Book excerpt: Hundreds of years after civilisation has been destroyed by nuclear war, the Earth is divided between the Trackers of the Amtrak Federation – a community living in vast subterranean cities – and the Mutes, who have evolved to withstand the radiation that has driven their foes underground. A long war for possession of the overground has killed and enslaved many of the Mutes, leaving only the Plainfolk to resist the Federation. The Mutes' physical strength and tribal way of life is no match for the advanced weaponry that is used against them. Mr Snow, supernaturally gifted wordsmith of the Mute clan M'Call, is the Plainfolk's last hope in withstanding the onslaught of the 'sand-burrower's' attacks. Seventeen-year-old rookie wingman Steve Brickman is just about to graduate from Flight Academy. Safe in the knowledge of his own brilliance, his future seems assured. As a member of the Tracker society, Brickman has grown up deep underground, protected from the radiation of the blue-sky world above. The lure of this open space fills him with both fear and excitement, as he anticipates piloting his first mission against the sub-human Mutes. But all does not go as smoothly as planned, as the clan M'Call kidnaps Steve and puts him under the strange tutelage of the mysterious Mr Snow. Captivated by the beautiful Clearwater and befriended by the stoic Cadillac, Brickman soon discovers that there is more to the Mutes than his masters would have him believe. Eyes now open to the Mute's humanity, Brickman is torn by a painful divided loyalty. And now, it seems, he has become embroiled in an ancient Mute prophecy; that of the Talisman, the one who will save them all. Cloud Warrior, first published in 1983, is the first instalment of Patrick Tilley's internationally best selling science fiction epic, The Amtrak Wars Saga.

Book excerpt: We reprint the original version of the book “The teachings of Red Cloud”, published in 1934 including some of the first conferences held by Red Cloud between 1930 and 1932 that have never been printed before. In 2015 we found the teachings of the guide spirit of Estelle Roberts collected in the famous book “Red Cloud Speaks – My mission” that includes part of the communications occurred from 1935 to 1938. In 2016, with our great pleasure, we bring to light one more piece of the teachings that Red Cloud has communicated through its medium Estelle Roberts for 50 years. Traces of all these teachings had been missing for a long time. Right because of the lack of historical information, we deem it appropriate to publish these rare documents just as we found them. These pages give the opportunity to broaden your knowledge of Red Cloud, the guide spirit who had announced to Maurice Barbanell the cooperation with Silver Birch. Red Cloud, like Silver Birch, pursued the mission of helping humanity to re-think, re-discover the idea of God in the full freedom of free will, trying to break the chains of dogmas or creeds. Yes, it is necessary to keep on spreading the teachings of Spiritualism, even in Italy. Throughout the centuries Spiritualism has always been hindered, yet, with diffrent definitions from the one we use today, it is the oldest movement known in the world; it is always the same force of the Spirit that is in operation. The philosophy of teachings like the ones you will find in this book, reveals a true knowledge of the concept of God, one that does not need intermediaries like churches or theology. It reveals the bond of mediumship with God; it brings back to us the instruments we need to reason on religiosity. The demonstration mediumship gives us that life is eternal, that the spirit and the soul are immortal, has the purpose of bringing us back to the authentic knowledge of God, as Jesus already did. But Jesus Christ’s teaching has been lost, in many of its aspects, by churches and by theology themselves. The teachings of Spiritualism lead us to understand why each form of mediumship is a sacred gift at God’s service, always, whose purpose is not only to prove us that life is eternal, but also to make us aware that everything is in communion with God; we are all part of the infinite Spirit of God.

Book excerpt: John Thomas MacKenzie would much prefer to spend his remaining years just "tending his garden" at his estate in Spanish Florida, surrounded by his two tall sons and his lovely daughter Rebecca (whom all but her father call Becky). Unfortunately, the Empire of Great Britain and the young United States intrude on his plans. The English hope to cause an Indian uprising and seize the Spanish colony as a base for an invasion of their 13 lost American colonies. Against his will, MacKenzie is drawn into the turmoil by an American naval lieutenant and his crew who have been secretly sent by their government to try to thwart the British scheme. As if that weren't trouble enough, they encounter in the process an old enemy of MacKenzie's, a former pirate known as Dread Jamie Tyrone. When Tyrone sees Becky it's love at first sight -- on Tyrone's part. He kidnaps the young woman and plans to spirit her away to Ireland where she will be forced to become his wife. A chase ensues by both land and sea as MacKenzie and a companion seek to rescue his daughter while the Americans hurry to warn the Spaniards of the danger from the British. A resolution finally occurs at sword point in the vast untamed wilderness of Spanish West Florida.

