Book excerpt: We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a warm-hearted very humorous book about the many joys and few sorrows of growing up during the 40s and 50s in a small town exiled in the Appalachian foothills. The book is about the author's small hometown which The Wall Street Journal described as "Intact but decaying: pure 19th Century." The Journal suggested that the town could be "On the scale of Williamsburg," but the town folks "Don't want to be preserved, saved or otherwise bothered by outsiders, no matter how good their intentions." This priceless narrative tells about first grade in a one-room schoolhouse called Possum Hollow, a splendid misspent youth, and a homespun education which was acquired while working in a country story and hanging out in a poolroom. The hilarious description of an endangered time and place is about colorful and unforgettable characters. It tells memorable stories and folklore which began with "I mind the time," and ended somewhat in borderline disbelief, but always in laughter. It's about nicknames, front porches, and coon dog field trials after church. And it's' about the down-home wit, sayings and opinions that made the personalities and their town so engaging. The book also tells what the old timers, the orthopedic set, would tell you, whether asked or not, about the 60s movement, the break-up of the traditional family, the present day media, and the theory of victimization. Their opinions, today, would be unfashionable to some, but refreshingly politically inappropriate to others. Not that the author's small hometown was perfect or blameless. The good old fashioned behavior by some of getting drunk on Saturday night and going to church on Sunday was alive and well. The town has its assortment of saints and sinners. But when it came to values and time-honored beliefs which now seem out-dated, back then small towns had them. maybe that's what one of John Steinbeck's characters in Mice and Men pointed out when the character commented, "There's nothing wrong anymore." We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a must read for all of you who will enjoy a nostalgic visit back to your youth or your small hometown. It will bring back happy memories of a better time and make you glad that you were there. The book is also a must read for young readers who wonder what it was really like, and if they really were "the good old days." Most of all the book is for those of you who just want a good laugh.

Book excerpt: These memoirs are a history of pioneering siblings orphaned by a murder/suicide who settled virgin prairie to build an international cattle empire only to lose it in the Great Depression. It is also a story of courage, faith, determination and family values as one family struggles to keep their home and the land they tamed. It is not heroic, it is every day life. It is about a family struggling with the realities of life while dreaming of a better future. Rich only in the blessings of life in America, solid values and devoted family they had all the things that money couldn't buy and through it all, one man who was "so damn grateful". Written from the perspective of an Iowa farmer who was born and lived on the same land for 92 years, this is a history tempered by 368 change of seasons, World Wars, a Great Depression and technology advances that have rocked the very foundations of our world. But most of all, 92 years of working with and sometimes battling Mother Nature tempered by family, friends and God. That makes this not so much a history of a family as a way of life.

Book excerpt: After an unconventional childhood that ended in the tragic death of her mother and the murder of her Alaskan mobster father, Kim Rich was left on her own at the young age of fifteen to fend for herself. Ever since then, she began a nearly lifelong pursuit in chasing what most others had—a normal life. Rich tugs at your heartstrings as you follow her journey toward normalcy, from her teen years, freshly orphaned, through her high school years spent couch-surfing at local families’ homes, then through her college years, a failed first marriage, and a rising career as a journalist. Through frank and down-to-earth storytelling, Rich also tells of her grandfather’s kidnapping, a frightening health crisis, and a six-year attempt to have children. Picking up right where her first memoir, Johnny’s Girl, left off, A Normal Life recounts the author’s vivid story of being an ordinary girl faced with extraordinary circumstances—at seemingly every turn in life—with grace, humility, and wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1874 a handful of men and one women set out for the Texas Panhandle to seek their fortunes in the great buffalo hunt. Moving south to follow the herds, they intended to establish a trading post to serve the hunter, or "hide men." At a place called Adobe Walls they dug blocks from the sod and built their center of operations After operating for only a few months, the post was attacked one sultry June morning by angry members of several Plains Indian tribes, whose physical and cultural survival depending on the great bison herd that were rapidly shrinking before the white men's guns. Initially defeated, that attacking Indians retreated. But the defenders also retreated leaving the deserted post to be burned by Indians intent on erasing all traces of the white man's presence. Nonetheless, tracing did remain, and in the ashes and dirt were buried minute details of the hide men's lives and the battle that so suddenly changed them. A little more than a century later white men again dug into the sod at Adobe Walls. The nineteenth-century men dug for profits, but the modern hunters sere looking for the natural time capsule inadvertently left by those earlier adventurers. The authors of this book, a historian and an archeologists, have dug into the sod and into far-flung archives to sift reality form the long-romanticized story of Adobe Walls, its residents, and the Indians who so fiercely resented their presence. The full story of Adobe Walls now tells us much about the life and work of the hide men, about the dying of the Plains Indian culture, and about the march of white commerce across the frontier.

Life in the Fringes presents a collection of short stories and poetry that marks the transition from the innocence of childhood to the understanding of adult life. It examines the situations a child experiences as life takes its twists and turns. Author David de Tremaudan uses autobiographical storytelling that combines old oral traditions with a personal, modern perspective. Each short story offers tale of de Tremaudans life, described from his unique perspective. It explores the personal view of a child maturing towards adulthood and his growing awareness of the values, morals, and beliefs that frame his life. Evil We look for evil apart from man Someone to personify But, the true face of evil With humankind does lie Evil is not an entity That to Satan gives a face But the truth is in the lot of us The total human race We travel the world to seek our fates For our selves and truth we search And in our search we see the ways That evil will besmirch When Rome took the world renown And its legions where conquering all Ask a Roman citizen then If it was wrong to conquer Gaul
