Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Inventions and How They Were Invented This is the fourth volume of the "Science for Children" Library, each volume of which is complete in itself. It goes without saying that the subject of War Inventions was suggested by the Great European War. During these years of warfare even children became interested in the instruments of destruction used in that barbarous thing which we call War. We must destroy our enemy, or he will destroy us. The great American historian - Washington Irving - said, a hundred and fifty years ago: "The natural principle of war is to do the most harm to our enemy with the least harm to ourselves." Children are always interested to hear how things came about, and so the author has endeavoured to show how the weapons of war came to be invented. By having imaginary talks with soldiers of long ago, we are impressed with the very great difference between the guns of to-day and those used in the battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar. Book excerpt: The first instruments and machines of 'modern' war For as long as people have formed themselves into factions there has been warfare. The nature of conflict changed little in its fundamentals until the industrial revolution. It is a sad but inevitable consequence of the age of industry and mass production that it introduced not only the benefits of manufactured goods and improved transportation, but the development of new and ever more efficient methods by which man could destroy his fellow man. It was during the American Civil War, with the introduction of the Minie ball and the emergence of the submarine and the ironclad warship that the science and technology of waging war took its first steps in a race which would result-just half a century later-in a transformation in the kinds and numbers of instruments of destruction employed on the field of battle, on and under the oceans and-for the first time-in the skies. The author of this book examines weapons of war employed in the first globally significant conflict of the 20th century-the First World War. Here the reader will not just read about mines, shells, bombs, guns, torpedoes, submarines and aircraft of the period, but also gain an understanding as to how they were constructed, their constituent parts, how they worked and their capabilities in battle. This book is an invaluable addition to the libraries of students of the Great War and will interest all those fascinated by the development of modern weaponry. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.

Book excerpt: The great World War was more than two-thirds over when America entered the struggle, and yet in a sense this country was in the war from its very beginning. Three great inventions controlled the character of the fighting and made it different from any other the world has ever seen. These three inventions were American. The submarine was our invention; it carried the war into the sea. The airplane was an American invention; it carried the war into the sky. We invented the machine-gun; it drove the war into the ground. It is not my purpose to boast of American genius but, rather, to show that we entered the war with heavy responsibilities. The inven-tions we had given to the world had been developed marvelously in other lands. Furthermore they were in the hands of a determined and unscrupulous foe, and we found before us the task of overcoming the very machines that we had created. Yankee ingenuity was faced with a real test. The only way of overcoming the airplane was to build more and better machines than the enemy possessed. This we tried to do, but first we had to be taught by our allies the latest refinements of this machine, and the war was over before we had more than started our aërial program. The machine-gun and its accessory, barbed wire (also an American invention), were overcome by the tank; and we may find what little comfort we can in the fact that its invention was inspired by the sight of an American farm tractor. But the tank was a British creation and was undoubtedly the most important invention of the war. On the sea we were faced with a most baffling problem. The U-boat could not be coped with by the building of swarms of submarines. The essential here was a means of locating the enemy and destroying him even while he lurked under the surface. Two American inventions, the hydrophone and the depth bomb, made the lot of the U-boat decidedly unenviable and they hastened if they did not actually end German frightfulness on the sea. But these were by no means the only inventions of the war. Great Britain showed wonderful ingenuity and resourcefulness in many di-rections; France did marvels with the airplane and showed great clev-erness in her development of the tank and there was a host of minor inventions to her credit; while Italy showed marked skill in the crea-tion of large airplanes and small seacraft.

Book excerpt: The Civil War was the first "modern war." Because of the rapid changes in American society, Abraham Lincoln became president of a divided United States during a period of technological and social revolution. Among the many modern marvels that gave the North an advantage was the telegraph, which Lincoln used to stay connected to the forces in the field in almost real time. No leader in history had ever possessed such a powerful tool to gain control over a fractious situation. An eager student of technology, Lincoln (the only president to hold a patent) had to learn to use the power of electronic messages. Without precedent to guide him, Lincoln began by reading the telegraph traffic among his generals. Then he used the telegraph to supplement his preferred form of communication—meetings and letters. He did not replace those face-to-face interactions. Through this experience, Lincoln crafted the best way to guide, reprimand, praise, reward, and encourage his commanders in the field. Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails tells a big story within a small compass. By paying close attention to Lincoln's "lightning messages," we see a great leader adapt to a new medium. No reader of this work of history will be able to miss the contemporary parallels. Watching Lincoln carefully word his messages—and follow up on those words with the right actions—offers a striking example for those who spend their days tapping out notes on computers and BlackBerrys. An elegant work of history, Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails is an instructive example of timeless leadership lessons.

Book excerpt: The Vietnam War was a conflict that divided many people and brought changes to America. It spanned from the 1950s to the 1970s and saw many new and improved technologies develop—among them napalm, attack helicopters, and TV journalism. These technologies ultimately changed the way people viewed warfare. This is the story of how the war started, what its impact was, and how these technologies changed the face of a nation.
