Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National bestseller An ALA Notable Book Three-term poet laureate Joy Harjo offers a vivid, lyrical, and inspiring call for love and justice in this contemplation of her trailblazing life. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. A musical, kaleidoscopic, and wise follow-up to Crazy Brave, Poet Warrior reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. Harjo listens to stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, and the messengers of a changing earth—owls heralding grief, resilient desert plants, and a smooth green snake curled up in surprise. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member. Moving fluidly between prose, song, and poetry, Harjo recounts a luminous journey of becoming, a spiritual map that will help us all find home. Poet Warrior sings with the jazz, blues, tenderness, and bravery that we know as distinctly Joy Harjo.

Book excerpt: As long as humankind has recorded the written word, the warrior has been admired as the embodiment of some of the best aspects of human beings. They have demanded and demonstrated the great qualities and possibilities of moral human action such as courage, loyalty, determination and intelligence. Writers of all kinds and natures have recorded the deeds of these great warriors as models of manly behavior and chivalrous ideals. The great names of history are the names of fighters and warriors. These great warriors lived on the knife edge between life and death, and their pending mortality acted to reveal eternal truths about human life through both their motives and acts. Thus the warrior perspective is universally unique and therefore still applicable today in our more complex modern world. Warrior Wisdom includes a huge collection of unforgettable quotes, sayings and writings from warriors and warrior leaders, both past and present, and from around the world. This exhaustive book reveals the essentialities of the Fighter's life, speaking with great heart, eloquence, wisdom and an earned authenticity on subjects still crucial to you today: leadership, loyalty, honor, courage, tactics, strategy and much more. Read what warriors - Western and Eastern, obscure and famous, admirable and despicable - have said about themselves and others. Be inspired by the words of such important figures from Alexander the Great to General George Patton. Benefit from the pithy strategic wisdoms of Xenophon, Miyamoto Musahi, Sun Tzu and Napoleon Bonaparte. Enjoy the wit of Winston Churchill, and the philosophical and spiritual musings of Marcus Aurelius and King David. Warrior Wisdom offers a unique opportunity to thoroughly explore what it really means to be a warrior...in the worlds of yesterday and today.

Book excerpt: One brave feline, exiled from her clan, must fight to survive in this PEN Award–winning author’s epic fantasy adventure about a tribe of prehistoric cats. Twenty-five million years in the past, a clan of sentient, prehistoric big cats called “the Named” have their own language, traditions, and law. Led by Meoran, the Named herd horses and deer for food. They keep order and peace, fending off predatory raiders—the UnNamed—from all sides. But, the battle has taken its toll, and the Named are skirting the edge of survival. Much to the displeasure of Meoran, a young female named Ratha discovers a powerful defense against the UnNamed. She calls it “the Red Tongue,” and it is a creature of incredible power. Red Tongue is fire, a force of both life and destruction that must be at once nurtured and tamed. Sensing that Ratha’s mastery of fire threatens his power, Meoran banishes her from the clan. As she travels out amongst the savage UnNamed, Ratha learns about both them and herself. But, her tribe needs her. Can she return? Will the Named survive constant attacks without the Red Tongue? Will the power of the Red Tongue change the clan forever? Acclaimed author Clare Bell crafts a serious coming-of-age story filled with adventure, triumph, and heartbreak. Perfect for readers of Jean M. Auel’s The Clan of the Cave Bear, Ratha’s Creature will have readers hooked and clamoring for more stories of these big, noble cats.

