Book excerpt: In this gorgeously imagined novel, a journalist interviews those who knew—or thought they knew—Alejandro Bevilacqua, a brilliant, infuriatingly elusive South American writer and author of the masterpiece, In Praise of Lying. But the accounts of those in his circle of friends, lovers, and enemies become increasingly contradictory, murky, and suspect. Is everyone lying, or just telling their own subjective version of the truth? As the literary investigation unfolds and a chorus of Bevilacqua’s peers piece together the fractured reality of his life, thirty years after his death, only the reader holds the power of final judgment. In All Men Are Liars, Alberto Manguel pays homage to literature’s inventions and explores whether we can ever truly know someone, and the question of how, by whom, and for what, we ourselves will be remembered.

Book excerpt: Lying is an intrinsic part of our social fabric, but it is also a deeply problematic and misunderstood aspect of what makes us human. Ian Leslie takes us on a fascinating journey that makes us question not only our own relationship to the truth, but also virtually every daily encounter we have. On the way he dissects the history of the lie detector, how parents affect their children’s attitude to lying (and vice versa), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, the philosophical ambiguity of telling the truth, Bill Clinton’s presentational prowess, Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, and why we should be wary of anyone with more than 150 Facebook friends. Born Liars is thought-provoking, anecdotally driven narrative nonfiction at its best. Ian Leslie’s intoxicating blend of anthropology, biology, cultural history, philosophy, and popular psychology belies a serious central message: that humans have evolved and thrived in large part because of their ability to deceive.

Book excerpt: A richly textured novel tells a story of sex and longing, love and loss, and of the deceit that can lie at the heart of family relationships. “Each chapter…has the seductive aura of a finely crafted story. Liars and Saints is instructive and bittersweet and yet somehow never nostalgic” (Los Angeles Times). Set in California, Liars and Saints follows four generations of the Catholic Santerre family from World War II to the present. In a family driven as much by jealousy and propriety as by love, an unspoken tradition of deceit is passed from generation to generation. When tragedy shatters their precarious domestic lives, it takes astonishing courage and compassion to bring them back together. By turns funny and disturbing, irreverent and profound, Liars and Saints is a masterful display of Maile Meloy’s prodigious gifts and of her penetrating insight into an extraordinary American family and into the nature of human love. “Meloy may be the first great American realist of the twenty-first century: The Santerres aren’t real but they feel like they are, and the reader will not soon forget them” (The Boston Globe).

Book excerpt: An astonishing memoir for the untold number of children whose lives have been touched by bullying. Positive is a must-read for teens, their parents, educators, and administrators—a brave, visceral work that will save lives and resonate deeply. Paige Rawl has been HIV positive since birth, but growing up, she never felt like her illness defined her. On an unremarkable day in middle school, she disclosed to a friend her HIV-positive status—and within hours the bullying began. From that moment forward, every day was like walking through a minefield. Paige was never sure when or from where the next text, taunt, or hateful message would come. Then one night, desperate for escape, fifteen-year-old Paige found herself in her bathroom staring at a bottle of sleeping pills. That could have been the end of her story. Instead, it was only the beginning. Paige's memoir calls for readers to choose action over complacency, compassion over cruelty—and above all, to be Positive. Includes twenty-five photos from Paige's personal collection throughout. Supports the Common Core State Standards

