But the subject is one on which we, as a people, have many lessons to learn. Even in time of peace. For that reason alone the publica tion of the study will be helpful, especially in view of the excel lent treatment of the subject by the author. Professor Carver's treatment is both theoretical and practical and should be useful in helping us to order our public and private affairs so as to secure greater economy. We need your help to stir our people up to buy Liberty Bonds, Thrift Stamps and Hooverize. We know we can depend upon you; because you have never failed us in anything we have asked of you. As there. Is nothing like a song to stir the folks, and as nothing hits the Kaiser and his dirty bunch so hard as a patriotic song, coupled with service and sacrifice, we dedicate to you The New Yankee Doodle, and these other patriotic songs to sing in season and out of season, to help in making the world safe for Democracy. The price you pay to own this book goes to buy Thrift and War Savings Stamps, to be donated to the cause of God and Country, as the author and those who may sell the books shall decide. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Purse of Indiana: The Five Liberty Loans and War Savings and Thrift Campaigns in Indiana During the World War This is the second volume of the series "Indiana In The World War," published by the Indiana Historical Commission. In this volume will be found a comprehensive study of the organizations and groups of individuals in Indiana that helped in the work of financing the World War. As a student of financial problems, and as a writer on financial and economic subjects, Mr. Greenough is well qualified to discuss the issues that developed in connection with the Liberty Loan drives and the War Savings campaigns. He served throughout the war as Director of Publicity in the State Liberty Loan Headquarters in Indianapolis. In this position he had opportunity to keep in direct touch with the workings of the Liberty Loan organizations. Also he was in position to make a careful survey of the numerous problems that confronted the Liberty Loan committees, and to study the development of that war spirit that dominated the lives of Indianans during those two epoch-making years in our state history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bug's-Eye View of the War The writer of this rather botchy yarn had a grandfather who served in the Civil War. It was the custom of the old gentleman to relate, with some show of pride, incidents of that conflict in which he usually figured as a principal. So breathless was his recital of heroism that it nearly landed him in Congress at one time, although certain of his political opponents circulated a report at the time of his candidacy that grandpa broke his shin on the way to the concentration camp and never shouldered anything more murderous than a borrowed umbrella. While these base insinuations never prevailed against the old boy's sterling reputation in the community, how idle would they have been had he kept a diary and had it printed and passed around! Lest it be forgotten, here is your record, set up in imperishable type - alms for oblivion. Changing points of view and lack of contemporaneous records have made it imperfect in many ways; but Memory has been a friend. I aim to suggest, rather than narrate, and perhaps the incidents that have been omitted will be recalled by their associations in these pages. It is called a bug's-eye view of the war because in reality that was our viewpoint. Food and sleep and work were our chief concerns, Mr. Wilson's speeches to the contrary, notwithstanding. If at any time we were crusaders, our objective was a ration dump; and nearly all of us felt that our obligations to Old Man La Fayette were discharged along with our food on the transport going over. Communiques and the progress of war loans seldom excited our interest, if at all. This is not an indictment of our patriotism, for we decided upon the purposes of the war long before we enlisted. No attempt, therefore, has been made to tell the story of the war. Only when it has been necessary has reference to it been made at all. This is only a simple tale of the smiles and tears and schoolboy scraps the bloomin' war occasioned in a little group of men banded together for its duration. Histories of what the millions did are already on sale, and reference to the war's larger events would be tiresome repetition here. The author undertook the preparation of a suitable text for use in the Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth, and published a portion of The Rifle in War. This first edition was prepared under a considerable stress of other work and while very incomplete and fragmentary served its purpose as a basis for his conferences on this subject with the students of the several schools. The need for a more permanent and complete presentation of the subject, however, led to a revision and completion of the Origi nal edition and although the author's work as an instructor in two departments interfered with the proper preparation of the text of the revision to a very considerable extent, it was at last accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Trail of the War These pages are nothing more than they profess to be - the story of ordinary incidents in an extraordinary state of things; recollections of the Trail of the War, not of the front. Hasty work is generally the weakest plea that can be urged for lenient criticism but perhaps in this case the circumstances are somewhat exceptional. At least, if the thing were to be done at all, 'twere well 'twere done quickly. This narrative being original from first to last, the writer, in justice to himself and his readers, volunteers the assurance, that any incident or occasional expression of opinion they may fancy they recognize, has been borrowed only from communications of his own that have appeared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Four Weeks of the War But for the cultivation of a fancy, this volume would not go to the public. The collection of material for this work began shortly after the close of the War, by seeking from both North and South, files of daily and weekly papers published during the activity of the two great armies of the Union and Confederate forces. Many difficulties were encountered in collecting files now in my possession, yet, after the lapse of more than a quarter of a century, the result of my collection is in valuable and cannot be duplicated. Having a desire, after having served in the field at a youthful age, to know more than I chanced to have seen, caused me to seek this channel for that I deemed more accurate and interesting than could come from the pen of a historian, and to you is given the situation and expression on both Union and Confederate sides, to study over as I have done with great pleasure. I do not offer an apology for any article within this cover. I have given each as it came directly from the press sentiment on those dates. It has been found necessary at times to have concentrated letters and editorials, but the gist of each is retained and here given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Undertones of War I know that it is very local, limited, incoherent; that it is almost useless, in the sense that no one will read it who is not already aware of all the intimations and discoveries in it, and many more, by reason of having gone the same journey. No one? Some, I am sure; but not many. Neither will they understand that will not be all my fault. I know that memory has her little ways, and by now she has concealed precisely that look, that word, that coincidence of nature without and nature within which I long to remember. Within the space of even one year, this divinity seems to me to take a perverse pleasure in playing with her votaries. Our patriotic young men, in the morning of life, selected because of their personal prowess and patriotic devotion, going to the front to find perhaps a soldier's grave or a sailor's rest in the grim old ocean or to return broken and maimed to carry the red badge of sacrifice throughout their remaining years. This typifies the highest level of patriotism, the highest plane of devotion to one's country. The country calls upon the treasures of youth - which are strength, courage, brain and brawn - and calls upon the equally important treasures of thrift, the accumulation of labor and adventure. We are to consider the less heroic but none the less import ant financial aspect of the war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and the Weird Do you think there is anything In it. 9 He was a clean - set six -foot specimen of English manhood, an officer Of the R. F. A. Wounded at Mons, who spoke. I mean I haven't studied these subjects much - in fact, I haven't studied them at all. Sport is more in my line than spiritualism and that kind Of thing, but when you have experiences brought under your very nose again and again, you cannot help thinking there must be something in such things. He had just told me that in the last few minutes' sleep he managed to get on the march to Mons he dreamt that he was unable to sit his horse. The next day he was wounded inside his right knee, not seriously, but sufficient to stop him riding for a week or two. I should never have thought anything more of it - I mean, connecting the dream with the ill-luck - but in the South African campaign there were quite remarkable instances. You see, at such times when you are playing hide-and12 the uncanny 'under fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
