Download or read book Wisconsin in Watercolor written by Joe Kapler and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1867, German immigrant Paul Seifert settled in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin and began capturing the distinctive farms and landscapes of his new home in vivid, detailed watercolors. Today, these paintings are coveted by American folk art collectors across the country, but Seifert’s life remains shrouded in mystery. In this first book written about Paul Seifert, author Joe Kapler examines the life of this enigmatic artist and provides context for his extraordinary art. The book features high-quality reproductions of twenty-two Seifert watercolors (more than half of which have never been published) and many close-ups of his characteristic details, from horses and hay wagons to dogs and dinner bells. Part art history treatment, part coffee table book, part research memoir, and part love letter to the Driftless Area, Wisconsin in Watercolor shines a long-awaited light on Seifert and the land he so carefully rendered over a hundred years ago.

Book excerpt: John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West is the first comprehensive study in more than fifty years of this member of the great triumvirate of American Regionalists: Thomas Hart Benton, Curry, and Grant Wood. It revives the reputation of one of the most important and controversial artists of the first half of the twentieth century, whose paintings of farm life in his native Kansas (including baptisms and tornados), of the circus, of American history, and of the American scene in general were dramatically eclipsed by the ascendancy of abstract art and the New York School at midcentury. 68 colour & 114 b/w illustrations

Download or read book The Domestic Scene (1897-1927) written by Cheryl Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully illustrated examination of a central figure in the history of interior design and the Prairie Style George Mann Niedecken (1878-1945) was a major designer in the Prairie Style, known primarily for his collaborations with Frank Lloyd Wright to furnish the interiors of several houses including the Susan Lawrence Dana House in Springfield, Illinois; the Avery Coonley House in Riverside, Illinois; and the Frederick Robie House in Chicago. Niedecken ran a successful Milwaukee business that helped revolutionize design in the upper Midwest. He called himself an "interior architect" and created domestic environments decorated with geometric abstractions, conventionalized natural motifs, muted colors with iridescent accents, and innovative furniture ensembles. His work is preserved at the Milwaukee Art Museum in the Prairie Archives, containing colored presentation renderings, working drawings, and business records from the Niedecken-Walbridge Company. The Domestic Scene reveals Niedecken as a forward-looking designer influenced by European Art Nouveau and Secessionist design as well as by the Arts and Crafts Movement. Cheryl Robertson focuses on three examples of Niedecken's commissions between 1907 and 1917 and an article by Niedecken himself (reprinted in this volume) to explore the evolving relationship between architect, interior designer, and client in the first quarter of the twentieth century. This expanded second edition includes updated photography, additional color images, and an essay by John C. Eastberg that deepens our understanding of Niedecken's career by presenting his lesser-known work in the context of Milwaukee's artistic and social history. Niedecken worked not only in the Prairie style but also in the Colonial and Renaissance Revival modes, and these works illustrate his versatility as a designer and entrepreneur.
