Book Synopsis Making the March King by : Patrick Warfield
Download or read book Making the March King written by Patrick Warfield and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Philip Sousa's mature career as the indomitable leader of his own touring band is well known, but the years leading up to his emergence as a celebrity have escaped serious attention. In this revealing biography, Patrick Warfield explains how the March King came to be by documenting Sousa's early life and career. Covering the period 1854 to 1893, this study focuses on the community and training that created Sousa, exploring the musical life of late nineteenth-century Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia as a context for Sousa's development. Warfield examines Sousa's wide-ranging experience composing, conducting, and performing in the theater, opera house, concert hall, and salons, as well as his leadership of the United States Marine Band and the later Sousa Band, early twentieth-century America's most famous and successful ensemble. Sousa composed not only marches during this period but also parlor, minstrel, and art songs; parade, concert, and medley marches; schottisches, waltzes, and polkas; and incidental music, operettas, and descriptive pieces. Warfield's examination of Sousa's output reveals a versatile composer much broader in stylistic range than the bandmaster extraordinaire remembered as the March King. In particular, Making the March King demonstrates how Sousa used his theatrical training to create the character of the March King. The exuberant bandmaster who pleased audiences was both a skilled and charismatic conductor and a theatrical character whose past and very identity suggested drama, spectacle, and excitement. Sousa's success was also the result of perseverance and lessons learned from older colleagues on how to court, win, and keep an audience. Warfield presents the story of Sousa as a self-made business success, a gifted performer and composer who deftly capitalized on his talents to create one of the most entertaining, enduring figures in American music.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Jefferson Davis by : Jefferson Davis
Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being powerless to direct the current, I can only wait to see whither it runs," wrote Jefferson Davis to his wife, Varina, on October 11, 1865, five months after the victorious United States Army took him prisoner. Indeed, in the tumultuous years immediately after the Civil War, Davis found himself more acted upon than active, a dramatic change from his previous twenty years of public service to the United States as a major political figure and then to the Confederacy as its president and commander in chief. Volume 12 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis follows the former president of the Confederacy as he and his family fight to find their place in the world after the Civil War. A federal prisoner, incarcerated in a "living tomb" at Fort Monroe while the government decided whether, where, and by whom he should be tried for treason, Davis was initially allowed to correspond only with his wife and counsel. Released from prison after two hard years, he was not free from legal proceedings until 1869. Stateless, homeless, and without means to support himself and his young family, Davis lived in Canada and then Europe, searching for a new career in a congenial atmosphere. Finally, in November 1869, he settled in Memphis as president of a life insurance company and, for the first time in four years, had the means to build a new life.Throughout this difficult period, Varina Howell Davis demonstrated strength and courage, especially when her husband was in prison. She fought tirelessly for his release and to ensure their children's education and safety. Their letters clearly demonstrate the Davises' love and their dependence on each other. They both worried over the fate of the South and of family members and friends who had suffered during the war. Though disfranchised, Davis remained careful but not totally silent on the subject of politics. Even while in prison, he wrote without regret of his decision to follow Mississippi out of the Union and of his unswerving belief in the constitutionality of state rights and secession. Likewise, he praised all who supported the Confederacy with their blood and who, like himself, had lost everything.

Book Synopsis The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox by : BA Bosserman
Download or read book The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox written by BA Bosserman and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Trinity and the Vindication of Christian Paradox' grapples with the question of how one may hold together the ideals of systematic theology, apologetic proof, and theological paradox by building on the insights of Cornelius Van Til. Van Til developed an apologetic where one presupposes that the Triune God exists, and then proves this Christian presupposition by demonstrating that philosophies that deny it are self-defeating in the specific sense that they rely on principles that only the Trinity, asthe ultimate harmony of unity and diversity, can furnish. A question raised by Van Til's trademark procedure is how he can evade the charge that the apparent contradictions of the christian faith render it equally self-defeating as non-Christian alternatives. This text argues that for Van Til, Christian paradoxes can be differentiated from genuine contradictions by the way that their apparently opposing elements discernibly require one another, even as they present our minds with an irresolvable conflict. And yet, Van Til failed to sufficiently vindicate the central Christian paradox-the doctrine of the Trinity-along the lines required by his system. Hence, the present text offers a unique proof that God can only exist as the pinnacle of unity-in-diversity, and as the ground of a coherent Christian system, if He exists as three, and only three, divine persons.
Download or read book Trust Fund written by Stephen Frey and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2001-01-18 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Takeover and The Insider comes a riveting new novel pitting brother against brother and putting personal honor to the ultimate test--in the world of high finance and boundless ambition among power brokers from Wall Street to Washington. A scion of wealth and privilege, Bo Hancock is the youngest son of Connecticut's most influential clan--and the financial genius at Warfield Capital, the multibillion dollar investment firm at the heart of the family dynasty. He is also stranded in the shadow of his charismatic brothers, Teddy and Paul, and starved for the approval of their domineering father. While his brothers enjoy the spotlight, Bo can be counted on to "clean up" when anything threatens to tarnish the sterling Hancock name. Sixteen years ago, Bo covered up a monstrous crime involving Paul and a call girl. Now Paul is on the fast track to the White House--and Bo has become a liability, thanks to his weakness for alcohol and for women other than his wife. Stripped of his position and exiled to the backwoods of Montana--away from temptation and the public eye--Bo thinks his life has hit rock bottom. But a deathbed reconciliation with his father brings him home and reinstalls him at Warfield Capital, sparking a rapid-fire chain of events that could destroy the family and its vast fortune. First Warfield is left vulnerable to every Wall Street shark out to make a killing. Then a sudden rash of real killings forces Bo to confront the specter of a sinister conspiracy--and brings him face to face with one shocking truth after another, shattering the world and the family he thought he knew . . . leaving him utterly alone and running for his life. Trust Fund moves at hyperspeed from the canyons of Wall Street to the corridors of Congress to private sanctums of inherited wealth and power. It is the tale of a great American political and financial dynasty wrenched apart by its own fierce ambition--and by one son's determination to forge his own destiny on his own terms.