It's 1936. While Europe is starting to feel the shadow of the upcoming turmoil, George Macintosh is determined to keep control of his business empire. He takes extreme measures to prevent his nephew David from taking a seat on the Board. Meanwhile, George's son Donald is packed off to the family station Glen View in Northern Queensland in an effort to curb his excesses. In Iraq, Captain Matthew Duffy doesn't escape the stain of growing fanaticism. Recruited by British Intelligence, he once more faces a German enemy, although this one has a more pleasing aspect. Matthew is confused by his attraction to Diane and finds himself having to make a hard decision. And just as he is coming to terms with his choice, he meets his estranged son, James Barrington Jnr. In the middle of all this upheaval, the two families experience loss, love, greatness and tragedy, and find themselves brought closer together and pulled further apart. Romance blooms in the unlikeliest of hearts under the gathering clouds of war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A controversial character largely known (as depicted in the movie Glory) as a Union colonel who led Black soldiers in the Civil War, James Montgomery (1814–71) waged a far more personal and radical war against slavery than popular history suggests. It is the true story of this militant abolitionist that Todd Mildfelt and David D. Schafer tell in Abolitionist of the Most Dangerous Kind, summoning a life fiercely lived in struggle against the expansion of slavery into the West and during the Civil War. This book follows a harrowing path through the turbulent world of the 1850s and 1860s as Montgomery, with the fervor of an Old Testament prophet, inflicts destructive retribution on Southern slaveholders wherever he finds them, crossing paths with notable abolitionists John Brown and Harriet Tubman along the way. During the tumultuous years of “Bleeding Kansas,” he became a guerilla chieftain of the antislavery vigilantes known as Jayhawkers. When the war broke out in 1861, Montgomery led a regiment of white troops who helped hundreds of enslaved people in Missouri reach freedom in Kansas. Drawing on regimental records in the National Archives, the authors provide new insights into the experiences of African American men who served in Montgomery’s next regiment, the Thirty-Fourth United States Colored Troops (formerly Second South Carolina Infantry). Montgomery helped enslaved men and women escape via one of the least-explored underground railways in the nation, from Arkansas and Missouri through Kansas and Nebraska. With support of abolitionists in Massachusetts, he spearheaded resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act in Kansas. And, when war came, he led Black soldiers in striking at the very heart of the Confederacy. His full story thus illuminates the actions of both militant abolitionists and the enslaved people fighting to destroy the peculiar institution.

Book excerpt: The history and causes of America's entry into World War I. Edward Grey could have prevented war if he had done either of two things. If he had acceded to the urging of France and Russia and given a strong warning to Germany that, in a European War, England would take the side of the Franco-Russian Alliance. If he had listened to German urging, and warned France and Russia that if they became involved in war, England would remain neutral.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micheline Ishay recounts the dramatic struggle for human rights across the ages in a book that brilliantly synthesizes historical and intellectual developments from the Mesopotamian Codes of Hammurabi to today's era of globalization. As she chronicles the clash of social movements, ideas, and armies that have played a part in this struggle, Ishay illustrates how the history of human rights has evolved from one era to the next through texts, cultural traditions, and creative expression. Writing with verve and extraordinary range, she develops a framework for understanding contemporary issues from the debate over globalization to the intervention in Kosovo to the climate for human rights after September 11, 2001. The only comprehensive history of human rights available, the book will be essential reading for anyone concerned with humankind's quest for justice and dignity. Ishay structures her chapters around six core questions that have shaped human rights debate and scholarship: What are the origins of human rights? Why did the European vision of human rights triumph over those of other civilizations? Has socialism made a lasting contribution to the legacy of human rights? Are human rights universal or culturally bound? Must human rights be sacrificed to the demands of national security? Is globalization eroding or advancing human rights? As she explores these questions, Ishay also incorporates notable documents—writings, speeches, and political statements—from activists, writers, and thinkers throughout history.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents, Volume 2: Pathogens, Mid-Spectrum, and Incapacitating Agents, Third Edition provides rapid access to key data to response professionals and decision-makers on a broad range of agents and pathogens. This volume presents information on a wide range of chemical and biological agents. Chemical agents detailed in this volume are those that were developed specifically for their non-lethal potential. The biological agents described are militarily significant pathogens that could be weaponized to pose a threat to people, animals, or crops and other agricultural interests. Mid-spectrum agents, materials that do not fit clearly into either the Chemical or the Biological Weapons Conventions, include toxins and bioregulators. Entomological agents, the final class of agents discussed in volume, are arthropods that could pose a significant threat to a country’s agriculture infrastructure and be used to devastate its economy. They were proposed for inclusion in the Biological Weapons Convention but never adopted. In addition to a discussion of each of these classes of agents, coverage includes detailed information on a broad spectrum of individual agents that have been used on the battlefield, stockpiled as weapons, used or threatened to be used by terrorists, or have been otherwise assessed by qualified law enforcement and response organizations and determined to be agents of significant concern. The information presented in this edition has been updated and expanded to contain more information on toxicology, health effects, presentation of diseases, advances in medical care and treatment, as well as protective actions needed at the scene of an incident. Key Features: Focuses on the key information needed during an emergency response Provides updated toxicology, exposure hazards, physical-chemical data, and treatment of casualties Profiles the presentation of diseases in people, animals and plants Presents updated protective action distances, decontamination, and remediation information All data compiled is gathered from numerous sources and arranged into the current, easy-to-access format. Book excerpt: "The sketches in this book and in my previous one, "The Cross at the Front," are attempts to show the soul of the soldier serving in France as I have seen it during the year and a half that I have been with him. It is a padre's privilege and duty to be the voice with which, in public worship, the soldiers speak to God; and through which their last thoughts are borne to their friends at home. He is their voice both when they are sick or wounded, and when they lie silent in the grave. He speaks of their hopes and fears, hardships and heroisms, laughter and tears. As best he may he tries to tell, to those who have a right and a longing to know, how they thought, and how they bore themselves in the great day of trial when all risked their lives and many laid them down." -Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books have continued their bestselling status centuries after their author's death. What is important is how such books are used. Because only extremely useful books continue in demand at bookstores, especially over generations. These books have found application as a training guides for many competitive endeavors that do not involve actual combat. This book is entitled A Samurai Master Class, as two additional classics, "The Book of Five Rings" and "Bushido, the Soul of Japan" have been included. No study of this period would be complete without understanding the strategies, tactics, and ethics of the Samurai. All of us have our journey to follow. For some, we could use this persona to make our decisions more wisely, to resolve conflicts as we move though life. In this, the Art of War can become the Way of Peace. This is presented as the old Japanese proverb told, "There are many paths up the mountain." In that spirit, this book is humbly presented for your use. (From the Forward)
