Book Synopsis The Immigrant Boy by : Marion Houldsworth
Download or read book The Immigrant Boy written by Marion Houldsworth and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Clark came to Townsville with his family in 1912 from England. Within a few weeks of arrival the father died and twelve-year old Joe has to become a bread-winner to support his family. His first job was at Rooneys’ Sawmill, sweeping sawdust. He is a likeable lad and though he feels himself to be a despised ‘Pommy’, the men soon take to him. They share their midday crib and pass the hat around when he sings. Other jobs follow, feeding the plumber’s horse; creating the sound effects at the open-air Picture-Show and nippering on the railway to the new meatworks at Alligator Creek. Through it all Joe’s keen eye and lively mind don’t miss much that is going on in the Townsville of the day, the local characters, the opium dens, the illegal gambling and the shanties of Flinders Lane. There isn’t a thing he doesn’t know about every engine in town so it seems appropriate when at length his mother makes the financial sacrifice necessary to have him apprenticed at the railway. A boy’s-eye view of Townsville in the early years of the Twentieth Century
Book Synopsis The Ottoman Origins of Modern Iraq by : Ebubekir Ceylan
Download or read book The Ottoman Origins of Modern Iraq written by Ebubekir Ceylan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the various reforms of the mid-nineteenth century Tanzimat ('reorganisation') era, Ottoman authority in Iraq was much stronger and better administered by the 1870s, than it had been when the Ottomans imposed direct rule over the region in the 1830s. Drawing upon original source documents, Ebubekir Ceylan provides the first comprehensive study of the Tanzimat reforms in Iraq in the nineteenth century, focusing on aspects of political reform, modernization and development and analyzing both the successes and failures of the reform process. The reforms included administrative and military centralization, the establishment of provincial councils and these, as well as the Ottoman tribal policy and the Ottoman contribution to the modernization of urban life and infrastructure. Ceylan demonstrates that the origins of modern Iraq can be found in the period of Ottoman rule in the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Derek Walcott, The Journeyman Years, Volume 1: Culture, Society, Literature, and Art by : Gordon Collier
Download or read book Derek Walcott, The Journeyman Years, Volume 1: Culture, Society, Literature, and Art written by Gordon Collier and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the same period in which Derek Walcott was pouring immense physical, emotional, and logistical resources into the foundation of a viable first-rate West Indian theatre company and continuing to write his inimitable poetry, he was also busy writing newspaper reviews, chiefly for the Trinidad Guardian. His prodigious reviewing activity extended far beyond those areas with which one might most readily associate his interests and convic¬tions. As Gordon Rohlehr once prescient¬ly observed, “If one wants to see a quoti¬dian workaday Walcott, one should go back to [his] well over five hundred arti¬cles, essays and reviews on painting, cinema, calypso, carnival, drama and lite¬rature,” articles which “reveal a rich, vari¬ous, witty and scrupulous intelligence in which generous humour counterpoints acerbity.” These articles capture the vital¬ity of Caribbean culture and shed addi-tional light on the aesthetic preoccupa¬tions expressed in Walcott’s essays pub¬lished in journals. The editors have exam¬ined the corpus of Walcott’s journalistic activity from its beginnings in 1950 to its peak in the early 1970s, and have made a generous selection of material from the Guardian, along with occasional pieces from such sources as Public Opinion (Kingston) and The Voice of St. Lucia (Castries). The articles in Volume 1 are organized as follows: Caribbean society, culture, and the arts generally; literature and society; periodicals; anglophone poe¬try, prose fiction, and non-fiction; African and other literatures; and the visual arts (Caribbean and beyond). The volume closes with a selection of Walcott’s mis¬cellaneous satirical essays. The volume editor Gordon Collier has written a search¬ing introductory essay on a central theme – here, a critical, comparative analysis of Walcott’s development as journalist against the historical background of press activity in the Caribbean, coupled with an illustrative discussion (drawing on Wal¬cott’s newspaper articles) of his attitudes towards prose fiction and poetry.

Book Synopsis Swords, Oaths, and Prophetic Visions by : Elizabeth A. Oyler
Download or read book Swords, Oaths, and Prophetic Visions written by Elizabeth A. Oyler and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-12-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swords, Oaths, and Prophetic Visions investigates some of the most historically important political and social issues raised by the Genpei War (1180-1185). This epic civil conflict, which ushered in Japan’s age of the warriors, is most famously articulated in the monumental narrative Heike monogatari (The Tale of the Heike). Elizabeth Oyler’s ambitious work lays out the complex interconnections between the numerous variant texts of the Heike and the historical events they describe. But Oyler’s innovative methodology also brings other texts and genres—the Gikeiki, the Soga monogatari, the Azuma kagami, and pieces from the kōwakamai (ballad-dramas) repertoire—into her analysis. Rather than concentrating on individual texts, Oyler focuses on the inter-textual relationships within this larger body of narrative and drama and the collective role of these works in creating and disseminating stories about some of the Genpei War’s most contentious events. In so doing, she works toward a new understanding of the underlying cultural problems of which these tales are symptomatic and which they attempt to address.

This book was released on 2015-07-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1984, the British Transformers comic wasn't just a successful toy advert, it taught a generation of British schoolboys how to read through its exciting action packed pages. With sales that vied with 2000AD writers Simon Furman and Bob Budiansky created a generation of fan boys that have never looked back. Stuart Webb was one such reader, and in 2012 he began a journey looking through every single issue of the series, commenting on its highs and lows. He became the first person to look at every backup strip, every comedic cartoon and each editorial and how they worked together to create the most thorough exploration of a publishing phenomenon ever undertaken. It's also personal, full of humour and silliness and even the occasionally thoughtful moment. The final result is an essential read, for Transformers fans, and those interested in the history of Marvel comics in the UK and the impact this comic had on an entire generation.
