Book excerpt: Girl Scouting came to Washington, DC, in June 1913 when Juliette Gordon Low decided her new girls' empowerment movement needed a national headquarters. Although the headquarters moved to New York City in 1916, the council in Washington, DC, is still actively involved in the programs. Girl Scouts of the Nation's Capital chronicles the evolution of Girl Scouting in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia from 1913 to the present. It includes photographs from the Little House, where first ladies dropped by for housekeeping demonstrations, and the teahouses, where presidents enjoyed fresh beverages and cakes graciously served by Girl Scouts. Some 200 photographs will rekindle memories of making new friends, earning badges, spending summer nights at Camp May Flather, taking road trips to Rockwood, attending freezing inaugural parades, hiking along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and participating in enormous sing-alongs around the Washington Monument.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chuck Springer, once the head of International Applied Hydrogen, is asked to come back out of retirement after a major eruption of Mount St. Helens. Chuck reluctantly agrees and decides to tame Mount St. Helens by using the heat of the magma under the volcano to make hydrogen and oxygen from water. This further enrages the rogue oil company that has been trying to kill Chuck. After a request by Chucks daughter to tame an active volcano on Grand Comore, Dr. Ned McKnight from the World Heath Organization suggests the use of melting water from an iceberg to supply water for irrigation of the Kalahari Desert. Then horticulturist Dick Mackinaw asks for help to combine a process for growing switchgrass with a geothermal project. Overwhelmed by these requests Chuck talks to his brother, Dennis, about hiring Kurt Banning. Kurt helped save Chucks life after a plane crash and impressed him as a born leader.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool | B-INTACT – Guidelines by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool | B-INTACT – Guidelines written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate across the planet putting a great number of species on the brink of extinction. A decline in the plants, animals, and microorganisms threatens food security, sustainable development, and the supply of vital ecosystem services. In order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, there is an urgent need to take action to halt biodiversity loss and consequently ecosystem degradation. Since the introduction of the Aichi targets, released by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2010, the United Nations have been empowered with greater influence on decision-making impacting biodiversity. However, there was an urgent need for an easy-to-use tool to rapidly, yet effectively assess the impact on biodiversity posed by projects, programmes, and policies. As a timely response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed the Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool (B-INTACT). B-INTACT extends the scope of environmental assessments to capture biodiversity concerns, which are not accounted for in conventional carbon pricing. The tool is designed for users ranging from national investment banks, international financial institutions and policy decision-makers, and allows for a thorough biodiversity assessment of project-level activities in the Agriculture, Forestry and Land Use (AFOLU) sector. The second version of the guidelines includes additional information on how to use B-INTACT together with FAO's Earthmap platform and the Ecosystem Service Valuation Database.