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTION The King Of All Liars is a work of humorous fiction by author Teni Abegunde. This book is billed as the first ‘sit-down’ comedy, in the opposite sense to 'stand-up.' The approach is simple: you read the book as though its author was a stand-up comic delivering the lines to you in your own home. From early life to the here and now, Teni makes it clear that he wants the lazy life, and this book is a lazy, luxurious way to enjoy comedy without having to go out to a show. REVIEW “Teni Abegunde’s comedic style is mostly observational, and the book certainly feels like he is directly addressing an unseen audience in the stand-up comedy fashion. Some of the stories in The King Of All Liars are pretty incredulous, and others point out the very amusing and irritating parts of everyday life that we can all relate to.” —Readers’ Favorite FROM THE AUTHOR The concept of a sit-down comedy book evolved gradually. The idea started in high school during a regular hangout with my friends. I noticed that two girls who were visiting us that day weren't laughing at the jokes I'd been telling. Puzzled, I asked one of my friends if the girls were pregnant. "No, they’re not pregnant—they’re deaf," she replied. At first, I thought she was joking, but one of my other classmates confirmed it. Later that day, the two girls sent a note to me asking if I could write down what I’d said that had made everyone laugh. Though I didn’t mention in the note I sent back to them that I’d asked if they were pregnant, I did include a couple of things I said that were funny. The one-page joke I sent to those girls that day was the beginning of my sit-down comedy book. Many more notes followed as they kept on asking for more. These girls would later give me a name: “the Funny Hand of God.” I adopted the name quickly. It was better than the nickname my friends at school called me. You don’t want to know. Stand-up comedy has been around for many decades, and in that time many great comedians have emerged, keeping the tradition alive. These include: George Carlin, Steve Harvey, Lenny Bruce, Dave Chapelle and many more. Yet, out of millions of people who know these comedians from watching and listening to them, many have only known them by name, and by the books some of them authored. The best material from these comedians is only known to those who can hear them. A year ago at Dulles Airport, I met one of those girls who visited our school that day. She reignited the memories we shared together. I can’t describe the feelings I felt when she gestured that I am the funniest person she has ever known. From that moment on I decided I want to be known as the funniest comedian that never performed on stage. I want to deliver stand-up comedy inside a book. Someone has to do it. This is how the first sit-down comedy book came to be. And many more will follow. If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh, check out The King Of All Liars. I promise, it won't disappoint you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lies, Lying and Liars: A Psychological Analysis delves into the psychology of lies, exploring the processes of lying and its far-reaching consequences. The author’s unique approach considers the ways in which lying sculpts our realities when used by public figures such as politicians, as well as how lying is woven into our everyday life. This book dissects lies in natural social contexts, from the innocent childhood fibs to the more nefarious fabrications of con artists, cheats, and adulterers. Drawing from a rich tapestry of psychology and sociobiology, as well as research and literature from philosophy and the social sciences, this book discusses the role of lying and liars in day-to-day life. It offers profound insights into the strategies of deceit, the presence or absence of remorse, emotion and rationalisations, pathological liars, the development of lying, its connection to narcissism, the functional utility of lies, and lie detection. Lies, the book argues, are a part of the social structures inherent in everyday social life, and there is a need to explore their psychological significance in a range of natural, everyday contexts. Written in Beattie’s unique and engaging style by using elements of personal narrative and self-reflection, this is a fascinating read for students and scholars of psychology, sociology, and politics, and other disciplines of the behavioural and social sciences, as well as anyone interested in the phenomenon of lying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The All: Who Is Who? Who Am I? Who Are You? is a creative writing of subconscious fact in higher states of consciousness, through which Merhebi presents his redefinition of the philosophy of feeling and understanding of the universe. This is an ideal gift to the one who has everything and a treasure to the one who has nothing. In over one hundred chapters, he shares a very important world and entertains our minds and souls. Merhebi emerges as a thinker-feeler, doodler, humorist, lover, and soul handler, and above all, he provokes your mind. He expresses his feelings and ideas in a variety of ways poetically, theoretically, and mathematically but always challenges the readers feelings and beliefs on politics, religion, philosophy, personal self-sufficiency, trade, love, discrimination, parenthood, domination, relationships, time and space, and the structure of the universe. His self-professed aim for this book is to generate a theory of the geometric forms of the invisible common sense logic nothing to be truth. He proposes that as humans of the day, we believe in what is beyond our knowledge capacity, and we function by need. He sees the challenge as one of bringing what we feel in line with what we know, harmoniously accommodating our conscious knowledge with the needs of our subconscious feelings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you feel something is missing from your life? What We All Been Missing was written to help people build a personal relationship with God. The book tells the author's story of his experiences at church as a kid and the factors growing up that built him into the man he is today. In his book, Rodney H. Lewis discusses all the questions he had growing up. A lot of the answers, many people today still have trouble answering. Rodney seeks the truth, to show that getting close to God can allow you to see the world differently and get a better understanding of reading the Bible. With the Grace of God, in writing this book, Rodney "wanted to connect with God and help others do the same." All his life, he has found his own way of interpreting the Bible. "No one I knew ever looked at the Bible the way I did; most people don't read it." He is now sharing his belief of What We All Been Missing.
