Book excerpt: In his Duino Elegies, Rainer Maria Rilke suggests that animals enjoy direct access to a realm of being—the open—concealed from humans by the workings of consciousness and self-consciousness. In his own reading of Rilke, Martin Heidegger reclaims the open as the proper domain of human existence but suggests that human life remains haunted by vestiges of an animal-like relation to its surroundings. Walter Benjamin, in turn, was to show that such vestiges—what Eric Santner calls the creaturely—have a biopolitical aspect: they are linked to the processes that inscribe life in the realm of power and authority. Santner traces this theme of creaturely life from its poetic and philosophical beginnings in the first half of the twentieth century to the writings of the enigmatic German novelist W. G. Sebald. Sebald’s entire oeuvre, Santner argues, can be seen as an archive of creaturely life. For Sebald, the work on such an archive was inseparable from his understanding of what it means to engage ethically with another person’s history and pain, an engagement that transforms us from indifferent individuals into neighbors. An indispensable book for students of Sebald, On Creaturely Life is also a significant contribution to critical theory.

Book excerpt: Ghanbandra is a supernatural suspense thriller, foretelling the doomsday prophesies. Centering on a very wealthy satellite business company, the story tells of the owner's quest for women and power on a global scale. Murder, rape, and domination his goal in life. Tormented by dreams of the past, future, and present. Never knowing which will occur and when? His wife's early departure leaves him in the company of his beautiful secretary. She has her own fashion house, and is wanted desperately by one of her male models. A beautiful nineteen-year nanny looks after his twelve-year old son. The businessman wanting to bed her at his first opportunity. A seventh son of a seventh son, so too is his youngest son, who has constant visitations from his dead mother. All of his other six sons left him to work abroad, believing he murdered his wife for insurance money to keep the ailing company afloat. The superpowers gather together to try and find out why a star in the heavens, millions of miles from earth, is pulling on the axis of the earth causing massive gravitational destabilization. The Star continues to vibrate sending out massive magnetic force fields, that are pulling more and more on the magnetic core of our planet. The subterranean plates two thousand miles under the oceans are distorting and overheating from the magnetic pull from the star, which can unleash millions and millions of tons of molten lava into the oceans, thus burning our planet if the plates cannot be stopped from magnetically turning on themselves. Two rogue nuclear submarines under the poles, threaten to overheat from the intensity of the oceans water temperature, melting the polar caps and flooding the world. The super powers consult the Vatican having heard of the doomsday prophesies from the valley of the king recently unearthed. The codes of the prophecies cannot be broken in full. The prophecies tell of the doomsday Armageddon, three thousand years old, written in old Arabic and mathematical codes not seen on this earth before. Decoders and mathematicians work day and night in the deep Vatican crepts trying desperately to find answers of what lies ahead for mankind. What has been decoded tells of twelve girls, all over the globe who may be hosts to the coming of the antichrist child. The world will end in twelve days, if the codes cannot be broken, and the host child found together with the man who will carry the antichrist seed. Twelve days tick by slowly as the Vatican desperately try and find each girl in turn. Terrible exorcisms are conducted, as Cardinal after Cardinal is butchered. One girl's supernatural powers are attempted to be harnessed by one superpower, leading to a vengeful bloodbath. Once the codes are broken, a seventh son of a seventh son, is the only one who can do battle against the forces of evil, with the ancient rites and texts of the prophet David, and above all the final rite of exorcism used three thousand years ago, still undecoded, still intact, still in the casket of the visionaries handed down through the generations from pope to pope. Realizing all is lost, and believing the doomsday prophesy, the superpowers agree to help the Vatican and do all in their power to find out why the star is pulling on our axis, and why it is vibrating, so as to pinpoint where on earth this deed of insemination will be committed. All communications systems around the globe are shut down, so as the magnetic effects of the star will not turn nations against nation with the release of nuclear weapons from failed computer systems. The world will be pulled from it's axis by the Star, if the magnetic pull cannot be stabilized, sending the earth into outer space in a freezing ball of ice, or the world will incinerate by the overheating of the subterranean plates, or the world will be flooded by the melting of the ice caps. Day by day the Catholics do battle against the forces of evil, in their quest for the one host girl. Day by day t

