Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the dynamics of warped/flux II B string compactifications and aspects of their phenomenology are studied. We carry out a systematic study of linearized perturbations about these backgrounds. This allows us to obtain flux induced moduli masses incorporating the effects of warping. We also present a potential for the four dimensional dynamics of these vacua in terms of ten dimensional quantities which can be used to study various aspects of their physics. We provide a necessary criterion, "slope-dominance," for evading "no-go" results for de Sitter vacua. We study the dynamics of mobile branes, relevant for models of inflation in string theory. We show that potentials for mobile branes receive generic contributions inhibiting slow-roll inflation. We examine supersymmetry breaking when the visible sector resides in a strongly warped throat. We formulate the conditions required for the existence of a description in terms of a 4D SUGRA formulation, or in terms of 4D SUGRA together with soft-breaking terms for such scenarios.

Book excerpt: Warped string compactifications, characterized by the nonsingular behavior of the metric in the infrared (IR), feature departures from the usual anti?de Sitter warped extra dimensions. We study the implications of the smooth IR cutoff for Randall-Sundrum- (RS- )type models. We find that the phenomenology of the Kaluza-Klein gravitons (including their masses and couplings) depends sensitively on the precise shape of the warp factor in the IR. In particular, we analyze the warped deformed conifold, find that the spectrum differs significantly from that of RS, and present a simple prescription (a mass-gap ansatz) that can be used to study the phenomenology of IR modifications to 5D warped extra dimensions.

Book excerpt: This thesis is devoted to a study of certain examples of gauge/string duality related to warped throat backgrounds in string theory. Namely, we consider a family of IIB SUGRA solutions dual to a moduli space of certain cascading N = 1 gauge theory. This theory exhibits rich low-energy behavior, including chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The first part of this thesis is focused on the gravity dual description of these phenomena. In particular, we discuss string theory description of the continuous gauge theory moduli space, evaluate the tension of BPS domain wall, and calculate baryonic condensates. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the embedding of the warped throat backgrounds into flux compactifications. To this end we calculate the nonperturbative superpotential of the D3-D7 system on warped conic geometries. This superpotential plays an important role in fixing Kahler moduli and is an important ingredient in constructing consistent compactification scenarios. In the last part of the thesis we apply this superpotential to a particular cosmological inflation scenario based on the dynamics of a D3-brane moving along the throat. We conclude that the realization of stringy inflation within this scenario is possible only around an inflection point of the potential and requires a fine tuning of the parameters.

At the same time string theory has begun to play an increasingly important role in particle physics as a possible framework for building unified models of particle interaction including gravity. In recent years we have seen an increasing overlap between cosmology and string theory and currently the area of string cosmology is one of the most active fields of research. PASCOS 2005 aimed to provide coherent discussions of recent developments on the interface of the three disciplines and also on their interconnections. In particular, superstring aspects in low energy particle theory (SUSY) and cosmological applications (moduli stabilization) are extensively covered in this volume. Topics include dark matter and dark energy, baryogenesis, flavor and CP violation, neutrino physics, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, flux compactification, string model building, as well as brane cosmology.
