Download or read book Dad's War Photos written by Neal Bertrand and published by . This book was released on 2014-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curtis Bertrand was just a country boy in the U.S. Army in World War II. While in the South Pacific Theater he took 600 pictures to allow his folks back home on the farm to be eyewitnesses of what he was experiencing. He had no intention of being a photojournalist, but this pictorial provides a unique view of life and death during WWII. He never dreamed his private stash of pictures would be viewed over 70 years later. The author traces his father's steps from home to war and back using the war photos and official battalion diary which reveal some heartbreaking accounts and fearful experiences.INSIDE THIS BOOK YOU WILL WITNESS: New Guinea Battle Campaigns: From Australia to Dobodura and Saidor; The Battle for Biak Island and Capture of Mokmer Airdrome; The Philippine Islands: the Battle of Manila and its Reconstruction;World War II Airplanes with Erotic Nose Art;New Guinea Natives in Daily LifePRAISE FOR "DAD'S WAR PHOTOS"This book will bring back many memories for those veterans who are still with us, but perhaps more importantly it will allow the younger generations, especially those whose forefathers served in the Pacific, to see and understand more about the war that encompassed the world.Ray BowdenDorset, England I've never seen a book that covers so much of the war in a pictorial form. It presents a month-by-month account of what it was like to serve in an engineering battalion in support of the fighting troops in the South Pacific.Hughes GlantzbergI thoroughly enjoyed this book! Neal has done a great job of organizing the book so any reader can get a real taste of where his dad went and what he saw. I especially enjoyed the World War II nose art photos.Sheila FredricksonThis is a fascinating first person view of an enlisted man's perspective. You witness his part of the war through his eyes and camera lens. This is a part of the war few have documented so thoroughly from such a unique perspective. Fred Leger

Book Synopsis The Fall of Malaya and Singapore by : Jon Diamond
Download or read book The Fall of Malaya and Singapore written by Jon Diamond and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-05-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just 10 weeks from 8 December 1941 to mid February 1942, British and Imperial forces were utterly defeated by the numerically inferior Japanese under General Yamashita. British units fought hard on the Malayan mainland but the Japanese showed greater mobility, cunning and tactical superiority. Morale was badly affected by the loss of HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse to Japanese aircraft on 19 December as they sought out enemy shipping. Panic set in as military and civilians withdrew south to Singapore. Thought to be an impregnable fortress, its defences against land attacks were shockingly deficient. General Percival's leadership was at best uninspired and at worst incompetent. Once the Allied troops withdrew to Singapore it was only a matter of time before surrender became inevitable. To make matters worse reinforcements arrived but only in time to be made POWs. The whole catastrophe is brilliantly described in this highly illustrated book.

Book Synopsis Images of Women in Peace and War by : Sharon Macdonald
Download or read book Images of Women in Peace and War written by Sharon Macdonald and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As warriors, freedom fighters and victims, as mothers, wives and prostitutes, and as creators and members of peace movements, women are inevitably caught up in the net of war. Yet women's participation in warfare and peace campaigns has often been underestimated or ignored. Images of Women in Peace and War explores women's relationships to war, peace, and revolution, from the Amazons, Inka and Boadicea, to women soldiers in South Africa, Mau Mau freedom fighters and the protestors at Greenham Common. The contributors consider not only the reality of women's participation but also look at how their actions have been perceived and represented across cultures and through history. They examine how sexual imagery is constructed, how it is used to delineate women's relation to warfare and how these images have sometimes been subverted in order to challenge the status quo. The book raises important questions about whether women have a special prerogative to promote peace and considers whether the experience of motherhood leads to a distinctive women's position on war. The authors find that their analyses lead them to deal with arguments on the basic nature of the sexes and to reevaluate our concepts of "peace," "war," and "gender."

Book Synopsis Bataan Death March by : Bollich, James
Download or read book Bataan Death March written by Bollich, James and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a brave American veteran comes an eyewitness account of a gruesome chapter in World War II history. Captured when America surrendered the PhilippinesBataan Peninsula, James Bollich experienced first-hand the march that cost more than 8,000 American and Filipino lives. Now, he shares the unforgettable experience of his three and a half years of Japanese imprisonment. This journal relates his personal experience, first focusing on the sixty-five-mile march that deprived prisoners of food, water, and rest. Prisoners received harsh punishments for any infraction, one of the most brutal of these being the policy of beheading them for taking a sip of water. Rather than force him to give up, these things made Bollich fight for life even more. Witnessing his comrades falling beside him and watching his own body waste away to ninety pounds, he never yielded his will to survive. After completing the march, he remained a prisoner of war, first at an old Philippine army base, then in another camp at Mukden, Manchuria. He relates his imprisonment in detail, from starvation and torture to digging their own comrades graves in the hot sun, without hats or water. Through it all, he remained courageous and hopeful that he would one day make it back home. His story reminds both past and present generations of the horror and brutality of the Pacific war, all the while providing an inspiring testament to the will ofthe human spirit.
Book Synopsis Faces of the Civil War by : Ronald S Coddington
Download or read book Faces of the Civil War written by Ronald S Coddington and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archival images and biographical sketches of Union soldiers tell the stories of their lives during and after the Civil War. Before leaving to fight in the Civil War, many Union and Confederate soldiers posed for a carte de visite, or visiting card, to give to their families, friends, or sweethearts. Invented in 1854 by a French photographer, the carte de visite was a small photographic print roughly the size of a modern trading card. The format arrived in America on the eve of the Civil War, fueling intense demand for the keepsakes. Many cards of Civil War soldiers survive today, but the experiences?and often the names?of the individuals portrayed have been lost to time. A passionate collector of Civil War–era photography, Ron Coddington researched the history behind these anonymous faces in military records, pension files, and other public and personal documents. In Faces of the Civil War, Coddington presents 77 cartes de visite of Union soldiers from his collection and tells the stories of their lives during and after the war. These soldiers came from all walks of life. All were volunteers. Their personal stories reveal a tremendous diversity in their experience of war: many served with distinction, some were captured, some never saw combat while others saw little else. The lives of survivors were even more disparate. While some made successful transitions back to civilian life, others suffered permanent physical and mental disabilities, which too often wrecked their families and careers. In compelling words and haunting pictures, Faces of the Civil War offers a unique perspective on the most dramatic and wrenching period in American history.