Book excerpt: Why would a former Green Beret set out to write a motivational book on the Warrior Lifestyle? What could I possibly have to say that has not been said a million times before? Possibly nothing new. Perhaps even hopefully nothing new. After all, those things that are "new," frequently turn out to be new to our time only. In the past, however, the ideas have already been presented and left wanting from lack of application. My hope is not necessarily to write something new, if by that I mean ideas that nobody has ever heard of before. My goal is to present old truths from a new perspective. You see, many books have been written about motivating yourself, fulfilling your dream, living up to your potential, and so on. Many more are being published every week. It seems, however, that most of these books are by wealthy, prestigious, famous people or by someone who is connected to those criteria. The exception to this rule is the underdog, who fought and clawed his or her way to overcome adversity and lived to tell about it. It's easy to put the formula and work in order when you are financially comfortable. Les Brown said, "Money is not important, but it's right up there with oxygen!"What about the books written for the normal people? The people with no prestige? The outcasts, the workers behind the scenes, the people with no wealth or resources to ponder the deeper things in life because they're to busy working to survive? In my experience as a disabled vet, college student-athlete, husband, and father of 7, there are not many books or podcasts by those criteria.I have read many books encouraging people to grow and develop, and I have been very blessed by some of the authors. But I always feel inadequate. If only I spent more time in prayer. If only I meditated more. If only I read more books. If only I could go to more workshops... If only...I have a job outside of what is considered "full-time motivational speaking," although, as I will explain, really we are all full-time motivators. I have a family to attend to. I have other things that vie for my time and attention. That is not to say that those in paid positions to motivate and inspire don't have those things, but part of their job is to study strategies, spend time in writing and developing new ways to inspire and reach people, and so on. I don't have that luxury. Before anyone accuses me of thinking that paid motivators are without problems, I know that is not true. There are administrative tasks to think of, speaking engagements, book deadlines to meet, and things to learn to stay relevant. I am not saying that paid motivator positions are easy; I am just saying that it seems that being inspired and living up to your potential is more natural in an environment where your job is solely to motivate and get paid for it.But as I read books by motivational speakers, athletes, and entertainers, I cannot help but feel inadequate or confused. After all, the main examples we see of people really chasing their dreams are celebrities reinventing themselves or athletes re-signing to a different team for a bigger pay off. Is it possible to live a complete warrior lifestyle as a "normal" person with a "normal" job? I say yes. This Dose of Inspiration is an attempt by a "normal" guy (although my family and friends might question that) to share my thoughts and experiences of what it means to dream big, set goals, and achieve them while still facing the realities of life.

Book excerpt: Quotes, maxims, short stories to provoke thought and give tired warrior's purpose and direction. The author is the founder of the website Spotterup.com. Spotter Up has 35+ writers who are accomplished former or active duty members of the Special Operations community (Green Berets, Navy SEALS, Rangers, Marine Scout Snipers, S.W.A.T, etc.), master-level shooters, special agents, case officers, athletes, and outdoor enthusiasts who like to share their knowledge with anyone interested in learning more about subjects such as fitness, nutrition, shooting, martial arts, mindset, survival, and far more. The writers of Spotter Up have completed nearly 900+ gear reviews on subjects such as: footwear, body, tactical clothing, armor, optics, and firearms and is known as a credible site for its opinions by the tactical industry. Spotter Up is about "spotting" a problem and coming up with solutions.Spotter Up promotes the idea of the classical "whole" man found in ancient texts. For our modern day he is a person who aspires to be the GUNFIGHTER, WRITER, WILDMAN, MONK: Man of Action, Man of Intellect, Man of Emotion, Man of Spirit. Consider the Athenian ideal of a balanced education from the book Greek Realities: Life and Thought in Ancient Greece, By Finley Hooper "They could play some flute but should not neglect wrestling. They avoided the excesses of life. They might focus on music or philosophy but spent enough time so that their bodies did not become soft."Spotter Up is for anyone, whether they are military, law-enforcement, emergency response or not, that is searching for ways to become more well-rounded.We Fight Monsters is a collection of quotes, maxims, poems and more written and posted by the author originally on Instagram, over a four-year period of time, as a way to provoke thought, and simultaneously inspire men and women. The author of We Fight Monsters hopes it helps readers transcend the ordinary world by relishing the unexpected. The book was written because many of the followers of Spotter Up's social media sites stated, "the writing got me through some very hard times."The cover illustration is based off the Greek Hydra and the Hercules myth. Man has an internal struggle after he's battled a beast, and sometimes he must battle the beast within himself. He isn't a demigod. He's just a regular Joe who is a hero to many, that lives to win against evil. Maybe he's a Marine who did several deployments and lost some friends, maybe she's a cop fighting crime on the streets. The illustration symbolizes the brotherhood of man, (men and women), that fight the good fight despite experiencing PTSD, physical injuries, loss of friends, lovers etc."WE FIGHT MONSTERS. I'm not afraid of anything in this world that's been seen. I have scars on the inside. My badges of honor. There's a light inside my heart; it's for others to see. I live to show the way to those lost and in pain. And you? Walk with magnificence. Cock of the walk. Lead the way or follow those who use their pain to fight monsters and the injustices in this world" ~Michael Kurcina.
