Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Deficits and Plant Growth, Volume II: Plant Water Consumption and Response focuses on internal water deficits in plants, the measurement for such deficits, and the identification of physiological and growth responses of herbaceous and woody plants to water deficiency. Partitioned into six chapters, the book discusses the rate of water consumption of agricultural plants. Concerns in this part include evapotranspiration, characteristics of plants, and climate. The discussions move on to the study of water consumption in forests. The methods used in the research, the theoretical considerations, and a review of the results are also discussed. The next part focuses on the relationship of water deficits and physiological processes. This part also introduces the discussions on the effect of water deficiency on the growth of herbaceous plants and trees, including the emergence of diseases related to water deficiency. The book is a valuable source of data for readers who are interested in pursuing studies on the effect of water deficiency on the growth of plants.

Book excerpt: A shortage of water exists, not only in the arid regions of the world, but even in some moderately humid climates. This situation is a consequence of water require ments for agriculture and industry in amounts greater than the natural surplus. Even in Europe there is increased anxiety over the state of water reserves, and shortages are forecast for the near future if industry continues to expand. During the past 50 years in the United States, water use has increased about twice as fast as the rate of population growth, and shortages have already appeared in some places. The need to conserve declining water resources which has become apparent over the last few decades has led several investigators to conclude that plants with a high rate of transpiration endanger water resources, and the growth of such plants must not be encouraged. Some think that trees withdraw more water from the soil than other plant species and evaporate it excessively through the stomata of leaves. THORNTHWAITE and HARE (1955) explained transpiration on the same thermo dynamic basis as evaporation, and calculated its rate, using DALTON'S law or modifications thereof. In spite ofthe many past and present investigations into the problems of transpiration, the biological aspects of this essential process is still poorly understood.

Book excerpt: This book presents the basic principles for evaluating water quality and treatment plant performance in a clear, innovative and didactic way, using a combined approach that involves the interpretation of monitoring data associated with (i) the basic processes that take place in water bodies and in water and wastewater treatment plants and (ii) data management and statistical calculations to allow a deep interpretation of the data. This book is problem-oriented and works from practice to theory, covering most of the information you will need, such as (a) obtaining flow data and working with the concept of loading, (b) organizing sampling programmes and measurements, (c) connecting laboratory analysis to data management, (e) using numerical and graphical methods for describing monitoring data (descriptive statistics), (f) understanding and reporting removal efficiencies, (g) recognizing symmetry and asymmetry in monitoring data (normal and log-normal distributions), (h) evaluating compliance with targets and regulatory standards for effluents and water bodies, (i) making comparisons with the monitoring data (tests of hypothesis), (j) understanding the relationship between monitoring variables (correlation and regression analysis), (k) making water and mass balances, (l) understanding the different loading rates applied to treatment units, (m) learning the principles of reaction kinetics and reactor hydraulics and (n) performing calibration and verification of models. The major concepts are illustrated by 92 fully worked-out examples, which are supported by 75 freely-downloadable Excel spreadsheets. Each chapter concludes with a checklist for your report. If you are a student, researcher or practitioner planning to use or already using treatment plant and water quality monitoring data, then this book is for you! 75 Excel spreadsheets are available to download.

Costa, PhD, executive director, Highlands Biological Station and author of Darwin's Backyard #1 New Release in Nature & Ecology, Plants, Botany, Horticulture, Trees, Biological Sciences, and Nature Writing & Essays In his debut book, internationally-recognized blogger and podcaster Matt Candeias celebrates the nature of plants and the extraordinary world of plant organisms. A botanist’s defense. Since his early days of plant restoration, this amateur plant scientist has been enchanted with flora and the greater environmental ecology of the planet. Now, he looks at the study of plants through the lens of his ever-growing houseplant collection. Using gardening, houseplants, and examples of plants around you, In Defense of Plants changes your relationship with the world from the comfort of your windowsill. The ruthless, horny, and wonderful nature of plants. Understand how plants evolve and live on Earth with a never-before-seen look into their daily drama. Inside, Candeias explores the incredible ways plants live, fight, have sex, and conquer new territory. Whether a blossoming botanist or a professional plant scientist, In Defense of Plants is for anyone who sees plants as more than just static backdrops to more charismatic life forms. In this easily accessible introduction to the incredible world of plants, you’ll find: • Fantastic botanical histories and plant symbolism • Passionate stories of flora diversity and scientific names of plant organisms • Personal tales of plantsman discovery through the study of plants If you enjoyed books like The Botany of Desire, What a Plant Knows, or The Soul of an Octopus, then you’ll love In Defense of Plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. POLJAKOFF-MAYBER and J. GALE The response of plants to saline environments is of interest to people of many disciplines. In agriculture the problem of salinity becomes more severe every year as the non-saline soils and the non-saline waters become more intensively and more extensively exploited. Further expansion of agriculture must consider the cultivation of saline soils and the use of water with a relatively high content of soluble, salts. Moreover, industrial development in many countries is causing severe water pollution, especially of rivers, and mismanagement in agriculture often induces secondary salinization of soils and sources of irrigation water. From the point of view of agriculture it is, therefore, of the utmost importance to know the various responses of plants to salinity and to understand the nature of the damage caused by salinity to agricultural crops. Botanists and plant physiologists study plants, their form, growth, metabolism and response to external stimuli. A challenging problem for them is to understand the differences between glycophytes, plants growing in a non-saline environment and halophytes, plants which normally grow in salt marshes, in sea water or in saline soils. This includes the elucidation of structural and functional adaptations which enable halophytes to tolerate the saline environment, and also questions as to whether they only tolerate the saline environment or actually thrive in it. Ecologists and environmentalists are interested in the interrelationships be tween the organism, in this case the plant, and its environment, from the climatic, edaphic and biotic points of view.
