Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the deadly 2007 wildfires that forced the evacuation of half a million San Diego residents, Debra Ginsberg’s new novel, The Neighbors Are Watching, examines the dark side of suburbia—a place where everyone has something to hide. Aside from their annual block party, the neighbors on Fuller Court tend to keep to themselves—which doesn’t mean that they aren’t all watching and judging each other on the sly. So when pregnant teenager Diana Jones shows up, literally, on her biological father's doorstep, the neighbors can't stop talking. Joe Montana is a handsome restaurant manager who failed to tell his wife Allison that he fathered a baby with an ex-girlfriend seventeen years ago. Allison, already harboring her own inner resentments, takes the news very badly. She isn’t the only one. Diana's bombshell arrival in their quiet cul-de-sac sets off a chain reaction of secrets and lies that threaten to engulf the neighborhood along with the approaching flames from two huge wildfires fanned by the Santa Ana winds. A former reality TV contestant who receives a steady stream of gentlemen callers at all hours, two women forced to hide their relationship in order to keep custody of their children, a sanctimonious housewife with a very checkered past, and a family who nobody ever sees—these are just a few of the warring neighbors struggling to keep up appearances and protect their own interests. But when lovely, troubled Diana disappears in the aftermath of the wildfire evacuation, leaving her newborn baby and many unanswered questions behind, the residents of Fuller Court must band together to find her before all of their carefully constructed deceptions come unraveled. A potent blend of domestic drama and suspense, The Neighbors Are Watching reveals the secrets that bloom alongside manicured flowerbeds—and the truths that lurk behind closed doors.

Book excerpt: Derek My new neighbor was going to be the death of me. Late night parties, early morning noise, and her uncontrollable dog digging up my yard. The peace and quiet I’d had for years was gone with one SOLD sign and a moving truck. But that wasn’t even the worst of it. Oh, no. The biggest problem I had with my new neighbor was those tiny shorts that hugged her curves and made my mouth water. Those shorts were the reason I kept my distance. I was either going to strangle her or claim her. Which one was a toss-up. Chelsea I should have asked around before I bought my new house. I would have found out I was moving in next to the most uptight man in my small town. A man who thought it should be lights out at eight, and silence for a full twelve hours. Not all of us had that schedule, buddy. After yet another note on my door threatening to call the cops on me and my new puppy, I decided to pay my new neighbor a visit. I didn’t expect to find his son sitting on the porch. Alone. Locked out and scared. Or for my heart to squeeze so painfully when he accepted my offer of a cookie and a warm place to wait until his dad to got home. Maybe I was too quick to judge. Because a kid so sweet couldn’t possibly come from a man who was so rude. Or maybe there was more to the single dad next door.

Book excerpt: Where do you live? The answer to this seemingly simple question can be more complicated than youd think. Drawing on personal experience, Mary Gordon examines various forms of abode-from her childhood house in Far Rockaway to apartments in Palo Alto, Rome, and the Upper West Side-as well as the very concept of “home” and how it has evolved over time. Rich in insightful observations from writers and thinkers as diverse as Gaston Bachelard, Le Corbusier, Emerson, Colette, and Edith Wharton, At Home skillfully provokes us to probe our own thoughts about what “home” truly means to each of us. Notions of safety, morality, cleanliness, comfort, and the changing nature of the family are just a few of the colors Gordon uses to paint an intriguing portrait of a place we all thought we knew.

Book excerpt: SEEN IN THE BLOOD is the story of an ordinary woman who serves an extraordinary God! You will laugh, cry and identify with the author's life. From the time of being abandoned at birth, you will walk through her times of happiness, sadness, aloneness and feelings of total helplessness. You will see the mercy, faithfulness and love of God as He continually watches over her throughout every circumstance of life. He looked down and saw her covered in her own blood, alone in a basket and commanded her to "Live!" His faithful watch-care guided and protected her before she knew Him as her Savior and Lord. He has continued that watch-care since 1953 when she met Him as her own personal Savior and Lord. She is being trained and guided by the Holy Spirit to fulfill her destiny in life. Her Scripture for life is Proverbs 3:5-6. The author readily admits she is daily learning to live this scripture. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." This book will challenge you as well as draw you to know this magnificent God! The Creator of the universe who is so personal He knows every hair upon the head of every human being upon the earth. Matthew 10:30 tells us Jesus said, "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered." As a loving father He patiently waits for mankind to call out to Him, Father, Father! SEEN IN THE BLOOD will cause you to understand the unconditional love and mercy of God in a new and exciting way! The authors desire is for her life to leave a distinctive trail that will cause others to seek and follow her Lord!

It started when she was a child. Her family was ostracized from their small town community but no one ever talked about why. As a teenager a sneak-date introduced her to a man twelve years older than her. Eventually, they told people they were married. They had two kids before Bernice was twenty years old. She did her best to conform to the traditional role of mother and housewife. She became a member of the church and community. But in contrast to some 1950s housewives, she was forced to be self-reliant. For more than a decade she worked as a nurse at the Colorado State Hospital for the insane, dealing with the unimaginable, an abusive husband, and near-death. She tried again and again to escape and save her children. But there was something around every corner, and it was never what she expected. As her story unfolds, shocking twists and turns pull Bernice through the '60s and '70s, divorce, custody battles, kidnapping, teenagers, drugs, alcohol, and more. "Bernice: A Fiery Story of Love and Family is a gripping account of survival and strength. But even deeper than its testament to endurance is its testament to love. Bernice's loyalty and love of her family shines through each page. She is a woman of honesty and strong character, but more importantly, one of great humor and a pure heart. Beautifully told by her daughter, Janet Thomas, Bernice is an inspiration to us all." - Carlene Cross, author of Fleeing Fundamentalism and The Undying West This is the riveting story of a shy, naïve girl whose decisions, experiences, and trials transform her into a woman of strength, courage, and determination. It is a revelation of how readily-acceptable certain behaviors were at that time, and how differently we perceive them now.- Helen (Thomas) Shaw, Bernice's oldest daughter

Book excerpt: Crime in the streets has remained consistently among the most conspicuous aspects of the American political landscape. Sasson argues that the significance of our national pre-occupation with the issue depends on how it is constructed or "framed" in the mass media and in everyday conversation. Drawing on the methodology for analyzing issue frames in political discourse developed by William Gamson (who has contributed a foreword to this book), Sasson identifies the five interpretative frames that comprise the crime debate: Faulty System, Social Breakdown, Blocked Opportunities, Media Violence, and Racist System. Tracking the performances of these frames in twenty small group discussions among black and white urbanites, and in a sample of newspaper columns, he demonstrates that the two "generally conservative" frames, Faulty System and Social Breakdown, are by far the most prominent. He explains their prominence in the group discussions through a careful analysis of the ideational resources (popular wisdom, personal experience, media discourse) used by the participants. Sasson's empirical findings lead him to conclude that the American preoccupation with crime will generate recurrent demands for a more expansive and punitive criminal justice system and new support for conservative politicians and their causes. Apart from its contribution to the understanding of the civic role of crime and of the politics of crime control, Crime Talk also advances a methodology for framing popular discourse, and a theoretical perspective on how ordinary citizens make sense of social problems. A study at the intersections of criminology and political sociology, it will capture the attention of a wide range of social scientists, as well as instructors in courses on social problems, the mass media and research methodology.
