Book excerpt: During our research for this book, we discovered that many veterans never talked about their experiences in the war when they were younger. Not only did WWII have a lasting effect on the soldier, but it affected the community as a whole . . . every community in the United States was affected, but this is about our community in South Texas. As a member of the "Baby Boomer" generation of Eagle Pass, I grew up knowing many of the veterans mentioned in this book. I never knew that the Postmaster, teacher, or bar owner, that I knew most of my life, were actually a POW camp survivor, a Navy medic who was forced to amputate the leg of a battle buddy, or a war hero. It is our duty, as the younger generation, to share these stories of a great and honorable generation that will soon be gone. It is our personal mission to ensure they are never forgotten. This is a journey through time-how Maverick County came to be, stories from its residents, and why WWII began . . . This book tells their stories.