Author Philip José Farmer blasts into space, races into the future, and travels back in time in three astoundingly original and thrilling science fiction adventures. The Lovers: Linguist Hal Yarrow catches a lucky break with an assignment on planet Ozagen, allowing him to escape the theocracy on thirty-first-century Earth. But he can’t shake Pornsen, his gapt—something like a personal guardian angel—who harangues him for even the slightest wrongdoing. Yarrow submits to Pornsen’s constant chaperoning, until he meets Jeannette Rastignac. She’s not his wife, his faith says any contact with her is sin, and there are other, odder warnings about Jeannette. But Yarrow’s in love . . . Dark Is the Sun: Fifteen billion years in the future, the Earth is cooling and dying. All the planet’s life forms have wildly mutated, civilization is primitive, and the sun is cold and black. Deyv, a young member of the Turtle Tribe, is on the hunt for his stolen soul egg, which has been purloined by the thieving creature Yawtl. Without his egg, he won’t be able to mate, so Deyv and his companions set out on a quest, leading them across a continent, through many wonders and terrors, to the lair of a mysterious off-worlder who may hold the key to an escape from their rapidly perishing planet. Riders of the Purple Wage: This Hugo Award winner introduces Chib, a young artist hiding out from the IRS in the ultimate welfare state, a society where everyone receives the same wage from birth and stays connected through a personal video device called “fido.” Chib must win a grant at his next art show—or he’ll be shipped to another society as part of a government exchange program. But his tendency toward provocation and blasphemy may be his undoing. Showcasing the epic range of Farmer’s imagination, these varied tales are brilliant, provocative, and endlessly entertaining.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices from the borderlands push against boundaries in more ways than one, as Donna M. Kabalen de Bichara ably demonstrates in this investigation into the twentieth-century autobiographical writing of four women of Mexican origin who lived in the American Southwest. Until recently, little attention has been paid to the writing of the women included in this study. As Kabalen de Bichara notes, it is precisely such historical exclusion of texts written by Mexican American women that gives particular significance to the reexamination of the five autobiographical works that provide the focus for this in-depth study. “Early Life and Education” and Dew on the Thorn by Jovita González (1904–83), deal with life experiences in Texas and were likely written between 1926 and the 1940s; both texts were published in 1997. Romance of a Little Village Girl, first published in 1955, focuses on life in New Mexico, and was written by Cleofas Jaramillo (1878–1956) when the author was in her seventies. A Beautiful, Cruel Country, by Eva Antonio Wilbur-Cruce (1904–98), introduces the reader to history and a way of life that developed in the cultural space of Arizona. Created over a ten-year period, this text was published in 1987, just eleven years before the author’s death. Hoyt Street, by Mary Helen Ponce (b. 1938), began as a research paper during the period of the autobiographer’s undergraduate studies (1974–80), and was published in its present form in 1993. These border autobiographies can be understood as attempts on the part of the Mexican American female autobiographers to put themselves into the text and thus write their experiences into existence.

Book excerpt: Ryder Christianson is a bright, adventurous young man who is discontent with the good life he has. He and his older brother, Bobby, live on a North Dakota cattle ranch where his dad, Mike, has been raising them on his own since his wife died. Since then, Ryder has been getting into fights, performing poorly academically, and rebelling against all authority. Although Mike’s faith in God is strong and he unconditionally loves his son, Ryder’s constant irresponsible behavior is making him more frustrated by the day. Even a near death experience is not enough to dissuade Ryder’s rebellious attitude and desire for freedom from all authority and responsibility. While Mike finds comfort in the scripture and his relationship with God, Ryder eventually decides to move in with his aunt in California where he believes he can live without restrictions and responsibilities. Against Mike’s better judgment, he lets Ryder go. Will Ryder’s strong spiritual upbringing be enough to hold him together in a new place or will he stray down the wrong path in pursuit of other desires? In this uplifting story of forgiveness, faith, and hope, a prodigal son on a long road to maturity must detour away from selfishness, greed, and rebellion to find his way back to God.

Book excerpt: From America’s #1 radio talk-show host and multi-million-copy #1 New York Times bestselling author, a book for young readers with a history teacher who travels back in time to have adventures with exceptional Americans. MEET RUSH LIMBAUGH’S REALLY GOOD PAL, RUSH REVERE! Okay, okay, my name’s really Rusty—but my friends call me Rush. Rush Revere. Because I’ve always been the #1 fan of the coolest colonial dude ever, Paul Revere. Talk about a rock star—this guy wanted to protect young America so badly, he rode through those bumpy, cobblestone-y streets shouting “the British are coming!” On a horse. Top of his lungs. Wind blowing, rain streaming... Well, you get the picture. But what if you could get the real picture—by actually going back in time and seeing with your own eyes how our great country came to be? Meeting the people who made it all happen—people like you and me? Hold on to your pointy triangle hats, because you can—with me, Rush Revere, seemingly ordinary substitute history teacher, as your tour guide across time! “How?” you ask? Well, there’s this portal. And a horse. My talking horse named Liberty. And—well, just trust me, I’ll get us there. We’ll begin by joining a shipload of brave families journeying on the Mayflower in 1620. Yawn? I don’t think so. 1620 was a pretty awesome time, and you’ll experience exactly what they did on that rough, dangerous ocean crossing. Together, we’ll ask the pilgrims all our questions, find out how they live, join them at the first Thanksgiving, and much more. So saddle up and let’s ride! Our exceptional nation is waiting to be discovered all over again by exceptional young patriots—like you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet today's almost fascists and learn the warning signs to intercept them on the road from populism to dictatorship. With The Wannabe Fascists, historian Federico Finchelstein offers a precise explanation of why Trumpism and similar movements across the world belong to a new political breed, the last outcome of the combined histories of fascism and populism: the wannabe fascists. This new type of populist politician is typically a legally elected leader who, unlike previous populists who were eager to distance themselves from fascism, turns to totalitarian lies, racism, and illegal means to destroy democracy from within. Drawing on almost three decades of research on the histories of fascism and populism around the world, this book lays out in clear language what the author calls the "four pillars of fascism"—xenophobia, propaganda, political violence, and ultimately dictatorship. Finchelstein carefully explains how and why wannabe fascists like Trump, Bolsonaro, and Modi embrace the first three pillars but don't quite succeed in dictatorship and total suppression of the popular vote. The Wannabe Fascists stresses the importance of preventing despots from reaching this tipping point and offers a clear warning for what's at stake.
