This appealing idea has long been the professed aim of singers who are part of choruses affiliated with the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). Theses choruses first emerged in the 1970s, and grew out of a very American tradition of (often gender-segregated) choral singing that explicitly presents itself as a community-based activity. By taking a close look at these choruses and their mission, Heather MacLachlan unpacks the fascinating historical and cultural dynamics behind groups that seek to change society for the better by encouraging acceptance of LGBT-identified people and promoting diversity more generally. She characterizes their mission as “integrationist rather than liberationist” and zeroes in on the inherent tension between GALA’s progressive social goals and the fact that the music most often performed by GALA groups is deeply rooted in a fairly narrowly conceived tradition of art music that identifies as white, Euro-centric, and middle class--and that much of the membership identifies as white and middle class as well. Pundits often wax eloquent about the power of music, asserting that it can, in some positive way, change the world. Such statements often rest on an unexamined claim that music can and does foster social justice. "The Conductor in Performance." - The conductor will do well to look over his music, or at least the more important numbers thereof, immediately before a performance. The conductor should face his forces with a smiling countenance. Should he be nervous or anxious, he must not betray his feelings, or the performers will become troubled and fearful. At all points of possible danger, such as difficult entries, etc., the conductor should watch his forces to see that they are ready before the moment for attack arrives. Neither choralists, orchestra players, nor soloists can be depended upon to be always ready. The conductor stands between the composer and the listener as an interpreter. Upon him rests the responsibility for securing an adequate interpretation of the composition. He is therefore of necessity clothed with equally comprehensive authority. Soloists as well as chorus singers and orchestral players are properly under his direction. If a singer be incompetent, he will refuse to conduct for such. If a singer be competent and experienced, the conductor will not try to impose his will upon the artist as to matters of style in delivery concerning which persons of taste may differ, but will furnish a discreet, sympathetic accompaniment which shall do justice to the vocal, as well as to the instrumental part of a composition. If, however, the soloist should for any reason indulge in a delivery which would tend to rob the music of its legitimate effect, it is the conductor's duty to protest. The soloist has his rights; he must be given a large measure of liberty in the performance of his part, for he, as well as the conductor, has a responsibility, and will be judged by his work. To the conductor, however, belongs the wider and superior responsibility and authority.

I have taken the opportunity to include various suggestions and developments in the last ten years. Many new clarinet choirs have been established around the world during this time both in the cultural sector and as training ensembles. This last fact should not however detract from the fact that the clarinet choir as a medium is generally becoming more popular and is emerging as a permanent feature of the concert life in many countries. In the course of giving concerts at home and abroad with my own ensemble, the Austrian Clarinet Choir, I have had the opportunity of getting to know many new arrangements and original works, gaining new inspiration and learning to appreciate the rich possibilities the Clarinet Choir offers. These days, its tonal palette is not only evident to us connoisseurs. In recent times, the public has started to appreciate the scoring of this unique ensemble ranging from the now well-known E flat clarinet down to the Contrabass Clarinet. While I have seen increased interest in the genre in the course of delivering lectures on the subject in Europe, the USA, Latin- and South America, South Africa... it has become apparent that there is hardly any literature on the subject, so it was obviously important to me to have the book translated into English and Spanish and to include as much new information and additional research as I could.
