Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain has issued medals rewarding war service since at least the early nineteenth century, and increasingly through the period of its imperial expansion prior to 1914, but examples of many of the early types are now scarce. However, few families escaped some involvement with “the Great War” of 1914 18, and many still treasure the medals awarded to their ancestors for wartime service. Today, with a growing interest in British military history and particularly in family history and genealogy, more and more people want to trace their ancestors' past. This book looks in detail at the origin, types and varieties of the British medals awarded for general war service between 1914 and '18, and gives advice on researching the awards and their recipients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author had enlisted in 1901 in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and was a reservist when the First World War broke out. He rejoined his old, 2nd Battalion and landed in France with them on 11 August 1914. He went right through the war with the battalion, never missing a battle, winning the D.C.M. and M.M. Here is a typical soldier of the pre-1914 regular army, and this book is a delight, written in his own unpolished manner. Fighting, scrounging, gambling, drinking, dodging fatigues, stolidly enduring bombardment and the hardships of trench warfare, always getting his job done. This is one of the finest of all published memoirs of the Great War, truly a classic of its kind. A tribute to the army that died on the Western Front.
Book Synopsis Medals of the British Navy and how they were won by : WH Long
Download or read book Medals of the British Navy and how they were won written by WH Long and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain will always be grateful to her Navy for making her an empire, “on which the sun would never set”. It was the British Navy, which time and again, had been solely responsible for routing the forces of the various kingdoms in the world. And it was these acts of heroism by the valiant members of the nautical forces of the British Empire, which deserve more than perhaps just a mere mention. These acts have gone on to win various prestigious medals and other decorative honours. In this book, the author WH Long collates these stories of heroism from the various books and journals, which have long gone out of print. While the stories behind these medals may have been erased from records, they will forever be entrenched in the minds of a grateful British folk. These medals do not merely record an event, but they have a story to tell – a story of valour, courage, determination and patriotism. A must have book for a military enthusiast.

Book Synopsis Collecting Military Medals by : Colin Narbeth
Download or read book Collecting Military Medals written by Colin Narbeth and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The background to collecting military medals is inseparable from a study of history. The earliest British medals, as befits a nation for so long reliant upon naval strength for its independence, were issued to the Navy, beginning with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. The first true campaign medals awarded to the Army followed the Battle of Waterloo, although many had been issued privately and unofficially before this. As one would expect for a country like Britain, with an outstanding imperial history dating to modern times, a vast field of military medals covering service in Africa, India, and China awaits the attention of the collector. There are, too, the collections relating to major wars, including the Crimean War, Boer War and the two World Wars. Colin Narbeth describes the medals awarded, and the actions which gave rise to special bars, ribbons and stars. Orders and decorations, including the Victoria Cross and the George Cross, both awarded for extreme valor, are described as are the naming of medals and display. As well as this wealth of background information, the author also details the aims to which a new collector should aspire, and discusses the pitfalls to guard against, including the problem of identification of forgeries. The volume is illustrated with numerous photographs selected by the author.
