Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morgan Philips Price, the author of this valuable eye-witness account of the Great War and the early Russian Revolution as seen from the vast territories of the Caucasus in central Asia was a British left-wing journalist. A pacifist on the outbreak of war in 1914 he was recruited by the liberal 'Manchester Guardian' as a Russian-speaker to cover the war on the Eastern Front. The first part of the book describes Russian reverses and the chaotic state of the Tsar's war effort. Shocked by the chaos ( and unable to report if because of military censorship) Philips Price retreated to the Caucasus where he organised relief work for refugees. On the outbreak of the Russian revolution in 1917 he saw - with sympathy - the emergence of workers, soldiers and peasants' Soviets which he hoped would overturn what he called the 'medieval barbarism' of the Tsar and usher in a new era of peace and progress. He was not to know that he was seeing the birth of a new barbarism far worse than the old. Philips returned home, became a long-term Labour MP, and died in 1973.

Book Synopsis The Central Asian Revolt of 1916 by : Alexander Morrison
Download or read book The Central Asian Revolt of 1916 written by Alexander Morrison and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1916 Revolt was a key event in the history of Central Asia, and of the Russian Empire in the First World War. This volume is the first comprehensive re-assessment of its causes, course and consequences in English for over sixty years. It draws together a new generation of leading historians from North America, Japan, Europe, Russia and Central Asia, working with Russian archival sources, oral narratives, poetry and song in Kazakh and Kyrgyz. These illuminate in unprecedented detail the origins and causes of the revolt, and the immense human suffering which it entailed. They also situate the revolt in a global perspective as part of a chain of rebellions and disturbances that shook the world’s empires, as they crumbled under the pressures of total war.
Book Synopsis Russia's Great War and Revolution in the Far East by : David Wolff
Download or read book Russia's Great War and Revolution in the Far East written by David Wolff and published by Slavica Publishers. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features new research on the critical effects of World War I and the Russian Revolution and Civil War in Northeast Asia, a broad region that has historically included the Russian Far East, Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan. Drawing together noted international specialists, the chapters break new ground, bringing unused or understudied sources into the historical record and posing new questions about the causes, consequences, and dynamics of the war and revolutionary upheavals in the region. More than anything, the volume makes clear that our familiar habit of approaching Russia's Great War and Revolution from a predominantly European angle needs to be reconsidered. These titanic events convulsed the entire empire, including Russia's faraway world on the Pacific, reshaping Northeast Asia towards its central involvement in the twentieth century's bloodiest wars. The Northeast Asian theater was not peripheral to the developments of the era but rather an integral part of an unavoidably international and transnational history of conflict, destruction, and transformation. The essays in "Russia's Great War and Revolution in the Far East" help us appreciate a number of the lesser-known complexities of this story, offering scholars valuable newperspectives in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part diary, part journalistic dispatches this volume, originally published in 1918 is a short history of the Caucasus campaign and connects the events that were taking place in the Middle East with the past history of Central Asia. Witnessing the effects of the Russian Revolution on the Asiatic provinces, the author reveals the real state of Asiatic Russia, in the months preceding the Russian Revolution and shows how the Russian reaction was in part responsible for the disastrous state of affairs in Armenia and was contributing with the Turkish Government to bring that country to the verge of ruin.
Book Synopsis The Boundaries of Europe by : Pietro Rossi
Download or read book The Boundaries of Europe written by Pietro Rossi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe’s boundaries have mainly been shaped by cultural, religious, and political conceptions rather than by geography. This volume of bilingual essays from renowned European scholars outlines the transformation of Europe’s boundaries from the fall of the ancient world to the age of decolonization, or the end of the explicit endeavor to “Europeanize” the world. From the decline of the Roman Empire to the polycentrism of today’s world, the essays span such aspects as the confrontation of Christian Europe with Islam and the changing role of the Mediterranean from “mare nostrum” to a frontier between nations. Scandinavia, eastern Europe and the Atlantic are also analyzed as boundaries in the context of exploration, migratory movements, cultural exchanges, and war. The Boundaries of Europe, edited by Pietro Rossi, is the first installment in the ALLEA book series Discourses on Intellectual Europe, which seeks to explore the question of an intrinsic or quintessential European identity in light of the rising skepticism towards Europe as an integrated cultural and intellectual region.
