Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given that the nine provinces of British India as well as the 562 princely states that existed in August 1947 are not reflected on the map of India in the seventy-fifth year of its independence speaks volumes about the nation's ability to negotiate its political and administrative boundaries with its citizens. While the process of reimagining India through its constituent units - the states - has, on occasion, been due to administrative requirements, most restructuring in the internal boundaries is marked by the aspirations, assertions and adjustments of linguistic and/or ethnic groups seeking their place in the state and federal polity. For Dr Sanjeev Chopra, what started as research into land measurement instruments for revenue records and land settlements eventually became a narrative on mapping state boundaries and a record of the contemporary political history of India through its geography. The book includes captivating material from the reports of the States Reorganization Commission and Linguistic Reorganization Commission, records from state papers as well the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. A fascinating read about the multiple boundary adjustments for every state and union territory in India - from 1947 to the seventy-fifth year of independence - We, the People of the States of Bharat is the quintessential story of how India continues to redefine itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume analyses the complex historical and political context for the processes of state formation in independent India. It provides both a conceptual and empirical framework for an understanding of Indian democracy through the perspective of reorganisation of states. Following the recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) in 1956, the territorial boundaries of the states were redrawn. However, within a decade, the geo-linguistic and cultural-ideological criteria could not be considered satisfactory for the future division of states. With the formation of three new states (Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand) and the demand for Telangana statehood not accepted as yet, new dimensions and perspectives about state formation as a critical political practice have surfaced yet again in contemporary India. The book addresses a number of significant themes related to states reorganisation and its effects — questions of underdevelopment, size, political participation, governance, cultural identities — and also analyses the demand for smaller states. It focuses on different states, their historical and contemporary trajectory leading to the demand for territorial remapping and thus recognising specific political and cultural resources, and identities in the regions and sub-regions of states in India. The book will be useful for those studying politics, history, sociology, comparative politics and South Asian Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prof. CNR Rao is a living legend. Einstein paid a compliment to Mahatma Gandhi on his 70th birthday. He said, “Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth”. On Prof. Rao’s birthday, I would repeat these words. Prof. Rao is not an individual, he is an institution, he is a phenomenon. I feel lucky that our generations could see him, touch him, feel him, experience him, learn from him and get inspired by him. I have watched Prof. Rao as a scientist, as a science leader, as a science institution builder and indeed as a leader of leaders of science. I have also watched him as a wonderful, warm-hearted human being with abundant empathy. I have seen his childlike enthusiasm. I have watched him as `courage personified’. What follows is more anecdotal but solely based on my personal viewpoint. Professor Rao has had a tremendous influence on my life. He has been my guru, guide, friend and philosopher. I met him for the first time when he was the Chairman of the Research Advisory Council of the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in the nineteen eighties. I was then in my late thirties. Professor Rao has an uncanny ability to spot talent among the young. He was the President of the Indian Science Congress in the year 1988, which was held in Pune University. Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister and he inaugurated the Science Congress. Later on, during the lunch that followed, Prof. Rao made a special point to introduce me to Rajiv Gandhi. I still remember his words. He said, `Mr. Prime Minister, meet a rising young star of Indian science’. Little did I then know that within the next couple of months, he would make me a member of the Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, which he was chairing. At 42, I was the youngest member and I remember people calling me the `baby’ of the team. Getting that huge exposure at such a young age was something very special for me – I got a helicopter view of India at large. It helped me enormously as I moved on in life. Book excerpt: This stunning book will take us through an intellectual journey of "Human" and "Religion". "Bharat" has a rich history, unfortunately Bharat history was written under the influence of westerns. A must read for all. Quran and Bible from the incident of Prophet "Noah" justify yug systems of Sanatan. "God" is one but called by different names. "Vedas" was send by God lakhs of years ago. God send 124000 messengers across world to eradicate evils and establish humanity. The path of different religions are different but destination is one. "Islam" was in its height during first four centuries. Latter different kings high jacked the religion and experimented it to expand territories. These days few Bhartiye Muslims have gone astray, so Allah has withdrawn his blessing which accounts for pains, struggles and humiliations. After independence Muslims has been used as a tool kit by political parties. 99.9% people living in Bharat have a common "DNA", then why to fight in the name of "Rights" and "Religion"? Fight for your "Duties". The main objective of writing this book is to bring the attentions of people towards this important topic "Who are we?

