Book Synopsis International Handbook of Violence Research by : Wilhelm Heitmeyer
Download or read book International Handbook of Violence Research written by Wilhelm Heitmeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international manual is like a world cruise: a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All the more reason to consider carefully whether it is necessary. This can hardly be the case if previous research in the selected field has already been the subject of an earlier review-or even several competing surveys. On the other hand, more thorough study is necessary if the intensity and scope of research are increasing without comprehensive assessments. That was the situation in Western societies when work began on this project in the summer of 1998. It was then, too, that the challenges emerged: any manual, espe cially an international one, is a very special type of text, which is anything but routine. It calls for a special effort: the "state of the art" has to be documented for selected subject areas, and its presentation made as compelling as possible. The editors were delighted, therefore, by the cooperation and commitment shown by the eighty-one contributors from ten countries who were recruited to write on the sixty-two different topics, by the con structive way in which any requests for changes were dealt with, and by the patient re sponse to our many queries. This volume is the result of a long process. It began with the first drafts outlining the structure of the work, which were submitted to various distinguished colleagues. Friedheim Neidhardt of Berlin, Gertrud Nunner-Winkler of Munich, and Roland Eckert of Trier, to name only a few, supplied valuable comments at this stage.

Book Synopsis The German Language in a Changing Europe by : Michael G. Clyne
Download or read book The German Language in a Changing Europe written by Michael G. Clyne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent sociopolitical events have profoundly changed the status and functions of German and influenced its usage. In this study (published by Cambridge in 1984) Michael Clyne revises and expands his original analysis of the German language in Language and Society in the German-speaking Countries in the light of such changes as the end of the Cold War, German unification, the redrawing of the map of Europe, increasing European integration, and the changing self-images of Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. His discussion includes the differences in the form, function and status of the various national varieties of German; the relation between standard and non-standard varieties; gender, generational and political variation; Anglo-American influence on German; and the convergence of east and west. The result is a wide-ranging exploration of language and society in the German-speaking countries, all of which have problems or dilemmas concerning nationhood or ethnicity which are language-related and/or language-marked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Download or read book TransArea written by Ottmar Ette and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ottmar Ette’s TransArea proceeds from the thesis that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, but rather, a process of long duration that may be divided into four main phases of accelerated globalization. These phases connect our present, across the world’s widely divergent modern eras, to the period of early modern history. Ette demonstrates how the literatures of the world make possible a tangible perception of that which constitutes Life, both of our planet and on our planet, which may only be understood through the application of multiple logics. There is no substitute for the knowledge of literature: it is the knowledge of life, from life. This English translation will be of great interest to English-speaking scholars in the fields of Global and Area Studies, Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Political Science, and many more. About the author Ottmar Ette has been Chair of Romance Literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, since 1995. He is Honorary Member of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) (elected in 2014), member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (elected in 2013), and regular member of the Academia Europaea (since 2010).

Book Synopsis The Story of a Life by : Aharon Appelfeld
Download or read book The Story of a Life written by Aharon Appelfeld and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2006-08-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Aharon Appelfeld was seven years old the Nazis occupied Czernowitz, his hometown. They penned the Jews into a ghetto and eventually sent whoever had not been shot or starved to death on a forced march across the Ukraine to a labor camp. As men, women, and children fall away around them, Aharon and his father miraculously survive, and Aharon, even more miraculously, escapes from the camp shortly after he arrives there. The next few years of Aharon’s life are both harrowing and heartrending: he hides, alone, in the Ukrainian forests from peasants who are only too happy to turn Jewish children over to the Nazis; he has the presence of mind to pass himself off as an orphaned gentile when he emerges from the forest to seek work; and, at war’s end, he joins the stream of refugees as they cross Europe on their way to displaced persons’ camps that have been set up for the survivors. Aharon eventually makes his way to Palestine; once there, he attempts to build a new life while struggling to retain the barely remembered fragments of his old life, and he takes his first, tentative steps as a writer. As he begins to receive national attention, Aharon realizes his life’s calling: to bear witness to the unfathomable. In this unforgettable work of memory, Aharon Appelfeld offers personal glimpses into the experiences that resonate throughout his fiction.
Book Synopsis Aufbruch und Krise by : Beate Störtkuhl
Download or read book Aufbruch und Krise written by Beate Störtkuhl and published by De Gruyter Oldenbourg. This book was released on 2010 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Beiträge von Johanna Brade, Marion Brandt, Brigitte Braun, Gertrude Cepl-Kaufmann, Helmut Freiwald, Jacek Friedrich, Michael Garleff, Sewerin Gawlitta, Maria Gierlak, Regina Hartmann, Alena Janatková, Zoran Janjetovic, Jürgen Joachimsthaler, Ryszard Kaczmarek, Mart Kalm, Róbert Keményfi, Konrad Köstlin, Primus-Heinz Kucher, Wojciech Kunicki, Olga Kurilo, Beata Lakeberg, Harald Lönnecker, Petr Lozoviuk, Tomasz Majewski, Jochen Oltmer, Malgorzata Omilanowska, Miroslaw Ossowski, Marek Podlasiak, Karsten Rinas, Matthias Schöning, Stefan Sienerth, Pascal Trees, Katharina Wessely, Anja Wilhelmi, Karolina Zimna-Kawecka