Download or read book Stalin written by Ronald Grigor Suny and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This biography of the young Stalin is more than the story of how a revolutionary was made: it is the first serious investigation, using the full range of Russian and Georgian archives, to explain Stalin's evolution from a romantic and idealistic youth into a hardened political operative. Suny takes seriously the first half of Stalin's life: his intellectual development, his views on issue of nationalities and nationalism, and his role in the Social Democratic debates of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book narrates an almost tragic downfall; we see Stalin transform from a poor provincial seminarian, who wrote romantic nationalist poetry, into a fearsome and brutal ruler. Many biographers of Stalin turn to shallow psychological analysis in seeking to explain his embrace of revolution, focusing on the beatings he suffered at the hands of his father or his hero-worship of Lenins, or sensationalizing Stalin's involvement in violent activity. Suny seeks to show Stalin in the complex context of the oppressive tsarist police-state in which he lived and debates and party politics that animated the revolutionary circles in which he moved. Though working from fragmentary evidence from disparate sources, Suny is able to place Stalin in his intellectual and political context and reveal, not only a different analysis of the man's psychological and intellectual transformation, but a revisionist history of the revolutionary movements themselves before 1917"--
Book Synopsis Republicanism, Communism, Islam by : John T. Sidel
Download or read book Republicanism, Communism, Islam written by John T. Sidel and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Republicanism, Communism, Islam, John T. Sidel provides an alternate vantage point for understanding the variegated forms and trajectories of revolution across the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam, a perspective that is de-nationalized, internationalized, and transnationalized. Sidel positions this new vantage point against the conventional framing of revolutions in modern Southeast Asian history in terms of a nationalist template, on the one hand, and distinctive local cultures and forms of consciousness, on the other. Sidel's comparative analysis shows how—in very different, decisive, and often surprising ways—the Philippine, Indonesian, and Vietnamese revolutions were informed, enabled, and impelled by diverse cosmopolitan connections and international conjunctures. Sidel addresses the role of Freemasonry in the making of the Philippine revolution, the importance of Communism and Islam in Indonesia's Revolusi, and the influence that shifting political currents in China and anticolonial movements in Africa had on Vietnamese revolutionaries. Through this assessment, Republicanism, Communism, and Islam tracks how these forces, rather than nationalism per se, shaped the forms of these revolutions, the ways in which they unfolded, and the legacies which they left in their wakes.
Book Synopsis The Baron's Cloak by : Willard Sunderland
Download or read book The Baron's Cloak written by Willard Sunderland and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baron Roman Fedorovich von Ungern-Sternberg (1885–1921) was a Baltic German aristocrat and tsarist military officer who fought against the Bolsheviks in Eastern Siberia during the Russian Civil War. From there he established himself as the de facto warlord of Outer Mongolia, the base for a fantastical plan to restore the Russian and Chinese empires, which then ended with his capture and execution by the Red Army as the war drew to a close. In The Baron’s Cloak, Willard Sunderland tells the epic story of the Russian Empire’s final decades through the arc of the Baron’s life, which spanned the vast reaches of Eurasia. Tracking Ungern’s movements, he transits through the Empire’s multinational borderlands, where the country bumped up against three other doomed empires, the Habsburg, Ottoman, and Qing, and where the violence unleashed by war, revolution, and imperial collapse was particularly vicious. In compulsively readable prose that draws on wide-ranging research in multiple languages, Sunderland re-creates Ungern’s far-flung life and uses it to tell a compelling and original tale of imperial success and failure in a momentous time. Sunderland visited the many sites that shaped Ungern’s experience, from Austria and Estonia to Mongolia and China, and these travels help give the book its arresting geographical feel. In the early chapters, where direct evidence of Ungern’s activities is sparse, he evokes peoples and places as Ungern would have experienced them, carefully tracing the accumulation of influences that ultimately came together to propel the better documented, more notorious phase of his career. Recurring throughout Sunderland’s magisterial account is a specific artifact: the Baron’s cloak, an essential part of the cross-cultural uniform Ungern chose for himself by the time of his Mongolian campaign: an orangey-gold Mongolian kaftan embroidered in the Khalkha fashion yet outfitted with tsarist-style epaulettes on the shoulders. Like his cloak, Ungern was an imperial product. He lived across the Russian Empire, combined its contrasting cultures, fought its wars, and was molded by its greatest institutions and most volatile frontiers. By the time of his trial and execution mere months before the decree that created the USSR, he had become a profoundly contradictory figure, reflecting both the empire’s potential as a multinational society and its ultimately irresolvable limitations.

Book Synopsis The Revolt of 1916 in Russian Central Asia by : Edward Dennis Sokol
Download or read book The Revolt of 1916 in Russian Central Asia written by Edward Dennis Sokol and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic study of resistance to Tsarist Russian colonialism, the genocide that followed, and its connection to the Bolshevik Revolution. In 1916, Tzar Nicholas II began drafting Russian subjects across Central Asia to fight in World War I. By summer, the widespread resistance of Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tajiks, Turkmen, and Uzbeks turned into an outright revolt. The Russian Imperial Army killed approximately 270,000 of these people, while tens of thousands more died in their attempt to escape into China. Suppressed during the Soviet Era and nearly lost to history, knowledge of this horrific incident is remembered thanks to Edward Dennis Sokol’s pioneering Revolt of 1916 in Russian Central Asia. This wide-ranging and exhaustively researched book explores the Tsarist policies that led to Russian encroachment against the land and rights of the indigenous Central Asian people. It describes the corruption that permeated Russian colonial rule and argues that the uprising was no mere draft riot, but a revolt against Tsarist colonialism in all its dimensions: economic, political, religious, and national. Sokol’s masterpiece also traces the chain reaction between the uprising, the collapse of Tsarism, and the Bolshevik Revolution.
