Book Synopsis Modeling Water Resources Management at the Basin Level by : Daene C. McKinney
Download or read book Modeling Water Resources Management at the Basin Level written by Daene C. McKinney and published by IWMI. This book was released on 1999 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is facing severe and growing challenges in maintainig water quality and meeting the rapidly growing demand for water resources. In addition, water used for irrigation, the largest use of water in most developing countries, will likely have to be diverted increasingly to meet the needs of urban areas and industry whilst remaining a prime engine of agricultural growth. Finally, environmental and other in-stream water demands become more important as economies develop. The river basin has been acknowledged to be the appropriate unit of analysis to address these chanllenges facing water resources management: and modeling at this scale can provide essential information for policy makers in their decisions on allication of resources. This paper reviews the state of the art of modeling approaches to integrated water resources management at the river basin scale, with particular focus on the potential of coupled economic hydrologic models, and concludes with directions for future modeling exercises.
Book Synopsis Water Management at the River Basin Level by : Axel Dourojeanni R.
Download or read book Water Management at the River Basin Level written by Axel Dourojeanni R. and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water and river basin management systems are created to avoid, prevent or resolve conflicts between human beings and their environment. To implement processes of integrated water and river basin management, it is necessary to form alliances or agreements with many actors. It is often difficult to coordinate these actors in Latin American or Caribbean countries due to the existence of a vast informal sector of the population, which does not comply with the legal norms. This publication examines river basin management as a way to sustainable development, and looks at the definitions, scope and operation management processes at the river basin level. It also reviews the creation of river basin organizations in Latin America and summarizes the research available on many studies of river basin management.
Book Synopsis Integrated Water Resources Management in Practice by : Roberto Lenton
Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Management in Practice written by Roberto Lenton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better water management will be crucial if we are to meet many of the key challenges of this century - feeding the worlds growing population and reducing poverty, meeting water and sanitation needs, protecting vital ecosystems, all while adapting to climate change. The approach known as Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is widely recognized as the best way forward, but is poorly understood, even within the water sector. Since a core IWRM principle is that good water management must involve the water users, the understanding and involvement of other sectors is critical for success. There is thus an urgent need for practical guidance, for both water and development professionals, based on real world examples, rather than theoretical constructs. That is what this book provides. Using case studies, the book illustrates how better water management, guided by the IWRM approach, has helped to meet a wide range of sustainable development goals. It does this by considering practical examples, looking at how IWRM has contributed, at different scales, from very local, village-level experiences to reforms at national level and beyond to cases involving trans-boundary river basins. Using these on-the-ground experiences, from both developed and developing countries in five continents, the book provides candid and practical lessons for policy-makers, donors, and water and development practitioners worldwide, looking at how IWRM principles were applied, what worked, and, equally important, what didn‘t work, and why. Book Synopsis Modeling Water Resources Management at the Basin Level by : Ximing Cai
Download or read book Modeling Water Resources Management at the Basin Level written by Ximing Cai and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops an integrated economic-hydrologic river basin model and applies it to the Maipo River Basin in central Chile. Policy simulations based on the modeling framework can serve as a guide for water resource managers and policymakers in designing appropriate water policies and establishing reform priorities for water resource allocation. Alternative analyses undertaken for the Maipo basin-a mature water economy with limited resources and competition for water across all water-using sectors-offer new insights into the changing relationships between irrigation system and basin-level water use efficiencies. They also show how these changing relationships affect farm incomes and environmental impacts. Simulations also provide new results on the role that the trading of water use rights can play in maintaining farm production levels, enhancing farmer incomes, and increasing water use efficiencies.
Book Synopsis Science, Policy and Stakeholders in Water Management by : Geoffrey Gooch
Download or read book Science, Policy and Stakeholders in Water Management written by Geoffrey Gooch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major problems facing practitioners and scientists working with water management is how to integrate knowledge and experiences from scientific, policy and stakeholder perspectives. In this book this science-policy-stakeholder interface (SPSI) is examined both analytically and through the description of practical experiences from river basins in Europe, India and South-East Asia. These include the Tungabhadra (India), Sesan (Vietnam/Cambodia), Tagus (Spain/Portugal) and Glomma (Norway), which particularly highlight issues associated with pollution, severely altered river flows and transboundary conflicts. Following two chapters which lay the framework for the book the authors describe how SPSI was managed in the case study basins and how stakeholder participation and scenarios were used to integrate different perspectives, and to facilitate the communication of different forms of knowledge. Four important aspects of water management and SPSI are then discussed; these are water pollution, land and water interaction, environmental flow and transboundary water regimes. Short descriptions of the case study rivers are provided together with analyses of how SPSI was managed in water management in these basins and policy recommendations for the basins. The book concludes by providing a series of recommendations for improving the science-policy-stakeholder interface in water management. It represents a major step forward in our understanding of how to implement integrated water resources management.
