Book Synopsis River Basin Modelling for Flood Risk Mitigation by : Donald Knight
Download or read book River Basin Modelling for Flood Risk Mitigation written by Donald Knight and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-11-17 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flooding accounts for one-third of natural disasters worldwide and for over half the deaths which occur as a result of natural disasters. As the frequency and volume of flooding increases, as a result of climate change, there is a new urgency amongst researchers and professionals working in flood risk management. River Basin Modelling for Flood Risk Mitigation brings together thirty edited papers by leading experts who gathered for the European Union’s Advanced Study Course at the University of Birmingham, UK. The scope of the course ranged from issues concerning the protection of life, to river restoration and wetland management. A variety of topics is covered in the book including climate change, hydro-informatics, hydro-meterology, river flow forecasting systems and dam-break modelling. The approach is broad, but integrated, providing an attractive and informative package that will satisfy researchers and professionals, while offering a sound introduction to students in Engineering and Geography.
Book Synopsis Floods and Landslides: Integrated Risk Assessment by : Riccardo Casale
Download or read book Floods and Landslides: Integrated Risk Assessment written by Riccardo Casale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of such natural disasters as floods and landslides, highlighting the possibility of safe and correct land planning and management by means of a global approach to territory. Since the events deriving from slope and fluvial dynamics are commonly triggered by the same factor, occur at the same time and are closely related, this book analyses floods and slope stability phenomena as different aspects of the same dynamic system: the drainage basin.
Book Synopsis International Weather Radar Networking by : C.G. Collier
Download or read book International Weather Radar Networking written by C.G. Collier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Weather Radar Networking covers all aspects of the subject in a collection of contributions drawn from all over the world. Of particular interest are the papers describing work in Eastern Europe and papers reviewing of the achievements of the Commission of the European Communities COST-73 project. During the last twenty years there has been a rapid growth in the number of digital radars deployed for operational use in Western Europe. There are now around 100, of which about half have a Doppler capability, providing wind as well as reflectivity information. The international exchange of the data from these systems promises a great enhancement of the benefits to weather forecasting and commercial users. This volume reports work being undertaken to realize those benefits and points the way to future developments of radar technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to the ways in which radar is used to address practical problems in meteorology, hydrology, and the environmental sciences, this book supplies sufficient theory to explain how radars function. The emphasis is on the characteristics of the data obtained from radar and how this data can aid an understanding of specific real life applications. Applications include the accurate forecasting of rainfall and other severe weather, the use of radar data as an input for forecasting models, the understanding of the problems of airborne pollution, and how to specify and install radar systems at remote sites.
Book Synopsis Flash Flood Forecasting Over Complex Terrain by : National Research Council
Download or read book Flash Flood Forecasting Over Complex Terrain written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's network of more than 130 Next Generation Radars (NEXRADs) is used to detect wind and precipitation to help National Weather Service forecasters monitor and predict flash floods and other storms. This book assesses the performance of the Sulphur Mountain NEXRAD in Southern California, which has been scrutinized for its ability to detect precipitation in the atmosphere below 6000 feet. The book finds that the Sulphur Mountain NEXRAD provides crucial coverage of the lower atmosphere and is appropriately situated to assist the Los Angeles-Oxnard National Weather Service Forecast Office in successfully forecasting and warning of flash floods. The book concludes that, in general, NEXRAD technology is effective in mountainous terrain but can be improved.
Book Synopsis Flood Forecasting by : Thomas E. Adams
Download or read book Flood Forecasting written by Thomas E. Adams and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood Forecasting: A Global Perspective describes flood forecast systems and operations as they currently exist at national and regional centers around the globe, focusing on the technical aspects of flood forecast systems. This book includes the details of data flow, what data is used, quality control, the hydrologic and hydraulic models used, and the unique problems of each country or system, such as glacial dam failures, ice jams, sparse data, and ephemeral streams and rivers. Each chapter describes the system, including details about its strengths and weaknesses, and covers lessons learned. This helpful resource facilitates sharing knowledge that will lead to improvements of existing systems and provides a valuable reference to those wishing to develop new forecast systems by drawing on best practices. - Covers global systems allowing readers to see a worldwide perspective with different approaches used by existing flood forecast systems - Provides historical coverage allowing readers to understand why forecast systems have developed as they have and to see how specific systems have dealt with common problems encountered - Presents a vision of what appears to be the future of hydrologic forecasting and difficulties facing hydrologic forecasting - Provides a helpful resource to facilitate improvements to existing systems based on a best practices approach
Book Synopsis Natural Disasters by : P. A. Merriman
Download or read book Natural Disasters written by P. A. Merriman and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been estimated that, as a result of natural disasters, during the 1970s and 1980s three million lives were lost worldwide, the number of disasters increased threefold, the economic losses per decade almost doubled and the insurance losses quadrupled. In the light of these figures, the United Nations proclaimed the 1990s as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction and this book focuses on the British contribution to the Decade and is supplemented by papers from America, Asia, Europe and Africa.