Book excerpt: Taking cues from economics, demography, history, culture, philosophy and good old common sense, Rama Bijapurkar makes sense of the complex and inscrutable Indian market-the many Consumer Indias, their diverse and schizophrenic consumer behaviour and the way to make your company's fortune in this billion-plus market. Irreverent and insightful, this book answers the questions to twelve key facets of Consumer India. Bijapurkar explains why the Indian consumer market is 'like that only', why it will not change in a hurry, and what it takes to develop a winning 'made for India' business strategy. 'Rama has developed a very strong case for learning about India on its own terms before investing. This book is a critical read for anyone considering building a large presence for themselves in India.'-From the Foreword by C. K. Prahalad, author of The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deendayal Upadhyaya was the rare combination of an activist, a thinker philosopher and an ideologue. The concept of 'Integral Humanism' propounded by Deendayal Upadhyaya embodies the essence of human unity and development. The entire political history of Post Independence period needs to be properly recorded. Whenever such a history is written it would further raise the contribution of Deendayal Upadhyaya. What makes us proud as an Indian is Pt Deendayal's philosophy of Ekatma Manavwad or integral humanism and the same is evident in his political, social and cultural ideology. As a political ideologue he had firm belief in the slogan of Janasangh- Ek Desh Me Do Vidhan - Nahi Chalega Ek Desh Me Do Pradhan - Nahi Chalega Ek Desh Me Do Nishan - Nahi Chalega He advocated unitary form of government which envisages one centre but he always favoured decentralisation to the lowest unit of administration. His idea of infinite spiral unitary State put centre at the top and province, Janapad, Block, Village and Panchayat below it. Similarly distribution of financial powers should be such that the lowest tier of administration, viz. village Panchayat must have some autonomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good governance is not a fundamental right under the Constitution of India. Did the makers of the Constitution presume that the framework and the institutional structure designed by them would ensure that the people got social, economic, and political justice, liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship, and equality of status and of opportunity? Why is Satyam missing from mainstream Indian activities, although the National motto Satyameva Jayate is ubiquitous as part of the National Symbol, appearing in all national documents, including in currency notes? The perceived charm of the office of the District Officer is a major factor in attracting some of the brightest and most diligent among the Indian youth to the Indian Administrative Service. But should young graduates spend their energy in the prime of their youth on preparation for the Civil Services Examination, the chances of success being statistically low? Should professionally qualified persons attempt to join the Civil Services, with the risk of becoming professionally unfit with the passage of time if they do not succeed? These questions are only incidental. The book discusses key governance issues from an unbiased perspective.

As means to achieve that, three key steps are discussed: redefining the human identity system, reminding ourselves about the concept of Dharma (Ethics) and finally, redefining an individual's success. These methods are then employed to prescribe solutions to a severe problem of the modern world, the situation in the Indian subcontinent. The first chapter of the book looks back at the partition and independence of India from a neutral viewpoint. In the second chapter, the book proposes a manifesto towards a caste-free society in India. The third chapter goes on to outline a plan to reunite India as a country having multiple Political States. The fourth chapter describes some philosophical thoughts that may guide an individual through different stages of life. The final chapter describes the author's journey through three different continents that led to the writing of the book.

This book was released on 2016-03-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together multidisciplinary, situated and nuanced analyses of contingent issues framing a rapidly changing India in the 21st century. It moves beyond the ready dichotomies that are often extended to understand India as a series of contrasts and offers new insights into the complex realities of India today, thereby enabling us to anticipate the decades to come. The editors focus on three major themes, each discussed in a section: The first section, Framing the Macro-Economic Environment, defines the framework for interrogating globalisation and socio-economic changes in India over the last few decades of the 20th century spiraling into India in the 21st century. The next section, Food Security and Natural Resources, highlights critical considerations involved in feeding a burgeoning population. The discussions pose important questions in relation to the resilience of both people and planet confronting increasingly unpredictable climate-induced scenarios. The final section, Development, Activism and Changing Technologies, discusses some of the social challenges of contemporary India through the lens of inequalities and emergent activisms. The section concludes with an elaboration of the potential and promise of changing technologies and new social media to build an informed and active citizenry across existing social divides.