Book Synopsis Irrigation and River Basin Management by : Mark Svendsen
Download or read book Irrigation and River Basin Management written by Mark Svendsen and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing water scarcity, pressure to re-allocate water from agriculture to other uses mounts, along with a need to put in place institutional arrangements to promote 'higher value' uses of water. Many developing countries are now experimenting with establishing new institutional arrangements for managing water at the river basin level. This book, based on research by IWMI and others, reviews basin management in six developed and developing countries. It describes and applies a functional theory of river basin management, based on the idea that there is a minimum set of functions required to manage basins effectively and a set of basic conditions that enable effective management institutions to emerge. The book examines the experiences of both developed and developing countries in order to see what lessons can be learned and to identify what constitutes the core of a 'theory of river basin management'. It concludes that although it is difficult for developing countries to adopt approaches and institutional designs directly from developed countries, basic principles and lessons are transferable.

Book Synopsis Management Of Transboundary Water Resources Under Scarcity: A Multidisciplinary Approach by : Ariel Dinar
Download or read book Management Of Transboundary Water Resources Under Scarcity: A Multidisciplinary Approach written by Ariel Dinar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water scarcity due to climate change, population growth, and economic development is a critical issue in many semi-arid and arid regions around the world. Water scarcity is especially critical in regions where water is shared by several riparian states and used for competing purposes (irrigation, domestic, industry, environment, and hydropower). There is evidence that water scarcity may give rise to conflicts among the riparian states that share water basins. At the same time, there is evidence that proper arrangements among riparian states create a basis for cooperation, which is a necessary condition for economic development, food production, environmental sustainability, and poverty reduction. This book presents a collection of work presented by a group of academics and policy experts dealing with the impact of water scarcity and variability on the ability to jointly manage shared water and the derived welfare of international states and nations sharing international river basins, consisting of economics, technology, law and institutions, geography, and international relations. The book covers theoretical aspects of management of transboundary water as well as case studies from hotspots around the world. The unique aspect of this book is the multidisciplinary nature of the chapters, reflecting a new field of research that will gain popularity as water scarcity will increase over time and across regions. The chapters from the book were presented at the 'Management of Transboundary Water Resources under Scarcity: Perspectives on Agriculture and Food Security' workshop held at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, from June 22 to 23, 2015.
Book Synopsis Water Management and Public Participation by : Alka Upadhyay
Download or read book Water Management and Public Participation written by Alka Upadhyay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-11 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is an approach that promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. Without public interest and participation, successful implementation of IWRM plans for river basin cannot be possible. Further to this, management at the watershed level to assure water supplies to support livelihood (i.e. domestic water, irrigation, industries, etc.) and sustainable groundwater development requires water augmentation through water conservation structures, and pollution control will also play a vital role. In India, because of limited period of rainfall during Monsoon (i.e. three to four months), water conservation and rainwater harvesting have been practiced since ancient days in order to meet water demands throughout the year. These structures are generally constructed and operated through the public participation. Keeping in view of the importance of public partnership, the role of public partnership in context of water-related awareness and practices has been investigated in different parts of the Yamuna River basin. The investigation evaluates the impact of various water conservation devices on livelihood; compares the performance of recently developed water conservation structures with ancient structures; examines spatial variation of water-related problems in the basin; and proposes an institutional setup for effective governance.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of this Second Edition has been encouraged by the favorable reception of the first. This has offered us the opportunity to update the materials and to expand the exposition ofour central theses concerning (1) the integration of water quantity-quality issues and the treatment of water as a multi-product commodity, with the market playing a major role in determining water quality-discriminant pricing; (2) the drawbacks of public controls, regulation and enforcement, and the need to expand privatization of water supply and of water and wastewater treatment facilities to ensure their appropriate development and modernization through increased reliance on private capital; (3) the unification and centralization of water management on the river basin level in order to handle effectively the expanding pressures for water availability, for the elimination of waterborne disease, for extensive and effective pollution abatement as well as coping with the related issues of soil erosion, siltation in streams, channels, and reservoirs, protection against distress from drought and floods, and with the myriad problems relating to the environment, recreation, and navigation. We have maintained the division ofthe book into four major parts and 12 chapters.
