Book excerpt: The refractive index of photosensitive optical materials can be permanently changed by UV-irradiation. The objective of this thesis was to use such refractive index changes for the fabrication of waveguides and Bragg gratings. Integrated optics allows for the integration of optical functionality on a small footprint. A technique to realize integrated optical waveguides is the direct writing technique where a focused UV-laser is scanned over a photosensitive sample. This fabrication method is of particular interest as no mask technology is involved, which is advantageous during the prototyping phase of new devices. UV-induced refractive index changes in excess of 10×10-3 were achieved in hydrogen-loaded germanium-doped silica layers and employed to fabricate straight waveguides, S-bends, directional couplers and multi-mode interference couplers. In one of the tested material systems the refractive index was decreased by the UV-irradiation rather than increased. Without any presensitization refractive index changes down by -10×10-3 were observed. Waveguides were realized in this material system by the negative direct writing technique, i.e. the waveguide cladding instead of the core was written. The fabrication of waveguide structures by UV-induced refractive index changes is not limited to layered material systems as described so far. Directly UV-written buried X-shaped waveguides in a bulk multicomponent silicate glass have been produced by a special X-shaped writing geometry. As an example for the use of UV-induced refractive index changes for the post processing of optical devices the crosstalk in an arrayed waveguide grating was significantly reduced. Bragg gratings play a crucial role in modern optical communication systems. One interesting application area is the use as narrow-band channel filters in add/drop-multiplexers, where low chromatic dispersion values in reflection and transmission are required. Different design procedures were employed for the design of such Bragg grating structures. An optimization algorithm allowed for the consideration of constraints imposed by the writing facility which is later used for the fabrication. The designed Bragg gratings were fabricated afterwards by using a holographic writing setup which enables full control over local grating strength and period.

Book excerpt: Provides an overview of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), from fundamentals to applications Evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of particular applications, methods and techniques Contains new chapters on sensing, femtosecond laser writing of FBGs and poling of glass and optical fibers Includes a special version of the photonic simulator PicWave(tm), allowing the reader to make live simulations of many of the example devices presented in the book. This fully revised, updated and expanded second edition covers the substantial advances in the manufacture and use of FBGs in the years since the publication of the pioneering first edition. It presents a comprehensive treatise on FBGs and addresses issues such as the merits of one solution over another; why particular fabrication methods are preferred; and what advantages a user may gain from certain techniques. Beginning with the principles of FBGs, the book progresses to discuss photosensitization of optical fibers, Bragg grating fabrication and theory, properties of gratings, specific applications, sensing technology, glass poling, advances in femtosecond laser writing of Bragg gratings and FBG measurement techniques. In addition to material on telecommunications usage of FBGs, application areas such as fiber lasers and sensors are addressed in greater detail. This special version of Picwave is limited to modelling only the passive fibre devices covered in this book. However the full PicWave package is capable of modelling other non-linear and active devices such as laser diodes and SOAs as discussed in Chapter 8. More information about PicWave can be found at www.photond.com/products/picwave.htm. In addition to researchers, scientists, and graduate students, this book will be of interest to industrial practitioners in the field of fabrication of fiber optic materials and devices. Raman Kashyap, Canada Research Chair holder on Future Photonics Systems, and Professor at École Polytechnique, University of Montréal since 2003, has researched optical fibers and devices for over 30 years. He pioneered the fabrication of FBGs and applications in telecommunications and photonics. Book excerpt: Direct UV writing is an established fabrication technique allowing channel waveguides and photonic circuits to be defined in a photosensitive glass via an inscription method. A related technique, direct grating writing, enables Bragg grating structures to be defined in an interferometric dual beam set up, with definition of Bragg grating planes achieved via the periodic modulation of the interference pattern between the beams. A decade of prior work investigating the technique has led to devices for use in sensing, telecommunications, lasing and amplification applications. A requirement for greater understanding of the propagation characteristics of the waveguides has been identified, in order to maximise the effciency and effectiveness of these devices. In this thesis, a propagation loss measurement technique and a wavelength-dependent dispersion measurement technique are presented. Both depend on the presence of integrated Bragg grating structures which enable the propagation characteristics of the waveguides to be investigated. The loss measurement technique involves measurement of the Bragg grating strength, whilst the dispersion measurement technique enables the effective refractive index of the waveguide to be inferred from a measurement of reflected central grating wavelength. Applications of both techniques in a variety of situations have been investigated, with devices fabricated for use in quantum technologies and cold matter experiments amongst those produced.
