Book excerpt: The Virtuoso is a mainstream contemporary novel laced with the struggles and ambivalence of a young man's desire to be a jazz musician and the forces that move him in another direction - toward the classics. How this dilemma resolves itself and the escapades along the way and beyond will both rouse, yet soothe your quest for escape from the mundane! The Virtuoso is a story of romance. A love story as well as a story with scarlet moments of lust from that oldest story of all - the story of human frailty against the spear of temptation. The lives of John Dupree and Sophia Berry are played out against a canvas of music and on the darker side - prostitution. Be prepared for three dimensional characters and convoluted plots. The Virtuoso will transport you - drawing you into the story to live each scene. From the rough and tumble streets of New Orleans during World War II to the poshness of high-rise living in New York City, we join he and Sophia in the intimacy of their lives. From private piano lessons in Saint Louis to the hallowed halls of Juilliard, we follow his emergence onto the concert stages of the world. Their lives unfold in a fate that spans some 20 years. In many ways this is a symbiotic relationship. She is a benefactress in his formative years as he moves toward becoming a world class pianist while she derives love and companionship from him; something she welcomes and realizes is important in her unconventional life. Through the trauma of Korea to Sophia's court room battles in New York and Federal courts, our couple shares with us the bitter-sweetness of their lives and their love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1832 the Scottish ballad collector Peter Buchan of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, presented an anthology of risqué‚ and convivial songs and ballads to a Highland laird. When Professor Francis James Child of Harvard was preparing his magisterial edition of The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, he made inquiries about it, but it was not made available in time to be considered for his work. On his death it was presented to the Child Memorial Library at Harvard. Because of its unseemly materials, the manuscript languished there since, unprinted, though referred to now and again, and a few items from time to time made an appearance. The manuscript has now been transcribed with full annotation and with an introduction on the compiler, his times, and the Scottish bawdy tradition. It contains the texts (without tunes) of seventy-six bawdy songs and ballads, along with a long-lost scatological poem attributed to the Edinburgh writer James “Balloon” Tytler. Appendices give details of Buchan's two published collections of ballads. Additionally, there is a list of tale types and motifs, a glossary of Scots and archaic words, a bibliography, and an index. The High-Kilted Muse brings to light a long-suppressed volume and fills in a great gap in published bawdy songs and ballads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Bernstein has described conceptual "poetry pregnant with thought." Against Expression, the premier anthology of conceptual writing, presents work that is by turns thoughtful, funny, provocative, and disturbing. Editors Craig Dworkin and Kenneth Goldsmith chart the trajectory of the conceptual aesthetic from early precursors such as Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp through major avant-garde groups of the past century, including Dada, Oulipo, Fluxus, and language poetry, to name just a few. The works of more than a hundred writers from Aasprong to Zykov demonstrate a remarkable variety of new ways of thinking about the nature of texts, information, and art, using found, appropriated, and randomly generated texts to explore the possibilities of non-expressive language. --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Tower Up from the Road is a humorous and entertaining collection of travel essays made up of old favorites as well as new commentaries from Kevin Dolgin’s popular McSweeney’s Internet Tendency column, Kevin Dolgin Tells You About Places You Should Go. The work celebrates the distinctive qualities of locales the world over, and each globetrotting essay focuses on a specific place, capturing the flavors and cultures through individual observations and exceptional experiences. Funny, irreverent, and insightful, these writings eschew the bland, touristy veneer experienced by most travelers as they seek to discover what is special and unique about each destination. Covering a wide range of places and interests, from unusual experiences and humorous traveler’s foibles to voyages that are intensely personal and moving, the selected columns include "The Best Falafel in the World: Beirut, Lebanon," "The Door to Hell: Paris, France," "Kafka’s Erotic Dream: Prague, Czech Republic," "The Nesting Habits of Roman Cars: Rome, Italy," "Of Romans and Pussycats: Provence, France," and "The Third Tower Up from the Road: Huanghuacheng, China." Also featured is "The Corsican Swallowtail: Corsica, France," which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Book excerpt: When Anna Craig’s lover disappears, she hires hard nosed private eye Matt Burdock to locate the dork. Burdock finds the corpse with a cord wrapped around its neck. The ensuing investigation draws Burdock and Craig into an international intrigue that takes them from the streets of Toronto to the northern wilderness and forces each to consider whether the greater threat is the other or the killer. Abetting Burdock are Street Pete who “would have been a strapping handsome man if he was able to care for himself”, his ex-navy buddies Ptomaine Tony “whose bar food is the stuff city health inspectors are paid to eradicate” and Big Steve who “was with Tony and me when we cleared the bikers out of the bar in Halifax”, his high school chum Broker Bob who “was an advocate of conspicuous consumption, he bought a sixty foot cruiser but he was afraid of water so he preferred to cruise the bar,” and first wife Eleanor who “only showed up at the church to see if I would be there”. All do not survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sour Cream, Blueberries, and You offers a new look at life and how we live as described by author and photographer John Shubeck through more than one hundred short stories, poems, observations, and photographs recording everyday happenings. What you now see as mundane can be revealed with hidden opportunities and humor, providing new insights through his observations. An occasional bit of reality presents food for thought and opens doors to what could be. From the emotion of A Woman in Love to the vicarious sadness expressed in Today I Saw a Friend, Shubecks writing considers friendship or love in a new light. He uses the experiences he has gleaned from his family, business, and society; even nature is exposed and seen differently. By opening wonderful new worlds, new experiences have come his way with each life change. He has not only become more aware of the world around him, but he also revels in the new and exciting relationships that have come with each new start in his life.
