Download or read book Natural Products written by Dieter Sicker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by experienced authors, this book presents numerous natural everyday products with a high range of structural diversity. Twenty natural products have been arranged in five sections, describing three alkaloids, five colored compounds, three carbohydrates and glycosides, seven terpenoids, and two aromatic compounds. Adopting a highly didactical approach, each chapter features a uniform structure: Background, in-depth information about isolation processes and structural characterization as well as a Q&A section at the end. Alongside the theoretical information many practical hints for the laboratory work are also included. A comprehensive overview of UV-, IR- and NMR-spectroscopy as well as mass-spectrometry for every exemplified compound is provided and the understanding of these methods is supported by concluding questions and exercises. Educating and entertaining, this full-color textbook turns the learning process into a real pleasure, not only for students in natural products chemistry but also experienced professionals.
Download or read book The Toxic Museum written by Helene Tello and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toxic Museum examines the use of pesticides in German museum collections at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It reconstructs the research of substances against harmful insects in museum collections within the historical context of the formation of nation-states, colonialism, a strengthening chemical industry, the First World War, and the resulting broad-based hygiene movement through the lens of the Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) in Berlin. Because of their persistence, the consequences of the use of pesticides in museum collections are now unmistakable and well documented in many places. Numerous objects are highly contaminated and are only accessible under difficult conditions regarding occupational health and safety. This creates obstacles for conservation and scientific processing, as well as for mediation in the context of exhibitions and external loans. The most precarious and difficult situations arise when contaminated museum objects are repatriated to their countries of origin. This monograph examines contemporary challenges in the 21st century museum landscape and contextualises the history of pesticide use at the turn of the 20th century. The Toxic Museum will be of great interest to students and scholars working in conservation, museology, monument preservation, art and cultural studies, ethnology, history, and economics.
Download or read book Cultural Techniques written by Jörg Dünne and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the preliminary results of the work carried out by the interdisciplinary cultural techniques research lab at the University of Erfurt. Taking up an impulse from media studies, its contributions examine —from a variety of disciplinary perspectives—the interplay between the formative processes of knowledge and action outlined within the conceptual framework of cultural techniques. Case studies in the fields of history, literary (and media) studies, and the history of science reconstruct seemingly fundamental demarcations such as nature and culture, the human and the nonhuman, and materiality and the symbolical order as the result of concrete practices and operations. These studies reveal that particularly basic operations of spatialization form the very conditions that determine emergence within any cultural order. Ranging from manual and philological "paper work" to practices of opening up and closing off spaces and collective techniques of assembly, these case studies replace the grand narratives of cultural history focusing on micrological examinations of specific constellations between human and nonhuman actors.
