Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: Knowledge has become one of the most important resources in many economic, technological and academic domains. To understand the impact and potential of this development towards a knowledge-based economy and technology in the respective fields, we have to take a closer look at the processes responsible for bringing about new knowledge. Work in this field reveals that cooperative forms of learning are among the major sources of such knowledge. Consequently, this book supports the claim that learning is a process of cooperative knowledge creation and not simply a process of knowledge transfer. The focus of the collection of articles in this book is on how communication, cooperation, negotiation, knowledge creation, and innovation can be integrated into a comprehensive notion of learning. Cognition and technology both play a major role in the integration of these knowledge processes, as they are ultimately the foundation on which any form of cooperative learning is based. The articles in this book provide an overview of the state-of-the-art approaches, models and technologies in the highly dynamic field of cooperative learning. They cover the subject matter from both a theoretical and a practical perspective and offer several best practice examples of some of the key work being carried out in this field. German text.

Comprising insightful and topical discussions covering all learning types, learning situations and environments this edition includes key updates to sections on: School-based learning Reflexivity and biographicity E-learning The basic dimensions and types of learning What happens when intended learning does not take place The connections between learning and personal development Learning in the competition state How We Learn spans from a basic grounding of the fundmental structure and dimensions of learning and different learning types, to a detailed exploration of the differing situations and environments in which learning takes place. These include learning in different life stages, learning in the late modern competition society, and the crucial topic of learning barriers. Transformative learning, identity, the concept of competencies, workplace learning, non-learning and the interaction between learning and the educational approaches of the competition state are also examined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The more traditional forms of leadership that are based on static hierarchies and professional distance between leaders and followers are growing increasingly outdated and ineffective. As organizations face more complex interdependent tasks, leadership must become more personal in order to insure open trusting communication that will make more collaborative problem solving and innovation possible. Without open and trusting communications throughout organizations, they will continue to face the productivity and quality problems that result from reward systems that emphasize individual competition and “climbing the corporate ladder”. Authors Edgar Schein and Peter Schein recognize this reality and call for a reimagined form of leadership that coincides with emerging trends of relationship building, complex group work, diverse workforces, and cultures in which everyone feels psychologically safe. Humble Leadership calls for “here and now” humility based on a deeper understanding of the constantly evolving complexities of interpersonal, group and intergroup relationships that require shifting our focus towards the process of group dynamics and collaboration. Humble Leadership at all levels and in all working groups will be the key to achieving the creativity, adaptiveness, and agility that organizations will need to survive and grow.

Book excerpt: The heightened interest in and the rapid expansion of adult education has become a trend in a variety of environments. In order to serve these developing areas, educators, personnel directors, as well as staff development specialists require improved methods for planning learning activities within their own unique organizational contexts. In The Organization and Planning of Adult Education Kowalski examines the issues created by providing a social service in diverse organizational settings and presents a format for initiating and developing adult education programs. In order to comprehend the complexity of the context of programming within an organization, two novel components are included: first, a typology of sponsoring organizations is presented. This allows the reader to study program development in greater detail through a categorization of the sponsoring institutions. Second, organizational theory is applied to the process of programming in adult education. To be successful, the adult educator must be able to analyze both the existing organizational climate as well as to devise programs compatible with this environment. Kowalski has written a valuable resource and guide for those faced with the responsibilities of planning adult education programs in their own particular setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the late 1980s, information processing was associated with large mainframe computers and huge tape drives. During the 1990s, this trend shifted toward information processing with personal computers, or PCs. The trend toward miniaturization continues and in the future the majority of information processing systems will be small mobile computers, many of which will be embedded into larger products and interfaced to the physical environment. Hence, these kinds of systems are called embedded systems. Embedded systems together with their physical environment are called cyber-physical systems. Examples include systems such as transportation and fabrication equipment. It is expected that the total market volume of embedded systems will be significantly larger than that of traditional information processing systems such as PCs and mainframes. Embedded systems share a number of common characteristics. For example, they must be dependable, efficient, meet real-time constraints and require customized user interfaces (instead of generic keyboard and mouse interfaces). Therefore, it makes sense to consider common principles of embedded system design. Embedded System Design starts with an introduction into the area and a survey of specification models and languages for embedded and cyber-physical systems. It provides a brief overview of hardware devices used for such systems and presents the essentials of system software for embedded systems, like real-time operating systems. The book also discusses evaluation and validation techniques for embedded systems. Furthermore, the book presents an overview of techniques for mapping applications to execution platforms. Due to the importance of resource efficiency, the book also contains a selected set of optimization techniques for embedded systems, including special compilation techniques. The book closes with a brief survey on testing. Embedded System Design can be used as a text book for courses on embedded systems and as a source which provides pointers to relevant material in the area for PhD students and teachers. It assumes a basic knowledge of information processing hardware and software. Courseware related to this book is available at http://ls12-www.cs.tu-dortmund.de/~marwedel.

It is provided by organisations such as public universities, training colleges, corporate universities and employers. The successful operation of educational organisations requires sound leadership and management. Management of Adult Education Organisations in Africa examines African perspectives of managerial leadership, highlighting the importance of management in the design and effective delivery of adult education programmes. The ten chapters in this book focus on the following: Management and diversity; Leadership in adult education organisations; Management approaches in Africa; Human resources development; Organisational development and change; Ubuntu embedded leadership and organisational learning; Planning, implementation and evaluation; Time management in an organisation; Financial management; and The challenges and opportunities of managing adult education organisations. Making explicit reference to African models and understandings of management, chapters in Management of Adult Education Organisations in Africa include a set of learning objectives, definitions of key terms and clearly written summaries of the essential information and discussion points. Additional activities, case studies and suggested reading material help to provide a complete resource for students of management in an adult education context. The book will have special appeal to those wishing to learn about and embark on an educational management career. It will also be a useful reference source to those who are already in positions of management and leadership of educational organisations."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Written in an accessible and jargon-free style, Interthinking: putting talk to work explores the growing body of work on how people think creatively and productively together. Challenging purely individualistic accounts of human evolution and cognition, its internationally acclaimed authors provide analyses of real-life examples of collective thinking in everyday settings including workplaces, schools, rehearsal spaces and online environments. The authors use socio-cultural psychology to explain the processes involved in interthinking, to explore its creative power, but also to understand why collective thinking isn’t always productive or successful. With this knowledge we can maximise the constructive benefits of our ability to interthink, and understand the best ways in which we can help young people to develop, nurture and value that capability.
