Book excerpt: Understanding the behavior patterns of women in rural households regarding water and sanitation may be the key to solving the problem of why improvements in facilities may not be accompanied by a reduction in disease prevalence. An interdisciplinary team surveyed 312 households in two Egyp tian delta villages, examining46 of them in depth, with participant observation. Their patterns of storing water, and its use for drinking, cooking, washing, animal rearing and waste disposal are rooted in the woman's beliefs regarding cleanliness and what enhances the health and well-being of herfamily The local environment of surface and groundwater availability, quality andavailable drainage affect her choices. Otherfactors include local government institutions, available technology, information and educational facilities. time and energy expended on various practices, and social values held by the women and the community The women suggest practical solutions for their water and sanitation problems such as carts for collecting waste water, but feel powerless to influence local governments, or even their husbands, to institute new practices. Such targeted studies can disclose linkages among significant factors in the household environment, and should be undertaken for any project designed to provide effective and lasting water and sanitation in rural villages. -- From http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02508068908692072 (Sep. 14, 2016).

This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Primary Drinking Water Regulations - Revisions to the Total Coliform Rule (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations - Revisions to the Total Coliform Rule (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or the Agency) is finalizing revisions to the 1989 Total Coliform Rule (TCR). The Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR) offers a meaningful opportunity for greater public health protection beyond the 1989 TCR. Under the RTCR there is no longer a monthly maximum contaminant level (MCL) violation for multiple total coliform detections. Instead, the revisions require systems that have an indication of coliform contamination in the distribution system to assess the problem and take corrective action that may reduce cases of illnesses and deaths due to potential fecal contamination and waterborne pathogen exposure. This final rule also updates provisions in other rules that reference analytical methods and other requirements in the 1989 TCR (e.g., Public Notification and Ground Water Rules). These revisions are in accordance with the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) Amendments, which require EPA to review and revise, as appropriate, each national primary drinking water regulation no less often than every six years. These revisions also conform with the SDWA provision that requires any revision to "maintain, or provide for greater, protection of the health of persons." As with the 1989 TCR, the RTCR applies to all public water systems. This book contains: - The complete text of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations - Revisions to the Total Coliform Rule (US Environmental Protection Agency Regulation) (EPA) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section
Book Synopsis Potable Water Quality Issues in Upper Egypt by : Tamer Alia
Download or read book Potable Water Quality Issues in Upper Egypt written by Tamer Alia and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Water is life and Egypt faces an ongoing problem of unsafe water quality. People, especially in rural areas, are becoming ill and might not even be aware it is partially due unclean water they are consuming. This is a qualitative study that, from both social and public health lenses, aims at comparing the perception of families in Egyptian villages (end users) towards the water they are receiving in their homes with the situation as described (and seen by the author) by the service provider (government) within the entire process of clean water provision. In-depth interviews were conducted with families from three villages in Upper Egypt, government employees and a project manager from a non-profit organization that has carried out water projects with the government. Additionally, four samples of water were taken from the villages and tested to compare results with international standards. The analysis of the data is divided into themes under the main sections of end users and service provider. Findings reveal the reality of contaminated water despite the presence of water treatment stations. Further investigation is needed into the effectiveness of water treatment stations and into new low-tech solutions to ensure the safety of drinking water provision.
Download or read book Well Connected written by Tessa Farmer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a community in Cairo, Egypt, has adapted the many systems required for clean water. Who is responsible for ensuring access to clean potable water? In an urbanizing planet beset by climate change, cities are facing increasingly arid conditions and a precarious water future. In Well Connected, anthropologist Tessa Farmer details how one community in Cairo, Egypt, has worked collaboratively to adapt the many systems required to facilitate clean water in their homes and neighborhoods. As a community that was originally not included in Cairo's municipal systems, the residents of Ezbet Khairallah built their own potable water and wastewater infrastructure. But when the city initiated a piped sewage removal system, local residents soon found themselves with little to no power over their own water supply or wastewater removal. Throughout this transition, residents worked together to collect water at the right times to drink, bathe, do laundry, cook, and clean homes. These everyday practices had deep implications for the health of community members, as they struggled to remain hydrated, rid their children of endemic intestinal worms, avoid consuming water contaminated with sewage, and mediate the impact of fluctuating water quality. Farmer examines how the people of Cairo interact with one another, with the government, and with social structures in order to navigate the water systems (and lack thereof) that affect their day-to-day lives. Farmer's extensive ethnographic fieldwork during the implementation of the Governorate of Cairo's septic system shines through in the compelling stories of community members. Well Connected taps into the inherent sociality of water through social contacts, moral ideology, interpersonal relationships, domestic rhythms, and the everyday labor of connecting.
