Um dies zu beantworten wird zunächst der Begriff des kulturellen Kapitals definiert, dann wird vorgestellt wie ein Kind durch seinen sozialen Kontext, der anhand des kulturellen Kapital bestimmt wird, beeinflusst wird und anschließend werden Daten zur aktuellen Situation von Migranten am Arbeitsmarkt herangeführt. Im Fazit wird schließlich geklärt welchen Einfluss somit das kulturelle Kapital auf die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Migranten hat. Nach Angaben des Statistischen Bundesamtes liegt im Jahre 2011 die Gesamtbevölkerung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland bei 81,8 Millionen, wobei der Anteil der Migranten bei knappen 20 Prozent liegt. Mit diesem Begriff sind hier Personen gemeint, die seit 1950 in die Bundesrepublik zugewandert sind und deren Nachkommen. Die Zahl der Erwerbspersonen beträgt ca. 42 Millionen, darunter befinden sich 34 Millionen Personen ohne und acht Millionen Personen mit Migrationshintergrund. Der Anteil der Erwerbslosen ohne Migrationshintergrund liegt bei ungefähr fünf Prozent, der der Migranten dagegen ist er fast doppelt so hoch. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass die Integration von Migranten am Arbeitsplatz also noch nicht im ausreichendem Maße gelungen ist und das, obwohl sie politisch beabsichtigt ist.

Dr. Milewski is now working for the University of Rostock, but at the time she wrote the book, she was a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. The book is a slightly-revised version of her doctoral dissertation (“Fertility of Immigrants and Their Descendants in West Germany: An Event History Approach”), which she completed at the Max Planck Institute and submitted to the University of Rostock. She was awarded highest honors, summa cum laude, for her dissertation. As Professor Jan Hoem wrote in his review of Dr. Milewski’s dissertation, the research focuses on the patterns and levels of childbearing among immigrant women. Given Germany’s varied immigration experience with refugees, asylum seekers, guest workers, and foreign-born persons of German ancestry, Dr. Milewski’s topic is of particular interest, especially with regard to differences in the patterns and levels of childbearing among various kinds of immigrants to Germany vs. native-born Germans. Numerous empirical and theoretical studies of childbearing among immigrants to various countries have been published and Dr. Milewski carefully reviews them. In this arresting book, Paul Sniderman and Louk Hagendoorn demonstrate that there are deep conflicts of values in the Netherlands. In the eyes of the Dutch, for example, Muslims oppress women, treating them as inferior to men. In the eyes of Muslim immigrants, Western Europeans deny women the respect they deserve. Western Europe has become a cultural conflict zone. Two ways of life are colliding. Sniderman and Hagendoorn show how identity politics contributed to this crisis. The very policies meant to persuade majority and minority that they are part of the same society strengthened their view that they belong to different societies. At the deepest level, the authors' findings suggest, the issue that government and citizens need to be concerned about is not a conflict of values but a clash of fundamental loyalties.

Often the perpetrators are ‘home grown’, which places the relationship between Muslims and the countries in which they live under intense political and media scrutiny, and raises questions about the success of the integration of Muslims of migrant origin. At the same time, populist politicians try to shift the blame from the few perpetrators to the supposed characteristics of all Muslims as a ‘group’ by depicting Islam as a threat that seeks to undermine liberal democratic values and institutions. The research in this volume attempts to redress the balance by focusing on the views and life experiences of the many ‘ordinary’ Muslims in their European societies of settlement, and the role that cultural and religious factors play in shaping their social relationships with majority populations and public institutions. The book is specifically interested in the relationship between cultural/religious distance and social factors that shape the life chances of Muslims relative to the majority.
