Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a six-book series, We the Children follows Ben, his tech-savvy friend, Jill, and the class know-it-all, Robert, as they uncover a remarkable history and use it to protect the school. Sixth grader Benjamin Pratt loves history, which makes going to the historic Duncan Oakes School a pretty cool thing. But a wave of commercialization is hitting the area and his beloved school is slated to be torn down to make room for an entertainment park. This would be most kids’ dream—except there’s more to the developers than meets the eye… and more to the school. Because weeks before the wrecking ball is due to strike, Ben finds an old leather pouch that contains a parchment scroll with a note three students wrote in 1791. The students call themselves the Keepers of the School, and it turns out they’re not the only secret group to have existed at Duncan Oakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant, disturbing portrait of the dawn of the culture wars, when America started to tear itself apart with doubts, wild allegations, and an unfounded fear for the safety of children. During the 1980s in California, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, Ohio, and elsewhere, day care workers were arrested, charged, tried, and convicted of committing horrible sexual crimes against the children they cared for. These crimes, social workers and prosecutors said, had gone undetected for years, and they consisted of a brutality and sadism that defied all imagining. The dangers of babysitting services and day care centers became a national news media fixation. Of the many hundreds of people who were investigated in connection with day care and ritual abuse cases around the country, some 190 were formally charged with crimes, leading to more than 80 convictions. It would take years for people to realize what the defendants had said all along -- that these prosecutions were the product of a decade-long outbreak of collective hysteria on par with the Salem witch trials. Social workers and detectives employed coercive interviewing techniques that led children to tell them what they wanted to hear. Local and national journalists fanned the flames by promoting the stories' salacious aspects, while aggressive prosecutors sought to make their careers by unearthing an unspeakable evil where parents feared it most. Using extensive archival research and drawing on dozens of interviews conducted with the hysteria's major figures, n+1 editor Richard Beck shows how a group of legislators, doctors, lawyers, and parents -- most working with the best of intentions -- set the stage for a cultural disaster. The climate of fear that surrounded these cases influenced a whole series of arguments about women, children, and sex. It also drove a right-wing cultural resurgence that, in many respects, continues to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A best-seller in Italy, where it sparked intense debate, Simona Vinci's first novel was awarded the prestigious Elsa Morante Prize and subsequently was acquired by publishers around the world. Clearly an accomplished and important book, it is also a profoundly disturbing one. In a suburb of Bologna, three boys and two girls--ranging in age from ten to fifteen--enter the season of long summer days and the mysterious beauty of the cornfields surrounding the town. There, in an abandoned shack, they discover the excitement of being part of a group with its own rules and secrets. Normal kids who Rollerblade and play the same video games and Oasis and Alanis Morissette CDs that kids play everywhere, they come from normal families, their parents just as busy as most are these days. Although everyone assumes that someone will keep an eye on the kids--they're always playing out front in the parking lot, aren't they?--this assumption turns out to be false. Tiring of familiar childish pastimes, these five ride bikes or scooters out to their clubhouse and awkwardly begin their sexual initiation, liberated by innocence and driven by natural curiosity. But this rite of passage is gradually perverted by images from the adult world; as these increase in creepiness and violence, inevitably the games these confused and powerless children play, mimicking desires not their own, become horrifyingly real. Claustrophobic, mesmerizing and unflinching, What We Don't Know About Children is a brave exploration of eroticism and a harsh indictment of a society whose dark, disturbing aspects leave that most fragile, vulnerable blessing--childhood--forever at risk.

Book excerpt: From the best-selling author and rewilding pioneer Isabella Tree, When We Went Wild is a heartwarming, sustainably printed picture book about the benefits of letting nature take the lead, inspired by real-life rewilding projects. Nancy and Jake are farmers. They raise their cows and pigs, and grow their crops. They use a lot of big machines to help them, and spray a lot of chemicals to get rid of the weeds and the pests. That's what all good farmers do, isn't it? And yet, there is no wildlife living on their farm. The animals look sad. Even the trees look sad! One day, Nancy has an idea... what if they stopped using all the machines, and all the chemicals, and instead they went wild? The author’s own experience of rewilding her estate at Knepp in West Sussex, England, has influenced conservation techniques around the world that are bringing nature back to the countryside and bringing threatened species back from the brink. Ivy Kids brings you beautiful, sustainably printed books to rewild your child. They are hopeful, joyful stories and nonfiction about nature and the environment that are charmingly illustrated and printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, locally in the US, and using renewable energy. Praise for Wilding, the author’s best-selling memoir: “In a story that is part personal memoir, part work of conservation, Tree reveals the capacity of the wild to reclaim the land—as long as humans step out of the way.” —Smithsonian, “The Ten Best Science Books of 2018” “Wilding is both a timely and important book.” —Tim Flannery, The New York Review of Books

