With the ship completely repaired, they seek a new sanctuary where the Reficulians have difficulties tolerating the temperature extremes. Derrick's dreams with the Keltians become more frequent as the group struggles to understand how they alone can drive the Reficulians from Earth. Their abilities have enabled them to help other survivors, yet the "fight," the "war" on the Reficulians, has hardly begun. Book excerpt: Twenty-first-century scientists make shocking discoveries on an expedition to the prehistoric age in the Hugo Award–winner’s “mystery within a mystery” (Wired). In 2070 AD, anthropologist John Gribardsun assembles a team of scientists to travel back in time to the prehistoric world of 12,000 BC. Their unprecedented mission—one that could never be repeated—is to learn about the primitive Magdalenian culture. They are willing to risk anything to finally uncover the origins of human civilization. But they could never have imagined what their findings reveal . . . or the effects they will have on the future. After emerging from their timeship, the other members of the crew begin to suspect something out of the ordinary about their enigmatic leader. As Gribardsun adapts to their primitive surroundings with remarkable ease, it is almost as if he belongs . . . Time’s Last Gift is set in Philip José Farmer’s expansive fantasy world that interweaves the lives of Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, James Bond, Flash Gordon, and other larger-than-life characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Booker Prize–winning author, a child of the Nigerian Civil War, reinvents through the story of the Atlantic slave trade the beautiful soul and resilient culture of his country. A boy and a girl meet by chance on a riverbank in Africa. One is the son of a king, struggling to find his place in the world, the other the daughter of a craftsman from the secretive tribe of master artists. The prince, entranced, stays hidden in the bushes. The girl, knowing nothing of him but his voice, agrees to meet again. When she fails to appear the next day, he begins to search for her, tracing her at last to her village where, disguised as an apprentice, he finds a place in her father’s workshop. But this is no fairy tale, no conventional love story. Their world—though they don’t know it yet—is ending. A strange wind has begun to blow, and in its wake, things are disappearing: songs, stories, artworks, and finally, people. Beautiful ships with white sails are glimpsed on the horizon… When the novel was first published in the UK in 2007 under the title Starbook, the central role of the Middle Passage was overlooked. Okri has since rewritten the book, giving it a new dimension, more light, more acumen. In 2022 the deep political impact of this extraordinary tale won’t be missed.

Book excerpt: The Song of the Nibelungs, is an epic poem written around 1200 in Middle High German. Its anonymous poet was likely from the region of Passau. The Nibelungenlied is based on an oral tradition that has some of its origin in historic events and individuals of the 5th and 6th centuries. The poem is split into two parts: in the first part, Siegfried comes to Worms to acquire the hand of the Burgundian princess Kriemhild from her brother King Gunther. Gunther agrees to let Siegfried marry Kriemhild if Siegfried helps Gunther acquire the warrior-queen Brünhild as his wife. Siegfried does this and marries Kriemhild; however Brünhild and Kriemhild become rivals, leading eventually to Siegfried's murder by the Burgundian vassal Hagen with Gunther's involvement. In the second part, the widow Kriemhild is married to Etzel, king of the Huns. She later invites her brother and his court to visit Etzel's kingdom intending to kill Hagen. Her revenge results in the death of all the Burgundians who came to Etzel's court as well as the destruction of Etzel's kingdom and the death of Kriemhild herself. The Nibelungenlied was the first heroic epic put into writing in Germany, helping to found a larger genre of written heroic poetry.

Not only is his beloved wife dead, but across the Sea of Whispers, in the island fortress known as the Citadel, Wulfgar’s bride, the sorceress Serena, plots to continue her husband’s nefarious plans, aided by the Scroll of the Vagaries and the advice of the otherworldly Heretics. Although the ranks of Tristan’s faithful soldiers were decimated in recent battle, the prince nevertheless plans a bold surprise attack. But on the eve of the mission, disaster strikes. From behind the towering azure wall of magical energy in the forbidding face of the massive Tolenka Mountains comes Xanthus, a powerful warrior dispatched by the Heretics to bring Tristan into their mysterious realm. A master of a mystical martial art against which even the great swordsman Tristan is helpless, Xanthus launches a reign of terror against Eutracia’s innocent subjects, compelling Tristan to journey behind the azure wall. There, in a magical land as beautiful as it is violent, Tristan will learn the shocking truth about the destiny he and Shailiha, his sister, will share. In Tristan’s absence, Shailiha must lead the fleet of Black Ships against the Citadel, accompanied by the wizards Faegan and Wigg and the beautiful pirate queen Tyranny. But unknown to them, Serena has prepared a deadly trap with hellish creatures summoned by the Heretics. And as Shailiha’s troops sail blindly into danger, Serena is preparing a spell unlike anything the world has ever seen–a spell powerful enough to defeat death itself.

Book excerpt: Within these pages lives a story of love, of friendships, and of families, which are imbedded within a place and time, where the most diametrically opposite of human values existed and survived side-by-side, where heaven and hell daily rubbed their social elbows, and each of their elements were ever threatening the survival of their counterpart. Here is a story of people caught between the gears and wheels of their god's invisible machinery that daily drives their universe. Here is portrayed both the physical and psychological landscape of a time whose structures, writings, and beliefs have now been systematically destroyed by a new foreign master and a new foreign religion, which has a so-called "Modern Strategy" about blood sacrifice and intellectual domination. Here is the story of lovers, whose powerful desire to be forever together, is the magic that guides them through an ever-fluxing nightmare that is their reality. The story opens in the capitol city of the Aztec Empire during the night of November the 8th in the year 1516 CE.
