attention to its manifestation in acts of political participation and interactions with authoritative actors such as school/teachers, family, the media and friends/peers. The volume’s longitudinal study on young people, Europe and the media spanning 13 years of research in two very different countries also makes recommendations for more effectively engaging young people with politics and political media based on Generation Z’s own views about current deficiencies in their relationship with news media. Shedding new light on the changing nature of young people’s engagement with politics, this book will be of interest to researchers, lecturers/professors and upper level undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of media studies, communication and journalism studies as well as politics and sociology.
