This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big-game hunting and trading in Central Africa from 1894 to 1904. The Robert Wright memoirs are an interesting and sometimes humorous window into the life of the European pioneers of Northern Rhodesia and the British East African Protectorate from 1894 to 1904. Robert and his brother David were initially employed as coffee farmers in the Blantyre district. Their sense of adventure soon led them to start a business hunting trophy animals and trading for ivory and rubber from Lake Tanganyika to the Katanga province of the Congo. Robert was a keen photographer and fortunately many of his photographs have survived and are included in this book.

Download or read book Borders, Mobility, Regional Integration and Development written by Christopher Changwe Nshimbi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines social, economic and political issues in West, Eastern and Southern Africa in relation to borders, human mobility and regional integration. In the process, it highlights the innovative aspects of human agency on the African continent, and presents a range of empirical case studies that shed new light on Africa’s social, economic and political realities. Further, the book explores cooperation between African nation-states, including their historical socioeconomic interconnections and governance of transboundary natural resources. Moreover, the book examines the relationship between the spatial mobility of borders and development, and the migration regimes of nation-states that share contiguous borders in different geographic territories. Further topics include the coloniality of borders, sociocultural and ethnic relations, and the impact of physical borders on human mobility and wellbeing. Given its scope, the book represents a unique resource that offers readers a wealth of new insights into today’s Africa.
Book Synopsis The Zimbabwe Culture by : Innocent Pikirayi
Download or read book The Zimbabwe Culture written by Innocent Pikirayi and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2002-07-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a unique and original perspective on the rise and fall of indigenous states of southern Zambezia, The Zimbabwe Culture analyzes the long contentious history of the remains of the remarkable cyclopean masonry, ranging from mighty capitals of traditional kings to humble farmsteads. Forming a cornerstone of the geographical lore of Africa in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, debate on the origins, development, and collapse of the Zimbabwe culture has never ceased, and with increasing archaeological research over the twentieth century, has become more complex. Thoroughly examining the growth and decline of pre-colonial states on the entire Zimbabwean Plateau and southern Zambezia, Dr. Pikirayi has contributed tremendously towards the archaeological understanding of this extraordinary culture. The Zimbabwe Culture is essential reading for all students and avocationalists of African archaeology, history, and culture.

Book Synopsis Maps: their untold stories by : Rose Mitchell
Download or read book Maps: their untold stories written by Rose Mitchell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A map is a snapshot of a place, a city, a nation or even the world at a given point in time - fascinating for what they tell us about the way our ancestors saw themselves, their neighbours and their place in the world. This magnificent collection, drawn from seven centuries of maps held in the National Archives at Kew, looks at a variety of maps, from those found in 14th Century manuscripts, through early estate maps, to sea charts, maps used in military campaigns, and maps from treaties. The text explores who the mapmakers were, the purposes for which the maps were made, and what it tells us about the politics of the time. Great images are accompanied by compelling stories. Featured is a woodcut map of 16th Century London, a map of where the bombs fell during the Second World War, and a map the first American settlers' drew when they were attempting to establish a new empire on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Richly illustrated with large scale reproductions of the maps, the book also includes some of the more amusing or esoteric maps from the National Archives, such as the map of the Great Exhibition in 1851 that was presented on a lady's glove, a London Underground map in the form of a cucumber, and a Treasure Island map used to advertise National Savings. This is a fascinating and unusual journey through the world of maps and mapmakers.
Book Synopsis Informal Cross-border Trade in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) by : Nsolo J. Mijere
Download or read book Informal Cross-border Trade in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) written by Nsolo J. Mijere and published by OSSREA. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the existence and volume of informal cross-border trade (ICBT) in the mainland SADC member states. The four basic research questions for the study were as follows: Is there informal cross-border trade among the mainland SADC member states? Do the informal traders (ICBTs) contribute to the SADC national economies and to the economies of the region as a whole, and is this revenue acknowledged by the SADC nation governments? Does the ICBT facilitate the new mission of SADC: the promotion of social, economic and political integration in the Southern African region? Lastly and perhaps most importantly have the SADC member states or SADC as an organisation formally put in place trade policies and regulations that promote the development of ICBT in the region? The study further explores the extent to which the cross-border ethnic relationships of ICBTs assist and facilitate the activities of the informal cross-border micro-trade. These questions are investigated within the context of SADC, a regional grouping with a long geo-political history as well as common colonial and socio-economic experiences that have all impacted on and restrained formal trade among SADC member states.

Download or read book White Induna written by Richard Sampson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-07-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the latest book written by Richard Sampson, an authority on the early Europeans to visit what is now Zambia. He has now turned his attention to the pre-Colonial period and concentrates on the hunters and traders who were the first Europeans to establish themselves in the country. The casualties among these people were high, not because of war or trouble with the Africans, but due to most of them developing fatal sicknesses, the sources of which were unknown to them at that time. George Westbeech was the most notable of these hardy people because he had both the personality and the command of the African languages which gained the respect of the ordinary African as well as the tribal chiefs who were ruling both sides of the Zambezi River. The Barotse people appointed him an Induna (a Senior Headman) which gave him considerable influence and power in the country which he exercised with both wisdom and good judgement.
