Book Synopsis Memories of the Way We Were by : D. D. Rocca
Download or read book Memories of the Way We Were written by D. D. Rocca and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I stood in front of the headstone which read ‘Rita Rocca Nee Tomlin (15/6/1942 - 21/10/2020)’ and thought, ‘Is this all there is? Her name on a headstone with mine to follow.’ I remembered a warm May Day in 1948, when we both kneeled at the same altar waiting for a priest to give us our first taste of Jesus. She, in her white dress, was wondering if the day would yield enough for a new doll and pram, while I wondered if mine would yield enough for roller skates and maybe a new football. I recalled the honeymoon in Jersey in 1963, Miss World at the Royal Albert Hall in 1980, and the ball that followed at the Savoy Hotel. I said, “Sorry girl, I can’t give you a Taj Mahal, but I will write a book, which will hopefully make us more than just names on a tombstone.”
Book Synopsis When I Was a Nipper by : Alan Titchmarsh
Download or read book When I Was a Nipper written by Alan Titchmarsh and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In When I Was a Nipper Alan Titchmarsh goes on a personal and nostalgic journey through post-War Britain in search of treasured values and traditions that were once the soul of society. With characteristic wit, warmth and humour he draws on the experience of his own childhood, and also takes a broader perspective, creating a wonderfully detailed and evocative portrait of a way of life that is fast disappearing, and asks what can we learn from this era of austerity to make our lives better today? Born in Yorkshire in 1949 and brought up in a Britain still recovering from World War 2, Alan remembers a time of relative calm, when it was enough to return home at night knowing that the house would still be standing. We were known throughout the world for our patience, resourcefulness and resilience. 'Mustn't grumble' was almost a national catchphrase, and queuing was second nature. Peppered with wonderful archive photographs and advertisements, When I Was a Nipper takes us back to those days, down high streets and through farmyards, on to trolley buses and into local pubs. As we move towards a global economy, as communities fragment and customs are lost, When I Was a Nipper captures a world that is fast receding into history. It's powerfully nostalgic for those who remember those days, but it's also Alan's timely call to all recession-hit Brits to heed the lessons of austerity Britain: 'make do and mend'; 'look on the bright side' and 'take the knocks on the chin'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lame duck, lame horse, lame vet, lame cows. Sandra Chesterton has been listening to “lame stories” for half a century. Now she has written them and arranged them for you to enjoy. “Lame Stories” from the mouth of Neil Chesterton, who introduces himself as “The Vet from Inglewood,” tells how starting in South Africa and growing up in Sydney he came to New Zealand as a new vet. There he meets farmers who desperately need help – too many of their cows are getting lame. With a desire to help people and cows he sets out on a journey to translate anecdotes and surveys into useful scientific answers for farmers, joining the world experts on lameness in dairy cows – mostly by just listening and taking note. What he learned in New Zealand about these cows took Neil all over the world sharing and collecting lame stories. Stories about dairy farmers, vets, professors, friendly cows, people met on the way and even on a short detour into aid work. It is quite a journey - by car, train, ship, plane, horse and donkey. On the way you will meet the “real” cow which is not a human but not a dumb animal either.

Download or read book Well Beings written by James Riley and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Riley, author of the cult hit The Bad Trip: Dark Omens, New Worlds and the End of the Sixties, returns with another incisive and thought-provoking cultural history, turning his trenchant eye to the wellness industry that emerged in the 1970s. Concepts such as wellness and self-care may feel like distinctly twenty-first century ideas, but they first gained traction as part of the New Age health movements that began to flourish in the wake of the 1960s. Riley dives into this strange and hypnotic world of panoramic coastal retreats and darkened floatation tanks, blending a page-turning narrative with illuminating explorations of the era's music, film, art and literature. Well Beings delves deep into the mind of the seventies - its popular culture, its radical philosophies, its approach to health and its sense of social crisis. It tells the story of what was sought, what was found and how these explorations helped the 'Me Decade' find itself. In so doing, it questions what good health means today and reveals what the seventies can teach us about the strange art of being well.

