Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This paper reviews the body of literature examining the well-being and adjustment of siblings of children with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Results within this body of research are mixed. Although a few studies have concluded there are no significant differences between siblings of children with developmental disorders and siblings of typically developing children, the majority of the research indicates that this sibling population is at increased risk of behavioral, psychological, and emotional problems. Specific factors influencing siblings' well-being and coping have been identified. Included in these factors are static variables such as family size, birth order, and socioeconomic status, as well as dynamic variables such as quality of family engagement, parental stress and well-being, and quality of peer relationships. Each sibling in this population expresses varying attitudes and has a wide range of life experiences. Nevertheless, there are common factors that seem to influence their individual experiences. Keywords: sibling, developmental disability, ASD, well-being, adjustment, coping.
