But the day one of her old clients gunned down a cop, former defense attorney Vicki Connagher lost her passion for justice, and more importantly, her lover. Evidently Detective Elias Reyes, the dead cop’s partner, can’t stomach the sight of her, since she hasn’t even talked to him in months. She left her job to live out her dream of starting her own fashion line, but heartache is her only companion. Until she brings Jesse, a homeless street artist, in from a freak Texas snowstorm. His submissive flirting brings out dominant tendencies she never knew she possessed, demanding she take him as hard and far as he’ll let her go. And he wants her to take everything he’s got. Pride kept Elias away from Vicki’s side, until she brings a homeless junkie into her house. She won’t be hurt by anyone. Not on his watch. As the days go by, the three work out an uneasy alliance. But Vicki’s joy at having Elias back in her life is tempered with a growing desire to have Jesse under her command too. Both in her bed, and in her heart. The only question that remains is whether her tough alpha cop is willing to embrace all that she is…even while she’s embracing another man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I got a damn hip musician, a poet, and . . . well, a spoiled kid, I guess." Jesse Landow, while recovering from a heart attack, describes his three sons in this quote. This sentence from this moving novel indicates that members of the Landow family see each other in categories. But as the novel unfolds, it becomes clear that the thrust of the action is toward working around those categories—divisions of attitude towards patriotism, status, education, and lifestyle that have kept apart the older, conservative father and his sons struggling toward manhood in separate ways. Marty the eldest, seeks to use his music as a way to dodge the actual combat of the hated war in Vietnam. The adolescent David comes to maturity as a writer through the encouragement of his Aunt Roe and begins to share his writings with a father who starts to accept him. Gary, the youngest, struggles with his obsessions, his fears, and his physical cowardice as he begins to find his own bravery and courage in the face of attack. While Jesse's heart attack is central to his confrontations with his sons and their values, it also occasions a long overdue working on his relationship with his wife Mary. The victim of a miscarriage and a woman bitter for years about Jesse's affairs, she gains a fresh appreciation of him as he confronts death, and she begins to think of absence from him as a crashing emptiness. In this context, the book's title refers not only to the attack itself, but to the rushing of blood, to the urge toward resolution that affects all members of the family. Heart of a Family was awarded First Place in the Associated Writing Programs Award Series in the Novel Competition for 1983. Ted Solotaroff, final judge of the contest and senior editor at Harper and Row cited the novel's "narrative interest" and "artistic maturity." He said: "The novel is distinguished by an unusual ability to portray each of the five members of the family accurately, sensitively, and movingly. I seldom see novels. . . with as much grasp of and respect for the family life of middle America. Moving steadily and with increasing depth from one member to another, Mr. Finn. . . creates a novel with interest and light."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of America’s first African American naval aviator is a “compelling portrait of a quiet hero [and] the racial climate between 1926 and 1959” (Booklist). “In the late 1940s, when every aspiring black pilot had heard of the army’s Tuskegee program, Jesse Leroy Brown set his sights on becoming a navy aviator. An outstanding student and top athlete, the 17-year-old’s ambition was met with a combination of incredulity and resistance. Yet, at a time when Jim Crow laws were rampant, Brown managed to break the color barrier to become the first black U.S. Navy pilot. Taylor puts his considerable narrative skills to good use in tracing Brown’s path from his youth in poverty-stricken Palmer’s Crossing, Miss., to his eventual induction into the heady and dangerous world of carrier aviation. Taylor based much of his research on interviews with those who knew Brown and on personal letters from more than a half-century ago [and] doesn't skimp on the indignities Brown suffered. . . . An engaging and intimate glimpse of a young pioneer who desperately wanted to earn his aviator’s wings.” —Publishers Weekly “More than a biography, this is a thrilling story of naval aviation and combat.” —School Library Journal

Then Jesse commits the one sin that Kiernan can never forgive: He abandons his roots for the Union army. Though Kiernan marries another, a part of her will always love the rebel in blue. To follow his conscience, Jesse Cameron must sacrifice his heart. He deserts his hometown, turns against his own brother, and rides away from the woman he loves. But he vows that it will not be forever. Now, bringing the war to Kiernan’s front door, Jesse has returned as the enemy, intent on winning back the widow with emerald eyes and sun-kissed hair—the beauty who has branded him a traitor.