Download or read book The Great War written by Isobel Charman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the First World War three quarters of a million British people died – a figure so huge that it feels impossible to give it a human context. Consequently we struggle to truly grasp the impact this devastating conflict must have had on people's day-to-day lives. We resort to looking at the war from a distance, viewing its events in terms of their political or military significance. The Great War: The People's Story is different. Like the all-star ITV series it accompanies, it immerses the reader in the everyday experiences of real people who lived through the war. Using letters, diaries, and memoirs – many of which have never previously been published – Isobel Charman has painstakingly reconstructed the lives of people such as separated newly-weds Alan and Dorothy Lloyd, plucky enlisted factory-worker Reg Evans and proudly independent suffragist Kate Parry Frye. A century on, they here tell their stories in their own words, offering a uniquely personal account of the conflict. The Great War: The People's Story is both a meticulously researched piece of narrative history and a deeply moving remembrance of the extraordinary acts of extremely ordinary people.

Download or read book Travel Worlds written by Raminder Kaur and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone's Got a Traveller's Tale, but Travel Worlds tells them with a sting: African-American musicians head East for Kung-Fu kicks while paedophiles go for cheap sex pilgrimage; Western bible-bashers adopt missionary positions in India while heroic Saint George signs on as an Arab soldier in Britain; the scars of Partition mock the protocols of transit, while nomadic insurgents resist the Bangladeshi nation state with lyrical persuasion; Kula Shaker and Madonna trinketize the 'Orient' while dead tourists exchange values with travelling 'terrorists'; British Mirpuris and Black women travel back to the 'Old Country' and beyond in ways that are not quite as they seem; and ethnographers collide with tourists in the carousel of Goa's resorts. Including poetry and fiction alongside academic essays, this book refuses simplistic dichotomies of north/south and east/west and confronts head on existing conventions of writing about travel in post-colonial, literary and cultural studies.
Book Synopsis Globalization and Belonging by : Mike Savage
Download or read book Globalization and Belonging written by Mike Savage and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004-11-09 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′Globalization and Belonging′s headline message - that place matters, that locality remains vital to people, is arresting′ - Frank Webster, Professor of Sociology, City University, London Drawing on long-term empirical research into cultural practices, lifestyles and identities, Globalization and Belonging explores how far-reaching global changes are articulated locally. The authors address key sociological issues of stratification as analysis alongside ′cultural′ issues of identity, difference, choice and lifestyle. Their original argument: " Shows how globalisation theory conceives of the ′local′ " Reveals that people have a sense of elective belonging based on where they choose to put down roots " Suggests that the feel of a place is much more strongly influenced by the values and lifestyles of those migrating to it " reinvigorates debates in urban and community studies by recovering the ′local′ as an intrinsic aspect of globalisation Theoretically rigorous, the book is brought to life with direct quotations from the authors′ research, and appeals to students in urban sociology, urban geography, media studies and cultural studies.

Download or read book The Complete Clarksburg Ohio World War II Guide written by Victor Cleary and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Clarksburg Ohio World War II Guide is one of the country's most thorough case studies analyzing one village's involvement during WWII. Research, letters, a veteran index, and over 80 photographs highlight the service of 222 veterans from Clarksburg who served our country and details a number of experiences from training to battle. Clarksburg sent one-in-five of its residents to war when the national average was one-in-eight, and an astounding 45%% of Clarksburg's infantrymen and just over one-third of its aerial crewmembers, were either killed or wounded. Even more noteworthy was the high number of aircraft crashes suffered by Clarksburg's heavy bomber crews. Even though Clarksburg had its share of decorated soldiers, a majority of the village's veterans filled common roles. They were common men called upon every day to face uncommon responsibilities and a significant number found themselves in positions of authority and in a place to perform heroically in some of the war's fiercest battles.
