Book excerpt: Money-related stress dates as far back as concepts of money itself. Formerly it may have waxed and waned in tune with the economy, but today more individuals are experiencing financial mental anguish and self-destructive behavior regardless of bull or bear markets, recessions or boom periods. From a fringe area of psychology, financial therapy has emerged to meet increasingly salient concerns. Financial Therapy is the first full-length guide to the field, bridging theory, practical methods, and a growing cross-disciplinary evidence base to create a framework for improving this crucial aspect of clients' lives. Its contributors identify money-based disorders such as compulsive buying, financial hoarding, and workaholism, and analyze typical early experiences and the resulting mental constructs ("money scripts") that drive toxic relationships with money. Clearly relating financial stability to larger therapeutic goals, therapists from varied perspectives offer practical tools for assessment and intervention, advise on cultural and ethical considerations, and provide instructive case studies. A diverse palette of research-based and practice-based models meets monetary mental health issues with well-known treatment approaches, among them: Cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapies. Collaborative relationship models. Experiential approaches. Psychodynamic financial therapy. Feminist and humanistic approaches. Stages of change and motivational interviewing in financial therapy. A text that serves to introduce and define the field as well as plan for its future, Financial Therapy is an important investment for professionals in psychotherapy and counseling, family therapy, financial planning, and social policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We learn countless ideas from our families about money. Many of them are caught and not taught. The Healthy Love & Money Way shows how our attitudes about ourselves, relationships, and money evolve from our past experiences and the attachment styles we developed as children. If you are having money fights with your significant other today, those arguments may be connected to unresolved issues from the past or methods of survival that are no longer relevant to present life. Using the latest in love and brain science, as well as anecdotes from his own evolution from an insecure attachment style to a secure one, Ed Coambs shows how healthy love and money can be achieved no matter your starting point.

The book is very practical and is based on sound psychological principles. It provides a wealth of ideas for counseling and for structuring a series of counseling sessions. It is particularly accessible to the inexperienced counsellor or psychotherapist who is often looking for some guidance on a particular topic without having to read a whole book on the subject or read something more technical. The book covers basic emotional issues such as anger, shame, anxiety, stress, grief, depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide risk, and behavioural issues like addiction, phobias, and compulsive behaviours such as self-harm and obsessive compulsive disorder. There are also chapters on relationship issues such as divorce, abuse of various kinds, dysfunctional relationships, adoption, blended families, and strategies for couple counseling. There are two chapters on personality disorders. A biblical viewpoint is added at the end of each chapter for the Christian counsellor and pastor. There is an extensive list of about 500 references along with internet references throughout, providing a rich source for further reading. The chapters are mainly independent with minimum cross-referencing.

Book excerpt: Do you overspend? Undersave? Keep secrets about money from a spouse or family member? Are you anxious about dealing with your finances? If so, you are not alone. Let's face it–just about all of have complicated, if not downright dysfunctional, relationships with money. As Drs. Brad and Ted Klontz, a father and son team of pioneers in the emerging field of financial psychology explain, our disordered relationships with money aren’t our fault. They don’t stem from a lack of knowledge or a failure of will. Instead, they are a product of subconscious beliefs and thought patterns, rooted in our childhoods, that are so deeply ingrained in us, they shape the way we deal with money our entire adult lives. But we are not powerless. By looking deep into ourselves and our pasts, we can learn to recognize these negative and self-defeating patterns of thinking, and replace them with better, healthier ones. Drawing on their decades of experience helping patients resolve their troubling issues with money, the Klontzes and describe the twelve most common “money disorders” - like financial infidelity, money avoidance, compulsive shopping, financial enabling, and more — and explain how we can learn to identify them, understand their root causes, and ultimately overcome them. So whether you want to learn how to make better financial decision, have more open communication with your spouse or kids about the family finances, or simply be better equipped to deal with the challenges of these tough economic times, this book will help you repair your dysfunctional relationship with money and live a healthier financial life.

Book excerpt: "On page 27 Jay states, 'The more prosperous people become the fewer close and intimate relationships they will have.' He is not the author that backs up everything with journal articles and research so it is a statement in a vacuum but it is very true. The other chapters are very good and poignant to the struggle wealthy Christians face. Chapter one is an overview, 'Should I build bigger barns?' The parable in Luke 12 is unpacked very well. You'd think he was a preacher. Chapter 3 talks about trust and he hints that in his estate planning issues he gives away more to charities than IRS or even children. But I echo that idea as well. Kids who inherit money often blow it. But in chapter 4 or dilemma 4 he talks about more detail in handling this transition. So it appears that the sample on page 39 is not what he recommends to everyone. Chapter four quotes Warren Buffet, 'I want to give my children enough of an inheritance that they feel like they can do anything, but not so much of an inheritance that they may choose to do nothing.' I love that quote! And that type of thought really seems to resonate well with Mr. Link also. The last collection of dilemmas 7, 8, 9 and 10 are about giving. Jay's thoughts here are right in line with National Christian Foundation ... The Gathering and Generous Giving Organizations"--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: "From shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations." Modern research confirms the truth of this adage; some 90% of affluent families lose their wealth by the end of the third generation. The true tragedy is that, as the wealth dissolves, so does the family. Members often end up disconnected and embroiled in conflict. The result is harm to the families, to their communities, and to the larger culture. The crucial question this book addresses is: What are the other 10% doing? How do families achieve success and prosperity, enjoy the fruits of that success, and pass on a legacy of financial and emotional health? What's the secret to ensuring the American Dream doesn't turn into the American Nightmare? For many families, the answer is intentionality. Flourishing families consciously work to create legacies of stewardship, values, and balance. Intentional Wealth shares some of the strategies these thriving families use to help all their members build healthy, empowered relationships with money. Intentional Wealth is about what works. It is a valuable guide for any family wanting to go from shirt sleeves to success, generation after generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think I am made of money or do you think money grows on trees are the perennial questions explored. This book seeks to explain and demonstrate why literally you are made of money, and money does grow on trees. It is your particular money tree that was planted a long time ago. Money is only a symbol for the energetic qualities that connects you to your own personal ideas about your specific sense of self-worth. The money that you make reflects to you the thoughts held in the core beliefs that are stored in the depths of your being. They determine what you think you deserve relative to your measure of self-value judgments over many years, even until this very day. The themes, patterns, and paradigms that are contained in myth and story will be used to show that the relationship to money as a value has hardly changed through cultures and time. It is the attitude and approach to the relationship with money that appears to alter and transform as people's behavior and their movement toward their sense of richness adjusts to new circumstances. The tales, poetry, and myths used will show and demonstrate the fantasies, anxieties, fears, desires, and wanting as a way for people to find and be in a right relationship with their money, as the symbol of their own wealth, resources, and richness of being.
