Book excerpt: "This is an urban history of London during the pivotal years of the 1960s and 1970s, when the metropolis was transformed from an industrial city that the Victorians might have recognised to an embryonic modern 'world city.' Previous work on London in these years has tended to focus upon the 1960s -in particular the 'Swinging London' phenomenon. Mary Quant, Carnaby Street and the King's Road, Chelsea, all appear in these pages, but it is argued that the 'swinging moment' of the mid-sixties was a passing symptom of a much broader transformation from an industrial to a service-based city, and it is that transformation which this book examines. London is too complex and diverse a city to be comprehended in a simple linear narrative; this book adopts instead an innovative approach to urban history, by which London life and London's transformation are examined through a number of case studies looking at specific themes and areas of the city. Consumerism and the 'experience economy', home ownership and gentrification, deindustrialisation and deprivation, racial tension and unemployment, the attrition of public services and the steady loss of confidence in public agencies - national and local - emerge as overarching themes from the individual case studies in this book. In 2013 he interviewed The 11th Duke of Marlborough - who, as the Marquis of Blandford, greeted and then accompanied the mourners after the service at St. Paul's Cathedral; on the funeral train to Hanborough; then on to St. Martin's Church, Bladon, where Churchill's burial took place. The author also interviewed in 2013 the Countess of Avon, Churchill's niece, who attended the funeral, and Mrs. Minnie Churchill, who attended Churchill's Lying-in-State and is the mother of Churchill's living heir, Randolph Churchill - Winston Churchill's great-grandson.'Churchill's Final Farewell' also explains aspects of state and ceremonial funerals, together with details of that of Churchill; the reasons for Waterloo Station, not Paddington, being chosen as the departure point to Bladon, where Churchill lies, and the story of his interment there. There are also particulars of some rather special champagne served on the funeral train with a personal message from Winston - stories that the 16th Duke of Norfolk, The Earl Marshall of England (responsible for all the arrangements for Operation Hope Not) told his close friend, the great English bowler Alec Bedser.

Book excerpt: In this new album from Pen & Sword, transport historian and photographer Jim Blake presents a selection of pictures he took around the country in British steam's final years.British Railways withdrew their last steam engines with almost indecent haste in the mid- to late–1960s, many having seen only a few years' service before consignment to the scrapheap. Jim's pictures graphically show how not only the locomotives themselves were neglected in their final years, but also their working environment. Their motive power depots were also badly run down, particularly when slated for closure upon steam's demise.Most of Jim's pictures of steam locomotives, taken fifty years ago, are previously unpublished. In BR steam's last two years, they were based in two distinctly different areas on the London & South Western main line, and in the industrial north. However, their decline was just as sad and depressing in both areas once proud depots such as London's Nine Elms, with broken windows and roof open to the sky, not repaired after wartime, piles of ash and clinker everywhere, were just as derelict as those in such places as Wigan or Sunderland. Many scenes herein invoke the sad, eerie atmosphere of steam's last months.Ironically, it was London Transport who operated the last publicly-owned standard gauge steam locomotives in 1971, some three years after BR's had gone. These are included within these pages too.
