Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses examples concerning hydropower projects and other issue-areas of actual or potential conflict to illustrate the potential for watercourse-related conflicts to arise in southern Africa; and examines the international legal framework for addressing such conflicts. The paper presents arguments generally on the nature of conflict over water, be such conflict international, national, regional or local. The argument is made that both the reluctance of countries in this region to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses and their lack of recourse to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Revised Protocol on Shared Watercourses (which is modeled on the Convention) as a 'first resort' for resolving conflict represent a 'missed opportunity', one which will hopefully be resolved in the future when conflicts arise over shared watercourses.
Book Synopsis Understanding Water Security at Local Government Level in South Africa by : Richard Meissner
Download or read book Understanding Water Security at Local Government Level in South Africa written by Richard Meissner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides unique insights into the complex issue of water security in South Africa. Based on qualitative research conducted through face-to-face structured interviews and focus group discussions with individuals, traditional leaders, municipal officials, researchers, businesspeople and farmers in the two local governments – the Sekhukhune District and eThekwini Metropolitan Municipalities – it focuses on the peoples’ understanding of the concept of water security and whether they believe that the municipalities have achieved water security for all. The research is supported by water security-related statistics, particularly those pertaining to water quality and quantity, and an extensive literature review for the concept of water security. In addition to assessing the state of water security in both municipalities, the book presents a new water security definition and typology, and offers valuable recommendations for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing contributions by a variety of authors together in one volume is part of an attempt to show that hydropolitics is a growing discipline in its own right. The prevailing definition of hydropolitics is widened to include the elements of scale and range. This is illustrated through a focus on theoretical and legal issues, case studies from Southern Africa and a proposed research agenda. The book is an important addition to the literature on hydropolitics.

Download or read book Water Security, Conflict and Cooperation in Peri-urban South Asia written by Vishal Narain and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the implications of urbanization in South Asia for water (in- ) security in the peri-urban spaces of Dhaka and Khulna in Bangladesh, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune in India, and Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The book looks into specifically peri-urban water security issues in a context of rapid urbanization and social-environmental changes, including the changing climate and its emerging impacts. It demonstrates how urbanization processes change water flows between rural and urban areas, the implications of this processes for the water security of peri-urban populations, and how new institutions and technologies develop to mediate the relationships between peri-urban communities and water. The book seeks to further the debate on peri-urban water security, including what constitutes the peri-urban, socially differentiated access to water in peri-urban spaces, interventions for improving water access, and emerging forms of cooperation and conflict related to water access in a context of urbanization and climate change. As such, this book is an interesting read for academics with various disciplinary backgrounds, professionals working in the worlds of national and international policy, NGOs, activist groups, research and development institutes, and individual readers interested in water security and urbanization.

Book Synopsis Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa by : Msangi Josephine Phillip

This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a close examination of water scarcity as a developmental challenge facing member nations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the interventions that have been implemented to combat the situation and the challenges still outstanding. The first chapter paints the backdrop of the water scarcity problem, reviewing historical approaches from the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002) to the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development (2012), and recapping principles and agreements reached during and after these conferences. Chapter two examines the Southern Africa region’s efforts to combat water scarcity including principles, policies and strategies and the responsibility of each member to implement them. Written by the editor, J.P. Msangi, the chapter describes Namibia’s efforts to ensure management of scarce water. Beyond enacting management and pollution control regulations and raising public awareness, Namibia encourages research to ensure attainment of the requirements of both the SADC Protocol and its own water scarcity management laws. The next three chapters offer Namibia-based case studies on impacts of pollution on water treatment; on the effects of anthropogenic activities on water quality and on the effects of water transfers from dams upstream of Von Bach dam. The final chapter provides detailed summaries of the issues discussed in the book, highlighting conclusions and offering recommendations. Combating Water Scarcity in Southern Africa synthesizes issues pertinent to the SADC countries as well as to other regions, and offers research that up to now has not been conducted in Namibia.

Book Synopsis Redefining National Security by : Lester Russell Brown

Book excerpt: Abstract: The military's role in securing a nation's well-being and survival is relatively less important that it once was. Threats to security may now arise more from the relationship of man to nature than nation to nation. National economies must be sustained to maintain national security. Advanced indstrial economies are fueled by oil, a resource that is being exhausted. The production of the principle biological systems is threatened by excessive human claims. Global economy depends on the biological systems. Global food insecurity and associated food price instability becomes a source of political instability. Protecting and securing the future of a nation by strengthening international cooperation, developing alternative energy sources, and producing adequate food supplies are escalating in importance. Lagging energy transition, deterioration of biological systems, clmate modification, global food insecurity, and economic threats to security are addressed.

Book Synopsis Water Resource Conflicts and International Security by : Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi
Download or read book Water Resource Conflicts and International Security written by Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Resource Conflicts and International Security: A Global Perspective is an edited collection by Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi which analyzes the increasing global demand for water in economic and social development, and the dire need to efficiently manage this vital natural resource, particularly in water-scarce countries in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Several environmental- and human-induced factors, such as urbanization, industrialization, climate change, and agricultural needs, have created a near-crisis situation in many countries. Subsequently, there is an increasingly intense competition to utilize available water resources in these most heavily-affected regions; transboundary rivers, lakes, and streams which are shared by more than one country pose potential for political conflict, armed conflict, and, in the best of cases, cooperation. The contributors of Water Resource Conflicts and International Security present ten case studies in seven chapters, highlighting the competition between countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In his conclusion, Dhirendra K. Vajpeyi suggests several policy measures that governments may implement in order to minimize the potential for conflict.
