Book excerpt: Inaugurated in 1877 as a camp meeting ground by eastern Massachusetts residents who believed in communication with the dead, Onset quickly emerged as the nation's leading spiritualist summer community. By 1900, however, spiritualism had been overwhelmed by an influx of tourists, and Onset subsequently developed as a secular summer resort noted for its scenic bluffs, recreational pursuits, and beaches. At this same time, neighboring Point Independence found wide appeal among middle-class vacationers interested in swimming, sailing, and relaxation.

Book excerpt: Wareham nestles along the coast of picturesque Buzzards Bay in southeastern Massachusetts. First visited by Native Americans who made it their summer home, the villages of Wareham and Onset were incorporated as the town of Wareham in 1739. The town's long and varied history includes the development of the salt, iron, shipping, and cranberry industries and the decades of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when the town provided an exciting resort destination. Many ethnic groups made Wareham their home, including the Cape Verdeans, who contributed to the development of the cranberry industry and brought the richness of their culture to the community. Wareham spans the years from the eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century and includes images of important buildings, many of which no longer exist. The book depicts the numerous early villages for their unique flavor: Tremont, Parker Mills, Lincoln Hill, and Swifts Beach in Wareham; Agawam Village; and Onset's many beaches and neighborhoods, such as the downtown village, Point Independence, and Wicket's Island. Wareham includes rare photographs of downtown Wareham, the Horseshoe Mill, and the Tremont Nail Company, as well as Onset's Victorian casinos and hotels that recall bygone days of seaside splendor.

Download or read book Spiritualist Onset written by Michael J. Maddigan and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1877 Victorian-era Spiritualists who believed in communication with the dead held a camp meeting on the shores of Onset Bay in Wareham, Massachusetts. The community they founded at Onset soon emerged as one of America's leading centers of Spiritualism. Subsequently buffeted by a series of scandals that exposed several of its mediums as frauds and facing an influx of tourists intent on recreation rather than religious revelation, Onset saw Spiritualist influence collapse after just two decades. Spiritualist Onset: Talking with the Dead by the Sea is a fascinating exploration of this charming Victorian village's unique origins and the rapid rise and controversial decline of Spiritualism in "the Spiritualists' Summer Home by the Sea".
