Book excerpt: Morgan Philips Price, the author of this valuable eye-witness account of the Great War and the early Russian Revolution as seen from the vast territories of the Caucasus in central Asia was a British left-wing journalist. A pacifist on the outbreak of war in 1914 he was recruited by the liberal 'Manchester Guardian' as a Russian-speaker to cover the war on the Eastern Front. The first part of the book describes Russian reverses and the chaotic state of the Tsar's war effort. Shocked by the chaos ( and unable to report if because of military censorship) Philips Price retreated to the Caucasus where he organised relief work for refugees. On the outbreak of the Russian revolution in 1917 he saw - with sympathy - the emergence of workers, soldiers and peasants' Soviets which he hoped would overturn what he called the 'medieval barbarism' of the Tsar and usher in a new era of peace and progress. He was not to know that he was seeing the birth of a new barbarism far worse than the old. Philips returned home, became a long-term Labour MP, and died in 1973.

Book excerpt: Even the best books on international history are ignorant of the secret war against the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union waged jointly by the Caucasian peoples and Japan in the first half of the twentieth century. This book explores and exposes previously unknown passages in Eurasian international history. Although the secret war ultimately failed in liberating the Caucasian peoples, the lessons of this Eurasian collaboration were not lost on the United States, which after World War II confronted the Soviet Union just as Japan had earlier. Washington copied the strategy of its former enemy and developed it further. The Eurasian triangle of Russia, the Caucasus, and Japan is a forgotten history of cardinal importance that, stretching from the Russo-Japanese War to World War II, influenced Western Cold War strategies. This book is also the story of a friendship rare in international politics between two unlikely partners unspoiled by political vicissitudes.

Download or read book Solzhenitsyn written by Michael Scammell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1984, was the first full biography of Solzhenitsyn. Starting with his childhood, it covers every period of his life in considerable detail, showing how Solzhenitsyn’s development paralleled and mirrored the development of Soviet society: ambitious and idealistic in the twenties and thirties, preoccupied with the struggle for survival in the forties, hopeful in the fifties and sixties and disillusioned in the seventies. Solzhenitsyn’s life thus serves as a paradigm for the history of twentieth-century Communism and for the intelligentsia’s attitudes to Communism. At the same time, this book relates Solzhenitsyn’s life to his works, all of which contain a large element of autobiography.

Book Synopsis The Russian Revolution by : James Mavor
Download or read book The Russian Revolution written by James Mavor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolutionary movements of 1905-1907 formed the first stage of the Russian Revolution, followed by an interval of peace and economic prosperity, but the outbreak of WWI and social unrest led to further revolutionary action in 1917 resulting in the abdication and murder of Tsar Nicholas II and the creation of the Soviet Union. Originally published in 1928, this volume traces the course and the consequences of the Revolution with Mavor emphasising the economic aspect of the Revolution as the main cause of the upheaval, considering political and military affairs in so far as their relation to the course of economic development. This title will be of interest to students of history and economics.
