Book excerpt: The 'Service Areas' of the Cult Centre comprise a number of rooms, open spaces and passages adjacent to the buildings which form the Temple Complex (WBM 10) and the Room with the Fresco Complex (WBM 11, forthcoming). Excavation of these areas has helped to determine their history and the changes that took place in their orientation and in access to them during the 13th C BC. The finds made are of considerable interest, individually and as groups, and contribute to our understanding of the activities which took place in the areas around the principal Cult Centre buildings. The importance of Area 36, in particular, was apparent during excavation: among the finds, apart from extraordinary quantities of once whole pottery vessels, was a steatite block carved as a jewellery mould, a number of glass beads and bronze tools as well as mortars and other objects of stone. The stratigraphic position of this material confirmed that it was deposited at the same time as the ivories and other objects in the Room with the Fresco. The printed text of c 50 pages provides an illustrated account of the excavation, the structures and the principal finds together with discussions of the significance of each. The accompanying CDs contain over 375 pages of data including Room and Materials analyses similar to those presented in Fascicule 10. The full catalogues of nearly 300 intact or restorable pottery vessels of a wide variety of shapes and uses are accompanied by photographs and line drawings of each item. These are a remarkable addition to our knowledge of Mycenaean pottery, whether for comparative studies of style and decoration or for questions of function.

Book Synopsis Mycenaean Civilization by : Bryan Feuer
Download or read book Mycenaean Civilization written by Bryan Feuer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.
Book Synopsis The Mycenaeans by : Rodney Castleden
Download or read book The Mycenaeans written by Rodney Castleden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-03-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from Rodney Castleden's best-selling study Minoans, this major contribution to our understanding of the crucial Mycenaean period clearly and effectively brings together research and knowledge we have accumulated since the discovery of the remains of the civilization of Mycenae in the 1870s. In lively prose, informed by the latest research and using a full bibliography and over 100 illustrations, this vivid study delivers the fundamentals of the Mycenaean civilization including its culture, hierarchy, economy and religion. Castleden introduces controversial views of the Mycenaean palaces as temples, and studies their impressive sea empire and their crucial interaction with the outside Bronze Age world before discussing the causes of the end of their civilization. Providing clear, easy information and understanding, this is a perfect starting point for the study of the Greek Bronze Age.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean by : Eric H. Cline
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean written by Eric H. Cline and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Bronze Age, roughly 3000 to 1000 BCE, witnessed the flourishing of the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations, the earliest expansion of trade in the Aegean and wider Mediterranean Sea, the development of artistic techniques in a variety of media, and the evolution of early Greek religious practices and mythology. The period also witnessed a violent conflict in Asia Minor between warring peoples in the region, a conflict commonly believed to be the historical basis for Homer's Trojan War. The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean provides a detailed survey of these fascinating aspects of the period, and many others, in sixty-six newly commissioned articles. Divided into four sections, the handbook begins with Background and Definitions, which contains articles establishing the discipline in its historical, geographical, and chronological settings and in its relation to other disciplines. The second section, Chronology and Geography, contains articles examining the Bronze Age Aegean by chronological period (Early Bronze Age, Middle Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age). Each of the periods are further subdivided geographically, so that individual articles are concerned with Mainland Greece during the Early Bronze Age, Crete during the Early Bronze Age, the Cycladic Islands during the Early Bronze Age, and the same for the Middle Bronze Age, followed by the Late Bronze Age. The third section, Thematic and Specific Topics, includes articles examining thematic topics that cannot be done justice in a strictly chronological/geographical treatment, including religion, state and society, trade, warfare, pottery, writing, and burial customs, as well as specific events, such as the eruption of Santorini and the Trojan War. The fourth section, Specific Sites and Areas, contains articles examining the most important regions and sites in the Bronze Age Aegean, including Mycenae, Tiryns, Pylos, Knossos, Kommos, Rhodes, the northern Aegean, and the Uluburun shipwreck, as well as adjacent areas such as the Levant, Egypt, and the western Mediterranean. Containing new work by an international team of experts, The Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean represents the most comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date single-volume survey of the field. It will be indispensable for scholars and advanced students alike.
Book Synopsis Kingship in the Mycenaean World and Its Reflections in the Oral Tradition by : Ione Mylonas Shear
Download or read book Kingship in the Mycenaean World and Its Reflections in the Oral Tradition written by Ione Mylonas Shear and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few decades, there has been great interest in the problems of defining the extent and nature of kingship in the Mycenaean world. Questions concerning the degree of economic and religious power held by the king have been given special emphasis. This book surveys the conclusions drawn by individual scholars studying the Linear B tablets, contrasts their theories with our knowledge of the Mycenaean kingdoms as derived from the archaeological record, and finally compares this evidence with possible reflections in the oral tradition, specifically in the Iliad and Odyssey. This approach leads to the suggestion that the king in the Mycenaean period had only limited power over the society and its economy. Although the king appears to have controlled a large segment of the economy, it is argued here that other individuals and family groups within the kingdom also had a certain degree of economic independence.

Download or read book Midea written by Gisela Walberg and published by INSTAP Academic Press. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-volume set of text and figures and plates This volume presents the 1994-1997 excavation of the Lower Terraces of the Mycenaean citadel of Midea in the Argolid Plain of Greece. It compliments the author's previous volume on the Lower Terraces of Midea, which was published in 1998. A shrine and megaron were discovered on Terraces 9 and 10. The stratigraphy, architecture, pottery, lithics, small finds, and human and faunal remains dating from the Final Neolithic through Byzantine periods are discussed and cataloged. Additionally, the continuous sequence of LH IIIB-LH IIIC strata on the Lower Terraces revealed the ground plan and expansion of the megaron complex.