Book excerpt: Many children age seven and under struggle with social skills and often find themselves perpetually on the sidelines, in time-out, or ignored by their peers in school and on the playground. It's incredibly painful and worrisome for their parents to witness, but fortunately, they are not powerless to help their kids improve their social IQ. Getting from Me to We helps parents understand the roots of these problems, which take hold at a very young age, and give their kids the foundational skills necessary to form connections and friendships with other children. The book explains how parents can teach their children social observing skills at an early stage in their development and identify: Where their child is on the social skills ladder; How to set goals to fill in those gaps; How and when to support their child during play; How to identify play behaviors that hinder or help; and How to model good social skills and cues Written by a speech-language pathologist and researcher with expertise in socially at risk kids, the book includes profiles of children who illustrate a wide variety of characteristics and behaviors that lead to social isolation, along with effective, well-designed activities that encourage joint attention, eye contact, and social interaction. Getting from Me to We is useful for children who have social skill delays without a formal diagnosis, as well as children with autism, ADHD, anxiety, or language delays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody talks about common laws anymore. We should because the true balance of power in a Democracy is the distinction between common law and statutory law. Does that balance still exist? No, because with each passing day the principles and values upon which the United States was founded are being eroded. Federal and judicial manipulation has made the Constitution/Bill of Rights nearly irrelevant. As Americans, we are the most powerful citizens in the world. We can choose our own representatives. We can choose to acquire as much knowledge as we desire. We can choose to worship God in our own way. We can choose to turn our ideas into reality. We have opportunities tha went undreamt of before 1776 and unrealized in much of the world today. We have the power to choose an environment that encourages respect and integrity. For 200 years people had the protection of the Constitution/Bill of Rights. We educated our children, we exercised our religion, we had the freedom to speak our minds, we had property rights, we could not be subjected to double jeopardy, and the states had authority. We had common laws. For 200 years we were a people. Times have changed. We have lost that power. States must educate our children in a costly federally mandated manner, our property rights are controlled by tax laws and use constraints, and when and where we choose to exercise our beliefs is governed. We may not voice objections openly or express our opinion unless it is "politically correct." We are tried on the state and federal levels for the same crime, and the states' Constitutional power has been suspended by overreaching federal power. Our common laws and choices are now bound by federal dictate that is enlarged upon by lawyers, courts, bureaucrats, politicians and special interests with every passing day. We have lost our "democratic" privileges and rights. What has this to do with our children? Everything. If we continue to let the government usurp the power of the people, our children will never enjoy the freedoms the Founding Fathers won for us.

Book excerpt: Poison of Love is a passionate, heart-wrenching novel about the life of one family, their turbulent marriage and a horrible tragedy they will soon have to face. When Ellen Brown marries her college sweetheart, she has no idea that her life journey is about to take a different course. After supporting her new husband through Harvard Medical School with the agreement that she would then go to grad school, she is "tricked" by him into getting pregnant, not once, but twice, dashing her hopes for grad school. Their third child comes along, and soon tragedy occurs. After having progressively severe reactions to the mandated childhood inoculations, Anna suffers convulsions and becomes autistic. This riveting novel deals with the serious nature of autism, how it changes a family's life forever, and questions whether the decline of America's educational level could be due to the massive amounts of inoculations given our children. Indulging her gripping motivation to research and write a book to inform the world, Ellen discovers facts that cannot stay hidden from the public. Will Ellen stay with her handsome husband, the doctor, or will his unappreciative and insensitive ways finally have their toll on their marriage? Poison of Love is a true-to-life novel that will both inform and engage the reader, page after page.

Book excerpt: For most, 'to live the dream' is often just a laughable expression we use to describe our temporary good fortune. Not with Matt Modleski. When you read his book, you will see just how real this man lived not only his dream, but lived every day to make himself, his organization and his country better than it was the day before. Matt and I were USAF fighter pilots together, training and flying demanding missions in Europe and Southwest Asia. The excitement of flying fighters, the courage required to do it effectively, and Matt's pursuit to be the best, are all here in The American Dream. Matt also passionately reflects his insightful look at our country today. He offers a most valuable and much needed review and an eye-opening process that defines a needed course of action for our Nation. Matt shows how putting emphasis on accountability will not only "right the ship," but get our country back on course and the path our Founders intended. Reading this personal and extremely thought-provoking memoir will leave you motivated and energized. It is a great story of a modern-day American Patriot - one who is not just waving the flag, but is carrying it Bill Rial Colonel, USAF (Ret) In 1980 when Matt "Mods" Modleski joined the Air Force, less than 100 Americans had served as Thunderbird demonstration pilots. In The American Dream you'll learn about Matt's journey to join them. See how a small town boy from a working middle class family, had the audacity to dream big, and rose from the enlisted ranks to fly as a Thunderbird pilot You'll follow Matt though the mischievous adventures of his youth, and see firsthand an unwavering persistence to overcome obstacles. But Matt's journey doesn't stop there. And in the second half of this book, you'll learn about his dream for the America he wants to leave to our children and grand children. It's a big dream, built on the core American values of Family, Faith, Competitive Spirit, Perseverance and Accountability. Whether you're joining Matt in the cockpit of his F-16, or navigating through his vision of the way forward for America, you'll be happy you decided to ride along
