Book Synopsis And Somehow We Survive by : Rudy Rosenberg
Download or read book And Somehow We Survive written by Rudy Rosenberg and published by Author House. This book was released on 2008-04-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We have passed through the eye of the needle!” my father was fond of saying. And indeed we had. Now, after four years and four months of German occupation, we had survived. Neither morality nor faith had anything to do with our survival but survive we did. Money, sex and luck all had a hand in it. Germany, the most powerful nation in Europe, had decreed that all Jews were to be exterminated, not only the adults but especially the children. Once the children had been murdered, the “Jewish Question” would have been resolved once and for all. The Allied armies had finally swept through Belgium and liberated us after we had spent twenty-seven months in hiding. Our parents, Hilaire and Frieda Rosenberg went about trying to resume some semblance of family life; my sister Ruth and I would be going back to school after nearly three years of interrupted studies. It would take years for me to fathom the enormity of what we had been through, to understand why we did survive. Our parents were gamblers and people they knew through the Casinos hid us. Hilaire made large amounts of money in black-market dealings with the Germans so we could pay for the cupidity of those who would hide us. Frieda had an affair with an SS officer who warned us when we had to go into hiding. After attending the 1991 Conference of Hidden Children in New York City I knew that this unusual story of survival had to be written. Thus began a journey to a second liberation, an understanding that although they had been less than perfect parents, Hilaire and Frieda did all they humanly could do to ensure the survival of this nucleus of our family.
Book Synopsis Something More by : Alexander Kalenak M. D.
Download or read book Something More written by Alexander Kalenak M. D. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something More by Alexander Kalenak, M.D. is a remarkable personal history of a WW II childhood, a pioneering career in sports medicine, and a life seeking the true meanings of medical care and spiritual faith. As a young boy hungry for knowledge, Alexander Kalenak played dirt lot baseball, shined shoes, delivered newspapers, and worshipped his older brothers speeding along in the family's 1940 Buick. All this and more took place in a quintessential American landscape: a Pennsylvania coal mining town. In this memoir, Kalenak describes how his love of learning carried him into a career as a modern physician-scientist. He became an orthopedic surgeon just as sports medicine emerged as a field of specialty and he moved his young family to Hershey, Pennsylvania, to pursue the dream of being team physician for the Penn State Nittany Lions. For twenty-two years, he pioneered new surgical techniques and cared for countless football players and other athletes. Dr. K, or Coach K, as he was called, describes how he listened to all his patients with his surgeon's mind and with his human heart. Stories of fishing, biking in France, playing golf, and enjoying the beach with his family reveal the balance of a well-lived life. In his final illness, pancreatic cancer, Kalenak was a role model of perseverance and patience, seeking new treatments that might ultimately help others. He was named a member of the Hall of Fame of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine in 2006 and was cited as one of the Best Doctors in America. From the book: On my way to the training room where players were suiting up for the game, I would stop to think about what kinds of emergencies I might have to deal with. I would think about neck injuries, head injuries, broken legs, dislocated hips and what would have to be done quickly. I knew that for the next six or seven hours, I would be in a world of semi-controlled chaos, and I wanted to be sure I was in a frame of mind to deal with any major crisis in front of a hundred thousand people. I would pray that there would be no serious injuries, but if there were, that I would be able to apply my knowledge and my skills to take care of the players. This was my mental preparation for the game. Throughout my life I have been certain that the central thing we have been put upon earth to do is to develop and nurture relationships. If you nurture relationships, many rewards will come to you. It's just that simple.
Book Synopsis Things We Survive by : Stephanie J. Carr
Download or read book Things We Survive written by Stephanie J. Carr and published by Ocean's Edge Press. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a day of watching my grand babies play at the beach, writing this book became so clear. It wasn’t just for me but for the generations that came after me. Sharing my story may focus on history but it is the future I hope to change. Abuse and trauma hadn’t just been part of my life, but it had already touched the lives of both my daughters (nearly killing one). Somehow, I needed to find a way to be sure it did not touch my grand babies. If by sharing the history of abuse that had already transpired, by focusing on the warning signs, by acknowledging the types of abuse, by reliving the details and their triggers then my story can change more lives than just my families.

This book was released on 2022-03-24T22:59:00Z with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Du Bois’s words struck a chord with me, as I know that I, as a dark person, want to matter and live, not just survive. I want to thrive, and I want to create new systems and structures for educational, political, economic, and community freedom. #2 To matter to yourself and your students, you must matter enough to fight for justice. To dark people, that is often difficult to conceptualize, given how they are treated by their country. #3 Intersectionality is the idea that different identities, such as race, gender, and sexuality, can interact with each other and affect how a person is treated in a given situation. It is not just about listing and naming your identities, but about understanding community power and inclusivity in social justice movements. #4 Intersectionality not only helps us understand the different communities we belong to, but it also helps us understand how those communities are oppressed in different ways by different institutions.

Download or read book Black Tax written by Niq Mhlongo and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The real significance of this book lies in the fact that it tells us more about the everyday life of black South Africans. It delves into the essence of black family life and the secret anguish of family members who often battle to cope.' – Niq Mhlongo A secret torment for some, a proud responsibility for others, 'black tax' is a daily reality for thousands of black South Africans. In this thought-provoking and moving anthology, a provocative range of voices share their deeply personal stories. With the majority of black South Africans still living in poverty today, many black middle-class households are connected to working-class or jobless homes. Some believe supporting family members is an undeniable part of African culture and question whether it should even be labelled as a kind of tax. Others point to the financial pressure it places on black students and professionals, who, as a consequence, struggle to build their own wealth. Many feel they are taking over what is essentially a government responsibility. The contributions also investigate the historical roots of black tax, the concept of the black family and the black middle class. In giving voice to so many different perspectives, Black Tax hopes to start a dialogue on this widespread social phenomenon.
